Excerpt: ... number, were permanently excluded, on the ground of fraud in their election; and that old city has sent a full Democratic ticket in their stead--good men and true, --and some of her ablest and longest tried citizens. On one ground and another, the seats of certain senators were vacated, and these were promptly filled by Democrats--the Radicals, as in Charleston, making no nominations. At last, the sudden disappearance of the notorious Whittemore, from that body, gave the Democrats the majority there also. Whittemore's seat was declared vacant, and a Democrat has been elected in his place also. The most important action of this session of the Legislature, was the appointment of two able committees to sit during the recess. The first committee is to investigate the financial condition of the State, particularly her bonded debts. The second is to inquire into and bring to trial, all frauds, high crimes and misdemeanors perpetrated against the State, . under Radical rule. It was this last measure that frightened Whittemore off, and has caused many others to depart abruptly. But it is no part of the committee's duties or purpose to drive the Radicals from the State. So far from it, they are sending to the highways and hedges, and compelling them to come in. Their proceedings, of course, are private; but, from their success, thus far, and from the character of the tribunal, there is no doubt that their work will be thoroughly done. See Appendix. Our narrative now closes in the midst of this most stupendous revolution, and one brought about by means, apparently, so inadequate. Book excerpt: The biographical essays in this volume provide new insights into the various ways that South Carolina women asserted themselves in their state and illuminate the tension between tradition and change that defined the South from the Civil War through the Progressive Era. As old rules—including gender conventions that severely constrained southern women—were dramatically bent if not broken, these women carved out new roles for themselves and others. The volume begins with a profile of Laura Towne and Ellen Murray, who founded the Penn School on St. Helena Island for former slaves. Subsequent essays look at such women as the five Rollin sisters, members of a prominent black family who became passionate advocates for women’s rights during Reconstruction; writer Josephine Pinckney, who helped preserve African American spirituals and explored conflicts between the New and Old South in her essays and novels; and Dr. Matilda Evans, the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine in the state. Intractable racial attitudes often caused women to follow separate but parallel paths, as with Louisa B. Poppenheim and Marion B. Wilkinson. Poppenheim, who was white, and Wilkinson, who was black, were both driving forces in the women’s club movement. Both saw clubs as a way not only to help women and children but also to showcase these positive changes to the wider nation. Yet the two women worked separately, as did the white and black state federations of women’s clubs. Often mixing deference with daring, these women helped shape their society through such avenues as education, religion, politics, community organizing, history, the arts, science, and medicine. Women in the mid- and late twentieth century would build on their accomplishments.

Book excerpt: Oral histories of formerly enlaved people and their families along the South Carolina coast Coming Through marks the first complete publication of these interviews with former slaves and their descendants living in the Waccamaw Neck region of South Carolina as collected by Genevieve W. Chandler as part of the WPA Federal Writers Project. Between 1936 and 1938 Chandler interviewed more than one hundred individuals in and around All Saints Parish, a portion of Horry and Georgetown counties located between the Waccamaw River and the Atlantic Ocean. Her subjects spoke freely with her on topics ranging from slave punishment to folk medicine, from conditions in the Jim Crow South to the exploits of Brer Rabbit. A teacher, artist, writer, and later museum curator, Chandler had no formal training as an oral historian or folklorist, yet the sophistication of her work as documented here anticipates developments in these fields of study a generation later. Her detailed descriptions add social context to folktales, and her careful and systematic renderings of the Gullah language have since been praised as foundational work by Creole linguists. Chandler's Gullah-speaking African American informants range in age from the 9-year-old George Kato Singleton to 104-year-old Welcome Bees. A biography of each subject accompanies the interviews. Collectively these interviews form an intimate portrait of a fascinating subculture of the Carolina coast and the Sea Islands as shared with a remarkable woman who has special access to converse with the people of this traditionally insular world. Moreover they provide an unparalleled firsthand account of the African American experience in South Carolina in the words of those who lived it. The volume is edited by Chandler's daughter, Genevieve C. Peterkin, and two scholars, Kincaid Mills and Aaron McCollough. In 1988, she was sworn in as the first female justice on the Supreme Court of South Carolina, and twelve years later she was elected Chief Justice, becoming the first woman ever to hold the highest position in the state’s judiciary. As Chief Justice, Toal modernized not only her court, but also the state’s judicial system. As a child, she loved roller skating in the lobby of the post office—a historic building that now serves as the Supreme Court of South Carolina.
