Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Determination of Moisture in Coke It therefore seems probable that the circulation of dried air is unnecessary; that larger temperature limits than 104° to 110° Cv are permissible; that no appreciable gain in weight due to absorption of oxygen takes place on heating longer than one hour; and, finally, that practically all the moisture should be removed on heating the un pulverized coke to constant weight. If the latter procedure is per missible, the ever-present danger of loss of moisture during pulveriza tion Will be eliminated and it Will be possible to determine the moisture content of a shipment of coke With the same ease and simplicity as for iron ores. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coal and Coke The preparation of this book was undertaken in part because of the requests for information made to the author by numerous friends engaged in the manufacture of coal gas, and in part with the desire of placing before the American student of coal gas production, data in a concise form covering the various systems of coal carbonization. Baltimore was the first city in America to undertake to supply illuminating gas as a commercial commodity. The residents of this city were invited in 1816 to visit Peale's Museum to see the new burning air, the name given to coal gas by the advertising agent of the museum. This exhibition took place just six months after the daily papers had announced that Covent Garden Thea tre in London, as well as several streets in the English capitol, were illuminated by the burning of coal gas. Unfortunately, coal gas manufacture received a serious set back through the advent of carburetted water-gas, and this con dition has continued, until now approximately 75 per cent. Of the gas manufactured is produced in the water-gas generator. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-10-08 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coal and Coke Mixtures as Water-Gas Generator Fuel The experiments conducted at Streator, in 1918, in operating a 6-foot set 6 to 7 hours a day did not solve some of the important questions in the use of coal fuel, namely, the effect of a stand-over period on capacity and possibilities in the use of the blow-run method of operating with mixed fuels, coal and coke. The chief purpose of this paper, therefore, is to present information bearing on these problems and the results obtained during six weeks of experiment at Davenport, Iowa, using mixed generator fuel with the blow-run method of operating. Data are included on the behavior of the various fuels used in the generator, the clinker conditions, the use of fuel high in ash, and on the use of coal high in sulphur.
