Everybody became a threat an enemy to the Veteran. Trying to sleep knowing that any noice would demand constance vigilence. Post Tramatic Stress Disorder or PTSD was not even heard about after 30 plus years of suffering and humilation disgraced disfuncitional families were created and nobody would pin point the cause of why Veterans were rapidly becoming victums. We were never accepted by our country for doing a job that was called by our own government. We have paid a heavy price trying to bring freedon to a country that cared less. In my book I tried to bring some answers to the fanilies of Veterans who were shut out and suffered at the hands of those who wanted to reach out but who would not yet begin to trust the people around them. Maybe from a Veteran who has gone through the same troubles at home and work and the fear of dying will bring some answers.

In this book, Diane McGuinness provides an innovative solution to the "reading war"—the century-old debate over the efficacy of phonics (sound-based) versus whole-word (meaning- based) methods. She has developed a prototype—a set of elements that are critical to the success of a reading method. McGuinness shows that all writing systems, without exception, are based on a sound unit in the language. This fact, and other findings by paleographers, provides a platform for the prototype. Other elements of the prototype are based on modern research. For example, observational studies in the classroom show that time spent on three activities strongly predicts reading success: learning phoneme/symbol correspondences, practice at blending and segmenting phonemes in words, and copying/writing words, phrases, and sentences. Most so-called literacy activities have no effect, and some, like sight word memorization, have a strongly negative effect. The National Reading Panel (2000) summarized the research on reading methods after screening out thousands of studies that failed to meet minimum scientific standards. In an in-depth analysis of this evidence, McGuinness shows that the most successful methods (children reading a year or more above age norms) include all the elements in the prototype. Finally, she argues, because phonics-type methods are consistently shown to be superior to whole-word methods in studies dating back to the 1960s, it makes no sense to continue this line of research. The most urgent question for future research is how to get the most effective phonics programs into the classroom.

You decide to schedule a meeting and when you sit down to talk with the teacher, they show you a reading evaluation that basically says, "My child can't read!" So now what? Don't worry. I am here to help! Let's talk about my passion for helping wrestling readers become successful readers. I am going to use the term "wrestling readers" because when watching the children who have difficulty with reading they wrestle with the words. It looks just like a real wrestling match. {In a wrestling match, one of the wrestlers tries to take control of the opponent by getting behind or on top of him for a "takedown." It is as if the words on the page are the opponent. When watching a child who is having difficulty reading, you can see and hear them trying to take down the words. They huff and puff trying to sound the words out. Hoping that the words they say will sound right, make sense, and help them know what they are reading. They move around in their seats, rock back and forth, or are unable to sit. They twirl their hair or wiggle their fingers. They crumple the pages of the book or paper, then flip their tablets or technology devices.} How do I know? I have taught students for over forty years from Kindergarten to Adults and have seen these behaviors firsthand. Reading is one of the most essential skills in our society. A child's ability to read and comprehend is a key to success in school and in life. It is literally a Daily Life Skill. Reading is a life skill for every occupation. From the brain surgeon to the truck driver, reading is essential. Let's look at a few examples: The cook needs to read the recipe and the orders to fill. The grocery worker needs to read the boxes to place the correct merchandise on the shelf in the correct area. The mom needs to read the medication to administer to her sick child. The athlete needs to read the playbook. The rapper needs to read the lyrics that he writes. For many children this task is simple; however, for an ever-increasing number of children, this is quite difficult. It's not just about looking at the pictures and guessing what's on the page. It's not about pronouncing a word softly so no one really hears what was said or skipping a word or even hoping what was said was correct. It's not even about listening to a recording and thinking you know what it is saying. It is really about the letters, and sounds, then putting them together; pronouncing the word, and knowing what it means(comprehension). It is really about the alphabet, their sounds, and connections. Reading starts with words in pictures such as McDonald's, Walmart, Target, Coke, Sprite, and Cheetos. Early readers are known to have a wider vocabulary earlier on in life than non-early readers. This is partly because they are more conscious of the words.

Why do some children learn to read easily and quickly while others, in the same classroom and taught by the same teacher, don't learn to read at all? In Language Development and Learning to Read, Diane McGuinness examines scientific research that might explain these disparities. She focuses on reading predictors, analyzing the effect individual differences in specific perceptual, linguistic, and cognitive skills may have on a child's ability to read. Because of the serious methodological problems she finds in the existing research on reading, many of the studies McGuinness cites come from other fields—developmental psychology, psycholinguistics, and the speech and hearing sciences—and provide a new perspective on which language functions matter most for reading and academic success. McGuinness first examines the phonological development theory—the theory that phonological awareness follows a developmental path from words to syllables to phonemes—which has dominated reading research for thirty years, and finds that research evidence from other disciplines does not support the theory. McGuinness then looks at longitudinal studies on the development of general language function, and finds a "tantalizing connection" between core language functions and reading success. Finally, she analyzes mainstream reading research, which links reading ability to specific language skills, and the often flawed methodology used in these studies.
