Book excerpt: What would you do if you went to bed ugly, fat, and depressed and woke up the next morning in the body of a goddess? This is exactly the miracle that befalls Allison Penny, who has spent most of her twenty-two years on this earth in a serious slump (to say the least). Having long since given up on her life, Allison is stuck in an apartment with an evil sexpot roommate, trapped in a dysfunctional relationship with her alcoholic mother, and miserably working as a cleaning lady to pay the bills. Now, of course, Allison wastes no time in test-driving her new looks, and she experiences all of the power and fun that come with being gorgeous. Men and modeling agencies are falling all over her, and she finally has the confidence to live her life without trying to disappear into the background. But even for the beautiful people, things can get complicated, and soon Allison finds herself with a whole new set of problems. Darkly hilarious, engaging, and full of surprises, Waking Beauty is a modern-day fairy tale with an all-too-real moral: No matter how much we hate to admit it, it’s what’s on the outside that counts.

Book Human Sleep

  • Author : Wallace Mendelson
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461319218
  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book Human Sleep written by Wallace Mendelson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sleep plays an important role in the history of the neurosciences. On Easter Monday in 1920, Otto Loewi was awakened in the night by a dream in which he conceived of neurotransmitters communicating across the synapse. He quickly made notes, but in the morning he could not understand his scribbles. The following night, the dream came again. He wrote down his thoughts more carefully and, the next day, conducted the crucial experiment that launched modern neu rophysiology (Koelle, 1986). Since the beginning of the modern era of sleep research in the 1950s, we have used the principles of neurotransmission to explore the regulation of sleep. Without resorting excessively to comments on blind men and elephants, however, it is fair to say that the phenomena of sleep and waking can be approached from many perspectives. Among other things, sleep is a process that can be described electri cally, an experience that so far defies physiological measurements, and a social behavior. In this book, I have tried to describe the physiology and pharmacology of sleep (Part I) and to relate them to clinical sleep disorders (Part II). Having neither the skill nor the grandiosity of Rous seau, I have made no attempt to write an encyclopedia of all that is known on the subject. Rather, I think of this book as more of a snap shot, giving a picture of where we are, and it is hoped, a history of how we got here.

  • Publisher : The Charlotte Press
  • Release : 2009-10

  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book Cpl Cox written by Eric J. Cox and published by The Charlotte Press. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran CPL COX is not a hero. He?s an average American who joined the military during peacetime with the dream of honor and willingness to sacrifice in the service of his country. On February 7, 2003, he left loved ones behind, stepped into the darkness of the unknown and found himself in the midst of Operation Iraqi Freedom.#13; #13; This memoir, rewritten from the pages of his journal, delivers an informative, personal, thought-provoking and sometimes poignant look into his wartime experience. But even more remarkable is the insight it provides regarding the inner struggles CPL COX had to face as a member of the United States military -- the physical, emotional and psychological challenges faced similarly, yet in their own individual ways by American service men and women all over the world.#13; #13; WAR CHANGES LIVES? ?What was it like?? Eric J Cox does an excellent job of answering this question although what you may find most astonishing is that combat was only a prelude to the psychological battles he would face. With the fall of the Saddam Hussein regime, his unit?s wartime role was basically over, yet their hardest days were yet to come?#13;

Book North Carolina Civil War Obituaries Regiments 1 through 46

Download or read book North Carolina Civil War Obituaries Regiments 1 through 46 written by E.B. Munson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Carolina sent more than 125,000 men and boys to fight the Civil War. It is estimated that about 40,000 lost their lives on the battlefield or by disease. Most were sent home for burial in family plots or community churchyards but thousands could not be identified or could not be transported and were interred in unmarked graves across the country. Many never had an obituary published. Others had obituaries that included directions to the deceased's final resting place. This compilation of obituaries from North Carolina newspapers documents the date and cause of death for hundreds of soldiers, with many providing place of burial, surviving relatives, last words, accounts by comrades and details of military service.

Book The Cinema of Richard Linklater

Download or read book The Cinema of Richard Linklater written by Rob Stone and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Slacker (1991), a foundational work of independent American cinema, to the Before trilogy, Richard Linklater’s critically acclaimed films and aesthetic ambition have earned him a place as one of the most important contemporary directors. In this second edition of The Cinema of Richard Linklater, Rob Stone shows how Linklater’s latest films have redefined our understanding of his work. He offers critical discussions and analysis of all of Linklater’s films, including Before Midnight (2013) and Everybody Wants Some!! (2016), as well as new interviews with Linklater and a chapter on Boyhood (2014), hailed as one of the best films of the twenty-first century. Stone explores the theoretical, practical, contextual, and metaphysical elements in Linklater’s filmography, especially his experimentation with cinematic representations of time and growth. He demonstrates that fanciful lives and lucid dreams are as central as alternative notions of America and time to Linklater’s films. Stone also considers Linklater’s collaborative working practices, his deployment of such techniques as rotoscoping, and his innovative distribution strategies. Thoroughly revised, updated, and extended, the book includes analysis of all of Linklater’s films, including Dazed and Confused (1993), Waking Life (2011), and A Scanner Darkly (2006) as well as his documentaries, short films, and side projects.
