Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The methods of disaster research are indistinguishable from those used throughout the social sciences. Yet these methods must be applied under unique circumstances. Researchers new to this field need to understand how the disaster context affects the application of the methods of research. This volume, written by some of the worlds leading specialists in disaster research, provides for the first time a primer on disaster research methods. Among the topics covered are qualitative field studies and survey research; underutilized approaches such as cross-national studies, simulations, and historical methods; and newer tools utilizing geographic information systems, the Internet, and economic modeling.

Download or read book Earthquake Engineering for Structural Design written by Victor Gioncu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-08-04 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in Earthquake Engineering have focussed on the capacity and response of structures. They often overlook the importance of seismological knowledge to earthquake-proofing of design. It is not enough only to understand the anatomy of the structure, you must also appreciate the nature of the likely earthquake.Seismic design, as detailed in

Book Practical Multivariate Analysis

Download or read book Practical Multivariate Analysis written by Abdelmonem Afifi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the sixth edition of a popular textbook on multivariate analysis. Well-regarded for its practical and accessible approach, with excellent examples and good guidance on computing, the book is particularly popular for teaching outside statistics, i.e. in epidemiology, social science, business, etc. The sixth edition has been updated with a new chapter on data visualization, a distinction made between exploratory and confirmatory analyses and a new section on generalized estimating equations and many new updates throughout. This new edition will enable the book to continue as one of the leading textbooks in the area, particularly for non-statisticians. Key Features: Provides a comprehensive, practical and accessible introduction to multivariate analysis. Keeps mathematical details to a minimum, so particularly geared toward a non-statistical audience. Includes lots of detailed worked examples, guidance on computing, and exercises. Updated with a new chapter on data visualization.

Book Practical Multivariate Analysis Fifth Edition

Download or read book Practical Multivariate Analysis Fifth Edition written by Abdelmonem Afifi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-07-05 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new version of the bestselling Computer-Aided Multivariate Analysis has been appropriately renamed to better characterize the nature of the book. Taking into account novel multivariate analyses as well as new options for many standard methods, Practical Multivariate Analysis, Fifth Edition shows readers how to perform multivariate statistical analyses and understand the results. For each of the techniques presented in this edition, the authors use the most recent software versions available and discuss the most modern ways of performing the analysis. New to the Fifth Edition Chapter on regression of correlated outcomes resulting from clustered or longitudinal samples Reorganization of the chapter on data analysis preparation to reflect current software packages Use of R statistical software Updated and reorganized references and summary tables Additional end-of-chapter problems and data sets The first part of the book provides examples of studies requiring multivariate analysis techniques; discusses characterizing data for analysis, computer programs, data entry, data management, data clean-up, missing values, and transformations; and presents a rough guide to assist in choosing the appropriate multivariate analysis. The second part examines outliers and diagnostics in simple linear regression and looks at how multiple linear regression is employed in practice and as a foundation for understanding a variety of concepts. The final part deals with the core of multivariate analysis, covering canonical correlation, discriminant, logistic regression, survival, principal components, factor, cluster, and log-linear analyses. While the text focuses on the use of R, S-PLUS, SAS, SPSS, Stata, and STATISTICA, other software packages can also be used since the output of most standard statistical programs is explained. Data sets and code are available for download from the book’s web page and CRC Press Online.

Book American Hazardscapes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Susan L. Cutter
  • Publisher : Joseph Henry Press
  • Release : 2002-02-01
  • ISBN : 0309074436
  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book American Hazardscapes written by Susan L. Cutter and published by Joseph Henry Press. This book was released on 2002-02-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barrier islands. Flood plains. Earthquake faults. Sometimes the environment poses threats to our well being, yet many of us continue to choose to live in risky or dangerous places. And on top of the "knowns" are the other, more hidden hazards related to environmental contamination that pose equally serious threats to our health and well being. But where are these places and what types of hazards are found there? American Hazardscapes examines the risks associated with living and owning property in diverse regions across the United States, offering dual perspectives: that of the geographer and that of the social science hazards researcher. The book summarizes what we already know about regional patterns of hazard events and losses during the previous three decades and goes further to shed light on the nature of the events themselves and their impact on society. Written for the relocating citizen and the policy maker alike, American Hazardscapes presents a regional ecology of disaster-prone or disaster-resistant states. It also offers thoughts on what local, state, and federal managers need to do to meet the challenge of reducing hazard losses in the next century.

Book Damage Based Earthquake Engineering

Download or read book Damage Based Earthquake Engineering written by P. Ghisbain and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2014-12-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the life of a structure, the smaller but more frequent earthquakes contribute more to the cumulative damage than the larger earthquakes on which structural design is traditionally based. This is a quantitative argument in favour of designing structures beyond what the codes require for life-safety. This book presents a computational method to evaluate the damage sustained by a building over its lifetime in a seismic environment. The ability to estimate future damage is relevant to a pair of current trends in earthquake engineering: a growing interest for preventing damage on top of protecting the public, and development of performance-based design. The proposed method combines probabilistic principles with traditional structural analysis, which makes it readily applicable to evaluation of planned structures in an engineering office. The analytical models, computational steps and supporting data used to produce an estimate of damage are discussed, and variants of the method with different run time and accuracy are considered. As an example of application to structural design, the book proposes a method to optimise placement of viscous dampers in buildings by minimising a life-cycle cost that includes the investment in damping and the losses due to future damage. Along with the results obtained in the course of other examples, the optimal solutions support a shift toward more resilient structures designed to mitigate structural and nonstructural damage beyond the traditional life-safety requirements.
