Book Who s Up for Some Bonding

Download or read book Who s Up for Some Bonding written by Bill Amend and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2003-08 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Amend does it better than anybody else. His ability to present middle-class family life in a way that?s consistently fresh, irreverent, and downright wacky is unsurpassed. If asked?and they are each day they open the more than 1,000 newspapers that carry his strip?Amend?s audience of 25 million readers would say the same thing. That committed and connected audience will be delighted once again to discover Who?s Up for Some Bonding?, the latest in a series that includes 18 previous collections and eight treasuries, amounting to nearly two million FoxTrot books in circulation. This time around, Amend?s antics with the Fox family include the artist?s invitingly skewed views of ?normal? life: children who are light-years ahead of their parents when it comes to computers, siblings who could teach the CIA a thing or two about covert and ?get-even? ops, and parents who stumble around in a slight daze as they deal with all the ?amenities? of the modern world.Jason, Peter, Paige, and their parents, Roger and Andy, deliver the laughs. They all bring their unique personalities and perspectives to the FoxTrot world, whether the subject is technology, tofu recipes . . . or a son convinced he could be the next zillionaire Martha Stewart. FoxTrot surprises. FoxTrot charms. FoxTrot always satisfies.

Book excerpt: "Maggie understands that splatter for splatter's sake is boring. Psychopathy is boring. Coldness is boring. She's interested in feeling, and when her stories turn violent (as they frequently do), it's with a surreal emotional barbarity that distorts the entire world. You can mop up blood with any fabric. Maggie's concern is with the wound left behind, because the wound never leaves-it haunts. As a result, each of these stories leaves a wound of its own. Some weep, watching as you try (and fail) to recover. Others laugh. But never without feeling." -B.R. Yeager, author of Negative Space "And once finished, I felt like my tongue had been misplaced, guts heavy and expanded ... gums numb with a tongue that'd been put elsewhere, my mouth clean around a pipe weaving up through pitch and shadow ... and well past ready, primed for delight, waiting but knowing I had already been filled to skin; crying shit, hearing piss, fingernails seeping bile, pores dribbling blood, soles slopping off and out to meet a drain mid-floor ..." -Christopher Norris, author of Hunchback '88

Book Electrical Properties of Materials

Download or read book Electrical Properties of Materials written by Laszlo Solymar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-12 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electrical properties of materials are fundamental to many devices encountered in daily life and in today's industry, ranging from the semiconductors used in microelectronics to the dielectric materials in liquid crystal displays, the magnetic materials in the motors of electric cars and the superconducting materials in MRI scanners. All stem from the response of electrons to electric and magnetic fields. This book explains the phenomena, reviews the best materials, and presents the most relevant applications. The behaviour of electrons in atoms, liquids, solids, and periodic crystals is described, and the possibilities of new artificial materials are discussed. In themselves, electrons are intriguing, sometimes displaying particle-type and other times wave-type behaviour. Full understanding of wave properties requires quantum mechanics, often seen as a barrier due to the unfamiliarity of the concepts involved and the complexity of the mathematical apparatus needed. A key aim is to overcome these difficulties. Underpinning theory is explained as simply as possible. Classical and quantum mechanics are used as appropriate, in each case giving a full development and often presenting complementary viewpoints. Examples are presented in a comprehensive set of problems. This flexible approach allows full understanding both of fundamentals (for example, the properties of atoms in different columns of the periodic table) and of applications (the design of a new laser based on an artificially engineered band structure). The contents have been successfully refined over more than 50 years and are especially suitable for undergraduates and postgraduates in Materials and Electrical Engineering.
