Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Who's Who in American Methodism If the Gentle Reader find not in this book the name of his friend whom he regards of suficient prominence to be mentioned in who 's who IN american methodism, let him reflect that not all those nominated have honored us with the information we have requested concerning their life-records; and of those failing thus to respond it has been possible to include in the book only the most prominent leaders, whose biographies may be found in the files of the church papers. And if his friend has been overlooked in this process, let him be consoled with the hope that a later edition of this book may somewhat reduce the imperfections in evitable in the first edition of a work of this nature. To that end we eagerly invite suggestions from the Gentle Reader for improvement in the book, the broadening of its personnel and the elimination of errors and inaccuracies. We are grateful to all who have assisted in making the book possible; to all nominators for their nominations, to those nominees who have so generouv furnished information requested of them, and especially to Dr. James R. J'oy, editor of The Christian Advocate (new York), for the initial suggestions and plans from which this work has developed, and to Mr. William Rhinehart Barbour for most valuable advice and assist ance in producing it in this form. Book Lost Chapters Recovered From the Early History of American Methodism Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lost Chapters Recovered From the Early History of American Methodism The old book sheds light upon that part of our history where all before was dark as a starless midnight. It is the first record of the trustees and stewards of the old J ohn-street Church. It is a model book, both on account of its neatness and exactness. They were very particular in those days to re cord everything, small and great. What a reproof to the care less manner in which many church records are now kept. The old book is the basis of the work entitled, Lost Chapters Recovered. We do not publish all that it con tains, but make extracts from year to year, from the first to the conclusion. This work is something more than a mere local history. It describes the early and great men of Methodism, in whom the great Methodist family have a common interest. To make the chapters as complete as possible, I have not only followed the old book, but availed myself of other material that enriches the volume. Does the reader inquire where this old book has been? I answer, I cannot tell, only it has been lost for over half a century, and very recently discovered. The oldest ministers now in new-york and the oldest trustees had never seen the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Methodism: Its Divisions and Unification The largest ecclesiastical family of the Protestant type in the United States of America is the group of Churches called Methodistic. Beginning in colonial days, it has, throughout the entire existence of the nation, been in touch with all the stages of national development, and, exerting a marked influence upon all grades of society, it has had a very direct part in molding the national life. While it held strategic positions in the cities, it ministered also to the rural regions, and its pioneer preachers followed those who sought homes in the wilderness, and, by their religious services, they saved the frontier from lapsing into barbarism. It was also a unifying force, as in the colonial days and in other periods of the country's history, its itinerant ministers, like soldiers under orders, moved from one part of the land to another binding the people of the different sections together by a common spiritual bond. So great has been the influence of Methodism upon the people generally that no one can thoroughly understand the history of the United States who is not fairly familiar with the movements of Methodism from its beginning in this land. As Wesley had much to do in making a new England, across the sea, so his followers on this side the Atlantic have had much to do with the making of the great American Republic. Book That They May Be One

Download or read book That They May Be One written by Claudius B. Spencer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from That They May Be One" In Behalf of the Organic Union of American Methodism The hour has passed when the branches of the Methodist family in America (if they really desire organic union) will confine themselves to expressions of fraternal feeling merely or a desire for unification. The history of the present quadrennium makes such a display, if the deliverance confines itself to that, quite belated if not tiresome, because there is now before the Methodism of this country a concrete plan for achieving organic union between at least two of its branches, and those, in numbers, property, and influence, preeminent. Discussion may, indeed, take the form of an argument for organic union and an appeal for its consummation, but all that goes only part way in what is demanded from henceforth of such as take in hand any real or satisfying contribution to the subject. Book The Birth of Methodism in America

Download or read book The Birth of Methodism in America written by J. S. Reynolds and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birth of Methodism in America: With Photographs T is nearly a century and a half since the birth of Methodism in 1 America. From that angel-guarded cradle has grown a family numbering about one fifth of the population of the United States. This wonderful growth from so humble a birth has attracted the attention of the world. It has wielded a tremendous power in spreading the gospel of jesus Christ throughout the land which has had so much to do in shaping our present civilization. The purpose Of this little volume is not to give the history of Methodism in the United States, but to give all the history that is obtainable Of the Father Of Methodism in America. This is best accomplished by publishing the oration and addresses of the emi nent Methodists who participated in the ceremonies on the occa sion Of the removal Of the remains of the Father Of Methodism in America, and at the unveiling of the beautiful monument at Cam bridge, New York, erected by the National Local Preachers' Asso ciation of the' Methodist Episcopal Church to his memory. The aim Of the publisher is to perpetuate the name of the Father Of Methodism in America, and his contemporaries - names quite unknown, perhaps, to many of the present generation, but names honored and revered by all Methodists familiar with the early history of the Methodist Church in America. The beautiful half-tone photographs in this little volume are priceless. The plates from which they are taken are the only ones in existence and cannot be duplicated, thus making this little book a historical souvenir of great value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First American Itinerant of Methodism, William Watters His little volume, the culling of years from many sources, is given to the public because of the relation its subject sustains to what has been termed The greatest fact in the history of the Church of Christ - methodism - and with the hope that the perusal of its pages may serve to some extent in maintaining a spirit of love and loyalty to the Redeemer's cause. The life of William Watters, the first na tive itinerant of American Methodism, and that of my father, Henry Watters, yet living, and a descendant of the same family, more than span the history of the Church in this country. The present prodigious results of the Church, produced in so brief a time, aug ment the worth and importance of first things and first men. Book Methodism in America

Download or read book Methodism in America written by James Dixon and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodism in America: With the Personal Narrative of the Author; During a Tour Through a Part of the United States and Canada This volume has been prepared for publication under the influence of one only sentiment; namely, a desire to make the Methodist body in England acquainted with the state and progress of their system of religion in the United States. The author is not conscious to himself of any peculiar bias in his opinions; his aim being simply to state facts as they presented themselves to his attention, and leave his readers to draw their own inferences. Not being a political agent, he has not felt himself called upon to enter - except incidentally - into questions of civil government. His general impression is, however, that the Americans possess a larger amount of social prosperity than any other people upon earth. But the vexed question of republicanism lies beyond his purpose; and he begs to inform his reader beforehand, that whatever he may meet with is not to be construed into an expression of opinion, for or against this or any other form of government, but simply as historical. One thing, however, bearing on this subject may not be deemed out of place: it is, that the author's impressions of the true greatness of his own country were never so strong as during his visit to the States. America is the offspring of England. England has been reproduced in America. The character of the parent is seen in the athletic growth of the son. The blood, the religion, the ideas, the opinions, and, in substance the institutions, of England exist in the United States. On this soil the Anglo-Saxon race is asserting its supremacy on a gigantic scale, and with a rare energy and vigour. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States of America, Vol. 3 Thomas L. Rushmore, Esq. My Dear Sir: I submit to you the third installment of my narrative of the History of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The name of your family appears honorably in its pages, connected with one of its most interesting episodes, the introduction of Methodism into Canada. Many of its subjects have been meditated under the summer shelter of your trees, and its labor has been relieved by neighborly attentions which will ever associate the memory of your family with my task. In the two preceding volumes I have recorded the planting of the Church, and sufficiently denned its theological and ecclesiastical systems; in the present the story proceeds directly along its chronological line, suspended somewhat abruptly for the convenient size of the volume, but continued, with no further interruption, in the next, which is now passing through the press. Some important questions and topics, requiring more classified treatment, I have reserved for distinct chapters in the fourth volume, though they receive passing notice at their proper dates in the narrative. Many difficulties, some insuperable ones, have beset my labors. While we have abundant and well-verified documents for particular sections of the Church, for others, not less important, we have hardly any. Of some early preachers we have more or less ample biographies; of others, and of not a few who were chieftains of the cause, we have but scattered notices, incapable of being wrought into satisfactory sketches. I have done the best I could, perhaps all that any pen can now or ever do, to present these cases in their proper historical positions. Book The Centenary of American Methodism

Download or read book The Centenary of American Methodism written by Abel Stevens and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Centenary of American Methodism: A Sketch of Its History, Theology, Practical System, and Success My Dear Sir: Aside from our personal friendship and those distinguished services which have connected your name with some of the most important interests of the Church, I deem it proper to submit this work to you as the author of the resolution, in the Cleveland meeting of the Centenary Committee, appointing me to "prepare a centenary volume, setting forth such facts and showings as should properly come within the scope of such a work;" and the Rev. Dr. M'Clintock, "to co-operate" with me "by adding a chapter embodying the action of the Centenary Committee, and reflecting the spirit which pervaded its discussions." The Committee were doubtless determined, in their choice of a writer of the proposed book, by the fact that it has been my task for a number of years to prepare for the denomination a "History of the Religious Movement of the Eighteenth Century, called Methodism," etc., and "The History of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States of America." In the familiarity with the historical facts of Methodism which these writings have afforded me, I have found, however, my chief difficulty in preparing the present volume. There is so much that is heroic, and even romantic, in the early history of Methodism, that a writer, in whose mind such data are fresh and vivid, must be perplexed to know where to stop, what to record, or, at least, what to omit. Unless he would risk the design of his work, by its magnitude and consequent high price, he must, with whatever reluctance, omit names sacredly memorable, and incidents as marvelous as any in modern religious history. No one is authorized to speak for the Church on the subject presented. Some will doubt the propriety of this publication, unofficial as it is; but, after weighing the matter as carefully as possible, the persuasion is clear that the things herein said ought to be said, and that the present time for saying them is as opportune as any likely to come in the near future. It will be observed that he confines himself to his own views and impressions. He is not ignorant of the literature on the subject that accumulated in the years of controversy, but he passes it by in silence.
