Book excerpt: Rattan furnishings evoke the glamour and laid back elegance of exotic beach houses as well as the informal beauty of plant filled garden rooms and sun dappled verandas. Long fascinated with rattan's versatility, designer Lulu Lytle examines the enduring appeal of this sustainable tropical palm in RATTAN: A WORLD OF ELEGANCE AND CHARM. The first book in decades to examine the history and craftsmanship of rattan furniture, this insightful tome showcases rattan's appeal through archival images of beautiful interiors including Madeleine Castaing's winter garden in Paris, Michael Taylor's own Californian beach house, the Titanic's Café Parisian and the Billy Baldwin designed Mr. Kennedy's beauty salon in New York City. Rattan's many personalities are explored through its inclusion in settings as diverse as Impressionist paintings, flamboyant nightclubs and pared down contemporary drawing rooms. A reflection of its inherent beauty and longevity, antique rattan furniture from the nineteenth century is highly collectible, as are rattan pieces created by giants of modern design such as Josef Hoffmann for Thonet, Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn, Jean-Michel Frank for Ecart, Renzo Mongiardino for Bonacina, Arne Jacobsen for Sika, Paul Frankl and Donald Deskey. Rattan pieces have become iconic and highly prized, including Hiroomi Tahara's Wrap Sofa, Franca Helg's Primavera Chair, and the many iterations of the beloved Peacock Chair. RATTAN also highlights some of the many tastemakers who have embraced rattan--from Marella Agnelli, Babe Paley, and Cecil Beaton to leading interior designers including Jeffrey Bilhuber, Veere Grenney, Axel Vervoordt, and Jacques Grange.

Book American Wicker

Download or read book American Wicker written by Jeremy Elwell Adamson and published by Rizzoli International Publications. This book was released on 1993 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Plain or fancy, natural or painted, American wicker represents a significant and distinctive achievement in the international arena of the decorative arts. The fascinating history of American woven furnishings, from the mid-nineteenth century to the Great Depression, is offered in this volume, published on the occasion of an exhibition organized by the Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C." "Although basketweave furniture is "as old as history itself" and indigenous to many parts of the world, in the United States it blossomed into an astoundingly rich and meaningful art form. The story of American wicker is like the saga of America, for the design, manufacture, use, and symbolism of woven furniture directly reflect the nation's changing social, cultural, and aesthetic values during its most transformative era." "In 1620 the first Pilgrim born on North American shores was rocked aboard the Mayflower in a willow cradle, but the real birth and flowering of the American wicker industry occurred during the nineteenth century when the freewheeling entrepreneurial spirit of the times brought forth important technological innovations and set the scene for the intense commercial rivalry of two principal manufacturers - the Massachusetts-based Wakefield Rattan Company and Heywood Brothers and Company - who, singularly and in merger, dominated the industry well into the early decades of the twentieth century."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Archaeologists have found traces in digs, more than 7,000 years old in the Middle East, and anywhere where ancient civilizations settled. These vestiges of baskets showed that these people used baskets as the molds for clay cooking pots. That was because the imprint of the basket weave showed clearly on the clay. Plaited basket work has also been found in the Nile Delta some of which date back as early as 8000 BC. Many museums all over the world have a priceless collection of engine basket work usually shown along with ancient and early poetry and the common factor seems to be that baskets have always been made of any material available that is pliable, native, and the design and the type is going to be largely dependent on the availability of the material. The moment anybody talks about a basket you subconsciously associated with bringing home the shopping as these are nearly always used for carrying or holding things. In fact, I would not be surprised if you have one or 2 of these woven examples in your own house in the shape of lobster pots, especially if you are a looking fisherman, potato baskets to hold vegetables, especially if you are a farmer, decorative baskets for crediting a wine bottle, containers to hold flowers and fruit, containers for your table to hold bread rolls, wicker baskets, waste paper baskets, work baskets, lampshades, baby cribs, pet baskets, picnic campers, and houseplant holders… The uses of such baskets are global and infinite bound only by your creativity and imagination! This book is going to tell you all about how you can introduce yourself to this new satisfying craft, and start basket weaving when you have some leisurely time and energy over the weekend. You are definitely not going to be disappointed at the really attractive and soul satisfying final product and who knows, this may be a start of a beautiful new business!
