Book excerpt: This is confirmation advice for youth in the Evangelical Lutheran church. There are practical thoughts ("stay away from gambling, drinking and dance houses") and spiritual advice ("attend Sunday-school, be prayerful, follow God"). While planted firmly in the past (1890), Be True! is a useful document for contemporary readers as it reaffirms the sublimity of ceremony, the importance of tradition and recalls to everyone's mind the difficult but rewarding path to adulthood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the postmodern world we inhabit is highly fragmented, contested, and conflicted, we all have one thing in common: we are experiencing identity crises. Religious traditions are not immune to these crises, and orthodox Anglicans have been experiencing their own issues with identity since the 2003 consecration of an openly homosexual man. Orthodox Anglicans want to say who they are as both orthodox and Anglican, but they are also finding it difficult to articulate a clear and coherent identity, especially an Anglican one. This orthodox Anglican pursuit of a renewed sense of self in a complex and fragmented world is a microcosm of our postmodern context, and an examination of their quest holds enticing clues to our own urgent searches for meaning and identity. Think of this book as a kind of story: the story of a worldwide church who, when its identity was threatened, took counsel together to renew and revitalize its sense of self. In the process, it not only faced many dangers and difficulties but also learned much about who it was and who it wanted to be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of the church does not look bright in North America and Europe. This is documented by many recent surveys. The church is riddled with scandals, be it sexual abuse or financial misappropriation. This led to a loss of trust which is very difficult to regain. We also live in an aging society in which younger people have been brought up with a consumer attitude which does not stop at the church doors. Moreover, we live in a secular society in which individualism runs contrary to the communal aspect of the church. While religiosity has not vanished, the Christian faith is perceived by many as an "old time religion" whose tenets have lost their luster. Yet we should not give up on the church too quickly. The church has something to offer which the world needs and which it cannot secure by itself. This uniqueness of the church shows in the pronouncement of law and gospel and in the sacraments. The church is also instrumental for our self-understanding by serving as guardian of the past, as the heart of the present, and as a reminder of a meaningful future. In conclusion some directions are given toward a viable church.

Book American Lutheranism

Download or read book American Lutheranism written by Friedrich Bente and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "American Lutheranism" in 2 volumes is the record of how the Christian truth, restored by Luther, was preached and accepted, opposed and defended, corrupted and restored in the United States of America at various times, by various men, and in various synods and congregations. The authors main object was to record the principal facts regarding the doctrinal position occupied at various times, either by the different American Lutheran bodies themselves or by some of their representative men. The first volume deals with the early history of Lutheranism in America, while the second presents the history of the synods which in 1918 merged into the United Lutheran Church: the General Synod, the General Council, and the United Synod in the South.
