Book excerpt: Holiday time is magical in Sea Harbor, as the Seaside Knitters turn winter yarns of deep reds, greens, and golds into gifts. But when murder comes to this small New England town, they must set aside their needles to pursue justice—and restore joy to the season. In Sea Harbor the scent of snow fills the salty air, and at Izzy’s Seaside Yarn Studio, the Knitters feast on cookies, knit their gifts, and plan their holiday gatherings. Across town, Mary Pisano is sparing no expense to transform the estate she inherited from her grandfather into a bed-and-breakfast. When the Pisano family gathers for their annual meeting, Mary offers to put up her cousins in the refurbished family home, hoping to dispel any ill will over her inheriting the estate. But hard feelings are likely the cause when Mary’s cousin Pamela is found dead on the B and B’s snowy back porch. While the Seaside Knitters begin unraveling the case, Izzy Chambers is knitting her brow over her own mystery—the mystery of love. As the holiday draws nigh, the four friends will need all their crafty know-how to solve the crime and restore holiday peace—and the magic of mistletoe—to Sea Harbor.

Book excerpt: Most people don't have a nemesis, but I do. His name is Rafe Archibald. On the first day of kindergarten, he stole my chocolate cupcake. In sixth grade, he won the big essay contest, while I ended up runner-up. All through high school, he was my academic rival, and in college he dated all my friends. After graduation, I hoped to be rid of him at last, but he moved into the apartment across the hall. He's always around. Inescapable. Constantly infuriating me with his too-long hair, his laid-back attitude, and his smug smile. Just when I think it can't get worse, it does. Our grandmothers start meddling. They decide we must be secretly in love and concoct a matchmaking scheme. When my grandmother announces she's inviting all her friends and family to her huge country estate for an old-fashioned holiday house party, I'm excited about a two-week break from running into Rafe in the hallway, at the coffee shop, and at our favorite bar. Then there he is. At my grandmother's house for Christmas. In the room across the hall. Their set-up won't work. I've developed a lifetime's worth of resistance against Rafe's dubious charms. Sure, I might slip and fall into bed with him, but that's an accident and won't happen again. And, even if it does, it still won't touch my heart. After all, the last thing a smart woman should do is fall in love with her nemesis.

Book GoatMan

Download or read book GoatMan written by Thomas Thwaites and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dazzling success of The Toaster Project, including TV appearances and an international book tour, leaves Thomas Thwaites in a slump. His friends increasingly behave like adults, while Thwaites still lives at home, "stuck in a big, dark hole." Luckily, a research grant offers the perfect out: a chance to take a holiday from the complications of being human—by transforming himself into a goat. What ensues is a hilarious and surreal journey through engineering, design, and psychology, as Thwaites interviews neuroscientists, animal behaviorists, prosthetists, goat sanctuary workers, and goatherds. From this, he builds a goat exoskeleton—artificial legs, helmet, chest protector, raincoat from his mum, and a prosthetic goat stomach to digest grass (with help from a pressure cooker and campfire)—before setting off across the Alps on four legs with a herd of his fellow creatures. Will he make it? Do Thwaites and his readers discover what it truly means to be human? GoatMan tells all in Thwaites's inimitable style, which NPR extols as "a laugh-out- loud-funny but thoughtful guide through his own adventures."

Once he’s asleep, I sneak out of his apartment expecting to never see the drummer again. Except I left my guitar at his friend’s house. And my earring on his floor. An earring he uses to leverage me into a lunch date where he starts chipping away at the armor erected around my heart with his too-insightful mind and gorgeous green eyes. His touch heats up my body with a need I’ve never felt before. I won’t do a relationship ever again, but a surprise mutual connection brings us together for a week of sharing and sensual delights. Seven days of friends with benefits, then we go our separate ways. What happens in Virginia can stay in Virginia—right? Cry of a Lost Generation" to "Hey, Gang, It's Baywatch!" - Tsing Loh's brand of wry, self-deprecating wit is sure to win her new fans all across the country... and to cement her title as the Fran Lebowitz of the futon set."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book When Reason Goes on Holiday

Download or read book When Reason Goes on Holiday written by Neven Sesardic and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophers usually emphasize the importance of logic, clarity and reason. Therefore when they address political issues they will usually inject a dose of rationality in these discussions, right? Wrong. This book gives a lot of examples showing the unexpected level of political irrationality among leading contemporary philosophers. The body of the book presents a detailed analysis of extreme leftist views of a number of famous philosophers and their occasional descent into apology for—and occasionally even active participation in—totalitarian politics. Most of these episodes are either virtually unknown (even inside the philosophical community) or have received very little attention. The author tries to explain how it was possible that so many luminaries of twentieth-century philosophy, who invoked reason and exhibited rigor and careful thinking in their professional work, succumbed to irrationality and ended up supporting some of the most murderous political regimes and ideologies. The huge leftist bias in contemporary philosophy and its persistence over the years is certainly a factor but it is far from being the whole story. Interestingly, the indisputably high intelligence of these philosophers did not actually protect them from descending into political insanity. It is argued that, on the contrary, both their brilliance and the high esteem they enjoyed in the profession only made them more self-confident and less cautious, thereby eventually making them blind to their betrayal of reason and the monstrosity of the causes they defended.
