Book excerpt: The White Mountains National Recreation Area in Interior Alaska is an important "weekend wilderness" valued for the benefits of physical and mental health and spiritual well-being it provides to its users. This thesis explores those benefits as well as the history and geography of the White Mountains, its place within the national environmental and outdoor recreation movement and its prominence within the overall history of Alaska's development as a territory and state. Central to this exploration are the cabin logbooks placed at each of the White Mountains' twelve backcountry public-use cabins, in which users chronicle their time spent in the recreation area, in many cases in entertaining and revealing detail. The exploration further reviews the academic research that supports the outdoors, nature and wilderness as a source of spiritual renewal and quality mental and physical health. The thesis illustrates the White Mountains National Recreation Area is a product of the history of the environmental movement in the United States, from the influential Romantic Era writers of the late 19th Century to the political struggle for public interest lands in Alaska. Vigilance by the recreation area's managers and the public will be required for these benefits to continue long into the future.
