When Tarcia finds out the man she's been trying to snag already has a family, she becomes desperate and willing to go to any lengths to get back what she's lost—even when it means tearing up another family to pin this married man down for herself. Claiming pregnancy is just another move for her, but one that might end her up in jail. At the same time, Sammie—a familiar face from All That Drama and Lawd, Mo' Drama—is battling through her own relationship problems as well, and her insecurities are hijacking any chance she might have for happiness. And while Jasmine, Sammie's half-sister, tries to help her make it through the tough times, she might end up as more of a hindrance to Sammie's emotional well-being. As the characters search for the perfect life, readers are put in tune with their boiling emotions and learn the cost of basing one's happiness on having a mate. How far should one go in pursuing love, and what happens when all these go-getters start trippin' over each other in the chase? Who, if any of them, will discover true bliss in the end?

Book I Ain t Scared of You

Download or read book I Ain t Scared of You written by Bernie Mac and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2002-02-17 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My granddaddy would get mad at all of us. He couldn't just get mad at one of us. 'Ain't nobody got... You know what? Go to bed! All y'all, go to bed!' It'd be like two o'clock in the afternoon. 'Go to bed!'" Bernie Mac, the royal king of the Original Kings of Comedy, is salty and pissed off. The Chicago-bred performer has issues to get off his chest, and he doesn't mince words when he lets loose. No surprise, his live appearances have earned him a reputation as perhaps the truest voice of modern humor. Now, Mac has captured his comedic genius in print with his hilarious debut book. Tearing through a wide range of topics with equal parts insight and irreverence, Bernie Mac shares views that may not sit well with everyone -- especially if you're caught in the crosshairs of his rants ("Kids today don't get the kind of injuries we used to get as children -- cut, bruised. Now, these lil' muh'fuckas just continuously get shot"). Still, his way of looking at the world will probably make you think and it's all but guaranteed to make you laugh. Taking on superstar athletes, the movie business, his fellow comedians, his marriage, and his friends and family ("You always knew when your grandmother was at home because her wig was on that little Styrofoam stand"), Mac unleashes side-splitting riffs on sex, religion, hygiene, money, and more. Nobody is safe; nothing is sacred. Not even Bernie himself. Throughout I Ain't Scared Of You, Mac turns his humor inward, firing off self-deprecating salvos about his golf game, his own personal hypocrisies, even his sexual prowess -- "Women got toys...You can't compete with no dildo." Mac's insights have earned him critical acclaim and international popularity. Now, I Ain't Scared Of You captures Bernie Mac's humor whole -- unadorned, unpretentious, and unafraid.

Book My Mother Barack Obama Donald Trump And the Last Stand of the Angry White Man

Download or read book My Mother Barack Obama Donald Trump And the Last Stand of the Angry White Man written by Kevin Powell and published by Atria Books. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in the tradition of works by Joan Didion, bell hooks, Toni Morrison, and Eve Ensler, this “profoundly insightful and brilliantly inciting” (Dominique Morisseau, Obie Award-winning playwright) exploration of the soul of the United States—the past, the present, and the future Kevin Powell wants for us all, through the lens and lives of three major figures: his mother, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump. Ten short years ago, Barack Obama became president of the United States, and changed the course of history. Ten short years ago, our America was hailed globally as a breathtaking example of democracy, as a rainbow coalition of everyday people marching to the same drum beat. We had finally overcome. But did we? Both the presidencies of Obama and Donald Trump have produced some of the ugliest divides in history: horrific racial murders, non-stop mass shootings, the explosion of attacks on immigrants and on the LGBTQ community, the rise of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, a massive gap between the haves and the have-nots, and legions of women stepping forth to challenge sexual violence—and men—in all forms. In this collection of thirteen powerful essays, “Kevin Powell thoughtfully weaves together the connective tissue between gender, race, sexuality, pop culture, and sports through a series of raw, incredibly personal essays” (Jemele Hill, writer and ESPN anchor). Be it politics, sports, pop culture, hip-hop music, mental health, racism, #MeToo, or his very complicated relationship with his mother, these impassioned essays are not merely a mirror of who we are, but also who and what Powell thinks we ought to be.

They decided to head to Gabe's for sloppy bags. But things didn't go as planned. The BWGs were already there, and things got out of hand quickly. AOD saw the gun and picked it up, aimed it into the crowd, and fired off one shot. The bullet hit Mike-G in the face. He stood still and then dropped to the pavement. Hearing sirens, the CC Live boys ran toward the MLK school field, where they split up and ran their own ways. AOD hid under a car for a while. When he decided to come out, he threw the gun on the roof of the elementary school and started walking as if nothing happened. Once on the streets, he heard, "Get down before I shoot your little ass." While riding to the police station, the officer kept saying, "So you like to shoot people, huh?" AOD knew enough to keep his mouth closed. Because that was the CC Live's way of doing things.

Book This Life

  • Author : Quntos KunQuest
  • Publisher : Agate Publishing
  • Release : 2021-06-08
  • ISBN : 1572848480
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book This Life written by Quntos KunQuest and published by Agate Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Life is the debut novel by Quntos KunQuest, a longtime inmate at Angola, the infamous Louisiana State Penitentiary. This marks the appearance of a bold, distinctive new voice, one deeply inflected by hiphop, that delves into the meaning of a life spent behind bars, the human bonds formed therein, and the poetry that even those in the most dire places can create. Lil Chris is just nineteen when he arrives at Angola as an AU—an admitting unit, a fresh fish, a new vict. He’s got a life sentence with no chance of parole, but he’s also got a clear mind and sharp awareness—one that picks up quickly on the details of the system, his fellow inmates, and what he can do to claim a place at the top. When he meets Rise, a mature inmate who's already spent years in the system, and whose composure and raised consciousness command the respect of the other prisoners, Lil Chris learns to find his way in a system bent on repressing every means he has to express himself. Lil Chris and Rise channel their questions, frustrations, and pain into rap, and This Life flows with the same cadence that powers their charged verses. It pulses with the heat of impassioned inmates, the oppressive daily routines of the prison yard, and the rap contests that bring the men of the prison together. This Life is told in a voice that only a man who’s lived it could have—a clipped, urgent, evocative voice that surges with anger, honesty, playfulness, and a deep sense of ugly history. Angola started out as a plantation—and as This Life makes clear, black inmates are still in a kind of enslavement there. This Life is an important debut that commands our attention with the vigor, dynamism, and raw, consciousness-expanding energy of this essential new voice.

Book Misguided Love

Download or read book Misguided Love written by Kevin L. Sanders and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our children are the most precious gifts in this world. They are our joy. They are our future. They are our very lives. But who is to guide them? How do they learn what to do with what they have? So many people are abused from early age. Some carry that for the remainder of their lives and they pass the affliction from generation to generation. Many are not physically abused, and yet they still suffer from the lack of knowledge. Eric was a beautiful boy on his way to manhood. He never learned about the responsibilities of love and sex. Come along on this journey of a young, charismatic teenager whose charm and naivety lead him into a world of which he never knew existed. He, like many children are misguided into believing that there is no consequence to their actions. This story is a testimony to the survival of a global epidemic that continues to deteriorate the very fabric of our societies. Protect our children. Remember it is not always what we teach them that directs their paths in life; inevitably it is what we don't. Love must be guided. Misguided love will undoubtedly fail.

Book Confessions and Declarations of Multicolored Men

Download or read book Confessions and Declarations of Multicolored Men written by Frederick Douglass Alcorn and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a culturally situated study of the experiences and perspective garnered from of a group of post-secondary Black African American, bi-multi-racial male students aged 19-37. The undergirding interest was to see if there was an awareness of the group's manly inclinations, tendencies and predispositions and understand how such awareness projects and influences their quest and discipline for learning and to academically achieve. The sociological construct of "habitus", as conveyor of dispositions, inclinations, and tendencies, provides an analytical framework permitting an appreciation of interactions between personal identity, social belonging and approaches to learning and education. The result is an original and powerful account of the ways in which unspoken dominant mainstream intergroup cultural relationships, involving social-political attitudes, decision making, and behavioral reactions and responses, interact with internalized self-in-group or in ascription with group, oppression, repression, intellectual-cognitive-physical strategies, determination, and work, that have brought men of Black African American, bi-multi-racial descent, in the U.S., to their current social position. Unlike some public discourse in U.S. society, this is not a blame game, nor is it one of relinquishing self or group responsibility, but one based upon and motivated by a deeper understanding of complex facts. The prose can be best described as an ethnographical narrative, synthesizing a wealth of original observations with insights from scholarly and popular literature and media. Its original and engaging style may appeal to a broad audience including postsecondary educators and students, researchers studying the sociology of gender, African American identity, intercultural relational communications, student services, social work, and social psychology as well as mental and physical healthcare practitioners.
