Book excerpt: \"Love’s Journal\" is about a love that spans diversity and struggle. Ruby Sims is portrayed as one of the first true feminists to see past color in America, during the age of Slavery.\r Ruby leaves her homeland of England, travels across the sea to be bombarded with a series of barbaric realities that alter her state of being, strengthen her belief and reaffirm her faith.\r Ruby remains the underdog throughout her life as she appears as a Caucasian woman born in Europe to a black woman that she has never met. She marries, yet is separated from her husband to travel alone to America, ignorant to slavery, and gives birth to twins, one black the other white. Ruby, in spite of her situation, refuses to allow opposition to dictate the outcome of her circumstance. Ruby is a young woman taking full responsibility for the choices that she feels she is being forced to make. Motivated by the love of a man and the concern for her children, she will create a world in the 18th century that depicts sacrifice and endurance fueled by the fear of losing them all.\r This story spans 3 continents as it weaves several cultures tightly together to celebrate the common bond that women share as sisters, wives, and mothers. It is a story that blends desire with necessity and 60 years of love. A Christian Love story empowered by God.

Book It Comes from the People

Download or read book It Comes from the People written by Mary Ann Hinsdale and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The closing of local mines and factories collapsed the economic and social structure of Ivanhoe, Virginia, a small, rural town once considered a dying community "on the rough side of the mountain." Documenting the creative survival techniques developed by Ivanhoe citizens in the aftermath, It Comes from the People tells how this community organized to revitalize the town and demand participation in its future. Photos, interviews, stories, songs, poems, and scenes from a local theater production tell how this process of rebuilding gradually uncovered the community's own local theology and a growing consciousness of cultural and religious values. A significant aspect of this social transformation in Ivanhoe, as in many rural areas, was the emergence of women as leaders, educators, and organizers, developing new approaches to revive the economy and the people simultaneously. This book is unusually open about the difficult process faced by outside researchers working with community members to describe community life. It discusses the inherent dilemmas frankly and presents a model for those who engage in community studies and ethnographic research. Author note: Mary Ann Hinsdale is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Boston College. Helen M. Lewis is Interim Director of the Appalachian Center at Berea College in Kentucky. S. Maxine Waller is President of the Ivanhoe Civic League and directs community-based student volunteer programs in Virginia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fearing an imminent Nazi invasion, the British government interned 28,000 men and women of enemy nationality living in Britain in the spring of 1940. Most were Jewish refugees who, having fled Nazi persecution, were appalled to find themselves imprisoned as potential Nazi spies. Using oral histories, unpublished letters and memoirs, artifacts and newspapers from the camps, and government documents, We Built Up Our Lives tells the compelling story of sixty-three of these internees. It is a seldom-told part of the history of World War II and the Holocaust and a classic tale of human courage and resilience. We Built Up Our Lives describes the survival mechanisms relied upon by the Jewish refugees. Although the internees, imprisoned in Britain, the Isle of Man, Canada, and Australia, were adequately housed and fed and rarely mistreated, they were cut off from family, friends, school, and work--everything that had given meaning to their lives. Resisting boredom, anger, and despair, the internees made the best of a bad situation by creating education, culture, and community within the camps. Before and after as well as during the internment--in Nazi Germany and in Britain--educational resources and social networks were essential to the refugees' efforts to build up their lives. Equally important were personal qualities of courage, ingenuity, assertiveness, and resilience.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Modern Indian Literatures

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Modern Indian Literatures written by Ulka Anjaria and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Oxford Handbook of Modern Indian Literatures is a compilation of scholarship on Indian literature from the 19th century to the present in a range of Indian languages. On one hand, because of reasons associated with national academic structures, publishing resources, and global visibility, English writing gets privileged over all the other linguistic traditions in the scholarship on Indian literatures. On the other hand, within the scholarship on regional language literary productions (in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, etc.), the critical works and the surveys focus only on that particular language and therefore frequently suffer from a lack of comparative breadth and/or global access. Both reflect the paradigm of monolingualism within which much literary scholarship on Indian literature takes place. This handbook instead focuses on the multilingual pathways through which modern Indian literature gets constituted. It features cutting-edge literary criticism from at least seventeen languages, and on traditional literary genres as well as more recent ones like graphic novels. It shows the deep connections and collaborations across genres, languages, nations, and regions that produce a literature of diverse contact zones, generating innovations on form, aesthetics, and technique. Foregrounding themes such as modernity and modernism, gender, caste, diaspora, and political resistance, the book collects an array of perspectives on this vast topic"--
