Book excerpt: Wholly Smokes was the last book completed by one of the most original, brilliant and under-rated American writers of the 20th century. Like so many of John Sladek's earlier books, this is almost impossible to categorize. It's the non-fiction or non-fact history of General Snuff and Tobacco, a very American tobacco company which seems to have been present at, or had bizarre influence on, many great and not-so-great moments of history. John Sladek provides his own indescribable clip-art illustrations. As he says in the Introduction: "The story of GST is also the story of the Badcock family, who owned and operated the company throughout its magnificent history. This book follows that history, stopping to explore a few of its more dazzling events. You will meet the Badcock who kidnapped Pocahontas, the Badcock who burned London, the Badcock who started the American Revolution, the Badcock who almost killed a president, the Badcock who delivered the real Gettysburg address, the Badcock who wanted to prolong World War One (because he was doing so well out of it), the Badcock who tried to bribe Roosevelt, the Badcock who tried to kill Fidel Castro, and many others . . ."

Book Drinking Smoke

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mac Marshall
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2013-08-31
  • ISBN : 0824836855
  • Pages : 314 pages

Download or read book Drinking Smoke written by Mac Marshall and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2013-08-31 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tobacco kills 5 million people every year and that number is expected to double by the year 2020. Despite its enormous toll on human health, tobacco has been largely neglected by anthropologists. Drinking Smoke combines an exhaustive search of historical materials on the introduction and spread of tobacco in the Pacific with extensive anthropological accounts of the ways Islanders have incorporated this substance into their lives. The author uses a relatively new concept called a syndemic—the synergistic interaction of two or more afflictions contributing to a greater burden of disease in a population—to focus at once on the health of a community, political and economic structures, and the wider physical and social environment and ultimately provide an in-depth analysis of smoking’s negative health impact in Oceania. In Drinking Smoke the idea of a syndemic is applied to the current health crisis in the Pacific, where the number of deaths from coronary heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease continues to rise, and the case is made that smoking tobacco in the form of industrially manufactured cigarettes is the keystone of the contemporary syndemic in Oceania. The author shows how tobacco consumption (particularly cigarette smoking after World War II) has become the central interstitial element of a syndemic that produces most of the morbidity and mortality Pacific Islanders suffer. This syndemic is made up of a bundle of diseases and conditions, a set of historical circumstances and events, and social and health inequities most easily summed up as “poverty.” He calls this the tobacco syndemic and argues that smoking is the crucial behavior—the “glue”—holding all of these diseases and conditions together. Drinking Smoke is the first book-length examination of the damaging tobacco syndemic in a specific world region. It is a must-read for scholars and students of anthropology, Pacific studies, history, and economic globalization, as well as for public health practitioners and those working in allied health fields. More broadly the book will appeal to anyone concerned with disease interaction, the social context of disease production, and the full health consequences of the global promotional efforts of Big Tobacco.

Download or read book Holiness as a Liberal Art written by Daniel Castelo and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-07-18 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holiness is a topic that is rarely discussed in Christian colleges and seminaries, yet the rationale for the existence of these institutions is that they provide environments where people can grow into the image of Christ. In other words, these places exist so that Christians can grow in holiness. The essays collected in this volume treat the theme of holiness from a variety of theological disciplines, all with the purpose of disabusing Christians from mischaracterizations of the theme as well as offering a vision for what the Christian life could look like. In both simple and profound ways, holiness is a liberal art; it is the Christian way and shape of life.

Book The Bride Of Christ The Bridegroom and His Bride

Download or read book The Bride Of Christ The Bridegroom and His Bride written by Christopher Hussey and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-08-11 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Right from the very beginning in eternity past, God had planned history with His Son having a bride, a companion that would co-reign with Him and enjoy Him forever. That is the eternal purpose of God in creating a bride for His Son. If you read the Scripture from cover to cover, you would discover that God teaches us in a variety of different ways. Sometimes God uses powerful word pictures, sometimes He uses symbols, sometimes He uses examples of people both good and bad. Sometimes God uses a direct word, an authoritative word, sometimes He uses examples from nature, like a tree planted by the rivers of water that will not cease to bear fruit. This book highlights how God gave us an example of an ancient Jewish wedding ceremony that correlates with Christ, the Bridegroom, and His bride the church. From the father choosing a bride for his son, paying the bridal price, the bridegroom snatching his bride and bringing her to the bridal chamber, and then finally co-reigning with him in their household with him as the head. It is absolutely amazing the correlation between the two. What was a mystery to the Jews has been revealed. The mystery was that both Jew and Gentile called the church would be the bride of Christ. The bride of Christ is describing the kind of relationship we can have with Jesus. God is seeking willing lovers, who would voluntarily seek His heart, voluntarily surrender to Him, and voluntarily love Him with all their heart, soul and mind, and strength.

Book My Life Above the Clouds

Download or read book My Life Above the Clouds written by Margaret Rose Scribner and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2015-05-10 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who hasn’t dreamed of escaping a humdrum existence, shredding unrelenting debts, thumbing a nose at ravenous utility behemoths, and fleeing to some remote mountain hideaway? Ben did! Pull up a chair, pour a pleasing beverage, and follow his journey as he strives to exist off the grid, on ten magnificent acres atop an Idaho mountain. In that isolated setting, as he labors to convert its tiny cabin into a self-sufficient abode, he began to imagine that he was evolving into a modern-day Henry David Thoreau. His story chronicles, with humor and wisdom, his first year with his struggles, trials, errors, lessons learned, blunders made, friends acquired, and curious encounters with neighborhood wildlife. It is informative, enlightening, funny, and inspirational. Military yarns, trucker’s tales, and anecdotes abound, and liberally laced with the wit and wisdom of Henry David.

Book Legend of the Mighty Sparrow Part 2

Download or read book Legend of the Mighty Sparrow Part 2 written by Bryan Fletcher and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-08-17 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This science fiction adventure represents the ultimate survivor genre, a hero against all odds, against powerful special interests too-big-to-fail, a system controlled by ultimate insiders who often seem hell-bent on obsession, the last war, escalation, and world economic domination, to create a brave new world, another dystopia. And the story focuses on a black site scientist with an urgent mission: to reach the next underground bunker with unparalleled destruction and equipment that smolders, a place with sections that have damage beyond description, beyond all known languages from some unknown experiment, as the experiment may have fractured time or seriously damaged a local aspect of the universe. As people often say the most important trait is location-location-location, a real estate term regarding a vital place or vulnerable point. And in this case, the concern is about a weapon of mass destruction, a favorite human pursue since prehistoric times, and this weapon is not a mother of all bombs, not MOAB or the insidious neutron bomb, but a new age experiment that directed a complex particle beam at a universal pressure point in space, universal defect in spacetime or support aspect, well, similar to the way someone brings down a high-rise building by damaging the main support beam, and in this case to collapse the universal wave function, as the universe may represent a bubble, a supreme algebraic bubble, a supreme bulkhead. And this secret military experiment, one without checks and balances, appears to have punctured the universe with a special warp bubble pierce, and might initiate deflation at faster than light speed, to deflate the universe, as space can move faster than light, which in this case will quickly collapse the universe, to bring about the End of Days, eschatology, the final events of history, and the ultimate human destiny.

Book Ethical Decision Quality

Download or read book Ethical Decision Quality written by Ali Abbas and published by Ethics International Press. This book was released on 2023-11-25 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizational decision-making and ethics have often been treated as different topics. This separation impacts both the ethical quality of decisions and the quality of ethical decisions. Decision analysis provides a wealth of tools that can help decision-makers achieve clarity of action and can capture uncertainty and preferences in decisions with ethical implications. Further, decision analysis provides many insights into decision traps that are relevant to decisions with (and without) ethical implications. Decision analysis also highlights situations where individuals become reluctant to change a course of action because of the sunk cost bias, even if a change is appropriate and even if it has ethical implications. Despite these (and many other) well-known human biases in decision-making, decision analysis has not been fully integrated into the teachings of ethics. On an organizational level, teaching ethics without a focus on decision analysis can render the teachings irrelevant to organizational decisions and can steer the focus towards deterministic reasoning that overlooks uncertainty and ignores a wealth of knowledge on traps, biases, and normative methods for making decisions. This book is written for anybody interested in learning about and researching ethical decision-making. It can be used in classroom discussions that combine ethics and organizational decision-making. It is also particularly relevant for MBA and Executive MBA programs.

Book The Radioactive Boy Scout

Download or read book The Radioactive Boy Scout written by Ken Silverstein and published by Random House. This book was released on 2004-03-02 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in suburban Detroit, David Hahn was fascinated by science, and his basement experiments—building homemade fireworks, brewing moonshine, and concocting his own self-tanning lotion—were more ambitious than those of other boys. While working on his Atomic Energy badge for the Boy Scouts, David’s obsessive attention turned to nuclear energy. Throwing caution to the wind, he plunged into a new project: building a nuclear breeder reactor in his backyard garden shed. In The Radioactive Boy Scout, veteran journalist Ken Silverstein recreates in brilliant detail the months of David’s improbable nuclear quest. Posing as a physics professor, David solicited information on reactor design from the U.S. government and from industry experts. (Ironically, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was his number one source of information.) Scavenging antiques stores and junkyards for old-fashioned smoke detectors and gas lanterns—both of which contain small amounts of radioactive material—and following blueprints he found in an outdated physics textbook, David cobbled together a crude device that threw off toxic levels of radiation. His unsanctioned and wholly unsupervised project finally sparked an environmental catastrophe that put his town’s forty thousand residents at risk and caused the EPA to shut down his lab and bury it at a radioactive dumpsite in Utah. An outrageous account of ambition and, ultimately, hubris that sits comfortably on the shelf next to such offbeat science books as Driving Mr. Albert and stories of grand capers like Catch Me If You Can, The Radioactive Boy Scout is a real-life adventure with the narrative energy of a first-rate thriller.

Book Detroit Lenacrave and Cleveland

Download or read book Detroit Lenacrave and Cleveland written by Brooke! and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was almost as hard headed as it gets while repeatedly insisting on missing and ignoring the entire point that Mom and a few others tried to get me to realize. "GET YOUR EDUCATION!!!" I still had some great times here and there every now and then, and I can only imagine how beautiful-my-life-would-have-been if I would have followed the "The Golden Rules." Some wonderful things have happened to me even though I still feel that I truly did not deserve or even know how to sincerely enjoy thoroughly, but on the other hand, some not so wonderful things have happened to me that I basically brought on myself as a direct result of not following "The Golden Rules." EDUCATION IS A MUST!!! I know my family was not the only family that has gone through a divorce, and I know there are millions of kids who went through divorce without a scratch. I am not blaming any of my failures as a man on the pitfalls of divorce, but I can clearly see now that my "character flaws" were a direct hit stemming from the casualties of my parents divorce. I did not ask to be me, and I certainly did not ask or expect to be stuck on stupid for almost three tenths of a century. It was what it was! If I would have known their divorce would eventually effect me which I believe set the wheels in motion that turned towards me turning out the way I have, I would have started Praying that night. But I had no idea it would, and neither did they. I can only imagine how beautiful my life would have been if their marriage was meant to be, but it was not about me. Brooke!
