Book Eddie Shore and that Old Time Hockey

Download or read book Eddie Shore and that Old Time Hockey written by C. Michael Hiam and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eddie Shore was the Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb of hockey, a brilliant player with an unmatched temper. Emerging from the Canadian prairie to become a member of the Boston Bruins in 1926, the man from Saskatchewan invaded every circuit in the NHL like a runaway locomotive on a downgrade. Hostile fans turned out in droves with a wish to see him killed, but in Boston he could do no wrong. During his twenty-year professional career, the controversial Shore personified "that old time hockey" like no other, playing the game with complete disregard for his own safety. Shore was one of the most penalized men in the NHL, and also a perennial member of its All Star Team. A dedicated athlete, Shore won the Hart Trophy for the league’s most valuable player four times — a record for a defenseman not since matched — and led Boston to two Stanley Cups in 1929 and 1939. In 1933, Shore was the instigator of hockey’s most infamous event, the tragic "Ace Bailey Incident," and during his subsequent sixteen-game suspension the fans chanted, "We want Shore!" After retiring from the NHL in 1940, Shore’s passion for the game remained undiminished, and as owner and tyrant of the AHL Springfield Indians, he won championship after championship. This is an action-packed and full-throated celebration of the "mighty Eddie Shore" — and also of the sport of hockey as it was gloriously played in a bygone age.

Book Herb Brooks

Download or read book Herb Brooks written by John Gilbert and published by Mvp Books. This book was released on 2010-09-27 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U. S. hockey team’s victory at the 1980 Olympics was a “Miracle on Ice”--a miracle largely brought about by Herb Brooks, the legendary coach who forged that invincible team. Famously antagonistic toward the press at Lake Placid, Brooks nonetheless turned to sportswriter John Gilbert after each game, giving his longtime friend and confidant what became the most comprehensive coverage of the ’80 team. This book is Gilbert’s memoir of Brooks. Neither strictly biography or tell-all exposé, Herb Brooks: The Inside Story of a Hockey Mastermind is the story of an extraordinary man as it emerged in the course of a remarkable friendship.

Book excerpt: The Western Division of the Montreal General Hospital was so close to the Forum that Montréal Canadiens players could put on skate guards and walk to the hospital’s emergency room. This was not a coincidence and established proximity as a priority. Dr. Douglas Kinnear supported twelve Stanley Cup winning Montréal Canadiens squads as team physician. Dr. David Mulder has been on the medical staff for over fifty years and for eight Stanley Cups. In Hockey Doc, these two legendary team physicians explore the dynamic doctor player relationship they came to know so well with a look at more than fifty years of medical care provided to the hockey club. Hockey Doc examines how the medical program for the Montréal Canadiens has evolved over its history due to its long-standing relationship with the MGH and the Molson family. The doctors breakdown major injuries with real-life examples that every team physician needs to be aware of and share career highlights. Featuring stories about Saku Koivu, Trent McCleary, Patrick Roy, Maurice Richard, Gump Worsley, Bobby Orr, Lou Lamoriello, and journalist Red Fisher – among countless others – Hockey Doc shares the inside jokes between doctor and player while providing a greater commentary on the evolution of sports medicine throughout two MGH doctors’ careers. For hockey fans of all ages and the Québec medical community, Hockey Doc shares the relationship between the injured professional athlete and the medical staff of a university medical centre and provides an inside look at the injuries and illnesses these doctors have faced over their storied careers.

Historical Dictionary of Ice Hockey traces the history and evolution of hockey in general, as well as individual topics, from their beginnings to the present, through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary has more than 600 cross-referenced entries on the players, general managers, managers, coaches, and referees, as well as entries for teams, leagues, rules, and statistical categories. Book The Hockey Hotties Collection

Download or read book The Hockey Hotties Collection written by Jennifer Sucevic and published by Jennifer Sucevic. This book was released on 2022-10-27 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Sucevic comes a steamy, enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, new adult sports romance collection that is laugh out loud funny featuring three strong heroines and the cocky hockey players who fall first and hard for them. Hate to Love You Brody McKinnon is Whitmore University's star defenseman destined for NHL greatness. He made a name for himself playing juniors before gracing us with his esteemed presence. As much as it pains me to admit it, he’s exploded at the college level. While other girls fall all over themselves trying to gain his attention, I do my best to steer clear just as I would a particularly nasty case of crabs. For reasons I can't fathom, Brody takes great pleasure in messing with me. And I, in return, enjoy slicing him to ribbons with my razor-sharp tongue. You'd think after three years, he'd learn to keep his distance. No such luck. Unfortunately for me, I’m about to experience the worst week of my life. It starts with my ex announcing at a party that I’m a lousy lay. He’s the hockey-playing jerk I dated last year who left a bad taste in my mouth (*eyeroll* seriously…get your mind out of the gutter). Want to guess who rides in on his trusty white steed to rescue me? Or should I say, opens his big mouth? Yup, you guessed it. Brody freaking McKinnon, the guy I love to hate. He only makes matters worse by telling everyone that we’re together and then punching Reed in the face. The first…I plan on strangling him for. The second…I’m only sorry I didn’t get to Reed first. Now I’m stuck fake-dating Brody, the one guy who makes me feel like a rabid dog on a choke chain, for the foreseeable future. I guarantee we won’t last more than seventy-two hours without me killing him. Just Friends Emerson and I met freshman year of high school and we’ve been tight ever since. I’ve been pretty good about keeping her locked in the- girls I don’t think about having sex with part of my brain. Which is no easy feat because, let’s face it, unless we’re related, you’re potential spank bank material. Luckily for me, Southern University has an overabundance of Red Devils hockey groupies, which means there are always plenty of puck bunnies for me to choose from. I’m just careful to make sure they look nothing like Em. So, it should be all good in the hood, right? Wrong. I’m embarrassed to admit this, but lately, I can’t seem to get it up. Unless an image of Em pops into my head. Then it’s all systems go. It’s a messed-up situation. One Emerson is blissfully unaware of. And that’s exactly the way it needs to stay. What I’ve learned is that friendship is a hell of a lot harder to come by than hookups. Ready for a complication? It turns out that Em is a virgin. And she wants me to be the one to, well…take care of business. You better believe I shot down the idea before it could gain traction in my brain. Maybe Em doesn’t realize it, but remaining friends after you’ve slept with someone happens about as often as spotting a tie-dye-colored unicorn that craps sprinkles. If it weren’t rare, everyone would be doing it, right? Exactly. As far as I’m concerned, Emerson has remained a virgin for this long, she can damn well wait to do the deed until after we part ways next year. Unfortunately, my best friend has other ideas. Which pretty much means I’m screwed. And not in a good way. The Breakup Plan Grayson McNichols can have his pick of girls on this campus. Just ask him and he’ll tell you that the females of Hillsdale University have a real penchant for sexy, hockey playing hotties. Hell, all he has to do is flash a smile in their direction and they fall right onto their backs and spread their legs. Would I happen to be one of them? Umm…I’m going to plead the fifth on that one. All right, fine. You caught me. I made the mistake of knocking boots with Gray freshman year. What can I say? I’m a sucker for gorgeous guys with inky black hair, bright blue eyes, and dimples. And don’t even get me started on his chiseled chest and abs of steel… After we hooked up, I never heard from Gray again. Not that I expected too. Okay, that’s a lie. Maybe for one brief, delusional moment, I thought I might be different. You know, the girl who changes the hockey playing bad boy for the better (cue the laughter). But he swiftly disabused me of that notion by moving on to fresh meat in the blink of an eye. Which is precisely why I’ve avoided Grayson like the plague ever since. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, and I totally deserve what I get. Well, I don’t plan on falling into that trap ever again. Except…now our parents are dating, and Gray’s come up with a cockamamie plan to break them up that has disaster written all over it. ---- Hate to Love You “This book just made it to my favorites list for sure!” -Christy, GoodReads “This book was cute and had me instantly loving the pair together. Book Sports Illustrated Hockey Talk

Download or read book Sports Illustrated Hockey Talk written by Sports Illustrated and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2011-11-22 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the leader in sports writing comes a collection of stories that examine just about every aspect of the game: the players, the league and what it means to the fans. For true hockey fans, there is no sport as great, as fast, as competitive, or as important as their beloved hockey game. The teams, the organizations, and the players are a part of their family and Saturday night is better known as hockey night. As children, we hockey fans would wake at 6am, jump into the back of a cold station wagon and head off with Dad or Mom at the wheel to our hockey games. Sleep deprived, cold and tired - it didn't matter how low we felt because as soon as those skates were laced, it was game-on! We traded the cards, we followed the players, and we watched as our team fought through the regular season to earn their rightful place in the post season. There is nothing like the feeling of seeing your team go all the way, seeing them hoist that cherished Cup that Lord Stanley so kindly gifted to the Dominion of Canada, seeing the tears in the eyes of these grown men, these ice warriors. We love this game of ours, and we can't get enough, so thank you Sports Illustrated for bringing us more. In this book, Sports Illustrated's most prolific hockey writers give us the honest goods on hockey. They tell us about the players, the infractions, the best series, the most contentious of battles and the most glorious of victories. This is hockey in its truest form. This is hockey writing for hockey lovers and with an array of Sports Illustrated photos throw in for added benefit. This is just about the best damn book available on hockey, anywhere, period.
