Book The Canadian General Election of 1997

Download or read book The Canadian General Election of 1997 written by Alan Frizzell and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1997-10-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The General Election of 1997 did not turn out as Jean Chretien and the Liberal Party had planned. Chretien called an early election, believing that his party was in a position to retain the majority they had won in 1993. They got their majority, but just barely. When the campaign began, the focus for many Canadians was the economy and job creation. National unity, however, quickly became a key issue, and triggered the most heated debates of the campaign. As was the case in 1993, the election of 1997 saw the country divided along regional lines. The Bloc Quebecois remained strong in Quebec, while the Progressive Conservatives and New Democrats dominated the maritime provinces. The Reform Party, meanwhile, won the west in a landslide, becoming the Official Opposition for the first time. It was Ontario, however, where the election was won: the Liberals won all but two seats in Canada’s largest province, and in the end that was enough to carry Jean Chretien to victory. The Canadian General Election of 1997 is a study of the key aspects of the campaign and the election itself. In addition to analyzing each party’s campaign, authors examine the role of the media, pollsters, the electoral system, and the voters. Articles are contributed by some of the best-known political writers in Canada today: Anthony Westell, Stephen Clarkson, Peter Woolstencroft, Alan Whitehorn, Keith Archer, Faron Ellis, AndrBernard, Chris Dornan, Ed Greenspon, Michael Marzolini, and Louis Massicotte. This readable volume will appeal to an academic as well as a general readership, and is ideally suited for libraries and political science courses. New to this year’s volume is a post-election survey by Jon Pammett.

Book Polling and Public Opinion

Download or read book Polling and Public Opinion written by Peter Marshall Butler and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-05-12 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of polling public opinion is widely recognized today. Indeed, it is sometimes argued that in mass societies, polls have also become an important medium for communicating ideas and beliefs, especially since many people have become less involved in community organizations and interest groups that formerly connected them to events and issues. Polling and Public Opinion examines the impact that polls have on the thoughts and behaviour of the public. Peter M. Butler considers the power of public opinion polls as an element of mass persuasion in media stories, advertising, and government policy. Using such controversial issues as free trade, health care, same-sex marriage, and national security, Butler argues that popular opinion on such hot-button topics as these can be guided and changed according to how polls are interpreted for and presented to the public. As well as analyzing the impact of polls on the public, Butler is concerned with demystifying the methods by which opinions are collected, showing that the techniques used to determine public opinion can be just as selective as those by which the results are disseminated. Focusing on many of the vital topics of our time, Polling and Public Opinion is an in-depth look at the rise of one of the most important but least understood methods by which politicians and governments gauge the popular will.

Book From Survival to Fulfilment

Download or read book From Survival to Fulfilment written by Paul Valent and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998. Paul Valent sees that the dialectic is not between "life and death" but between "life and trauma". This text theorizes that the big issues of life can now be approached through the science of traumatology. Through communication with, and observation of, people whose lives have been stretched under stress or disrupted by trauma, the fulfilling components of their lives can be defined, oriented and categorized. It introduces the theory on the back of clinical and historical material, examining the current state of such concepts as stress, trauma, defences, memories, post post-traumatic stress disorder, and other illnesses. It should be of interest to those in the healing professions or to those who work with traumatized individuals, lawyers, social workers, clergy and those in the humanities in general.

Book Political Marketing

Download or read book Political Marketing written by Darren G. Lilleker and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2005-08-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political marketing has become a global phenomenon as parties try to copy the market-oriented approach employed by Tony Blair to win power for New Labour in 1997. It raises fresh perspectives on the more established political marketing practices in the UK and US, such as how to incorporate political leadership within the market-oriented framework and the democratic implications when faced with the actual business of governing. This book also highlights how the market-oriented party approach has spread around the world, including Europe and the new democracies of Brazil and Peru. The collection also introduces the debate on whether such practices enhance or undermine democracy, raising important questions on the future of political marketing.

Book Divorce with Decency

Download or read book Divorce with Decency written by Bradley A. Coates and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This completely revised and updated fifth edition of the award-winning Divorce with Decency includes the most current research, statistics, and insights on the effects of divorce on spouses, their children, and society overall. Written by a prominent divorce lawyer with four decades of experience, it is the most comprehensive treatment of the legal, emotional, economic, psychological, and social aspects of romantic relationships, marriage and divorce available anywhere in a single volume. Initial sections look at the dynamics of divorce: the causal factors, the common “stages” from initial separation onward, and the complications surrounding each stage for older and younger couples and children. Important information on spouse abuse is also included. The book discusses key criteria in selecting an attorney and gives expert advice on directing and monitoring the course of a case efficiently and economically. Detailed background on critical legal issues is given, followed by case histories highlighting key points of divorce law. Extensive new sections have been added to this edition which provide key tips on preserving, improving, and possibly “saving” marriages. Key chapters focus on post-divorce issues of single parenthood and new relationships; as well as the rapidly changing nature of love, romance, “digital dating,” and other topics in this modern New Millennium. Informative yet highly readable (and occasionally amusing), Divorce with Decency has proven to be indispensable to anyone involved in a divorce, whether directly or indirectly.
