Book White Cloud and the Golden Canyon

Download or read book White Cloud and the Golden Canyon written by Geoff Collins and published by A&J Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-02 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: White Cloud and the Golden Canyon is a story about a young Lakota brave who sets out on a dangerous journey into the wilderness in search of the mystical Golden Canyon and his true animal spirit. On his journey, he encounters three animal journey guides: Silver Wolf, Sky Bird, and Wind Runner. These journey guides protect White Cloud and give his wisdom and guidance as he searches for his true animal spirit. Life spirit animals or totems carry meaning, wisdom, and power. A person's life spirit animal is one who, through its own unique characteristics, will teach them important lessons as they travel through life. Finding your life spirit animal is like a going on a journey. In Native American cultures, as in many cultures of the world, this journey is called a "vision quest." This is a story of a young Native American brave who finds the strength, courage, and wisdom to follow his dream of finding his true animal spirit and taking his rightful place among the men of his tribe. This book is filled with beautiful color illustrations. The following is an excerpt from the book: The world became quiet, except for the pounding of moccasins on dry, dusty earth. The sun passed over the young brave's head and then began to slide down to the earth. Yet, he continued to run with his eyes focused to the north. After some time, he came upon a small creek and paused to drink. The water tasted good and gave him new energy. As he raised his head from the creek, he froze. There, no more than five paces in front of him, was the huge head of a black wolf. Its black coat was matted with mud and what looked like blood. A pair of crazed blood-red eyes stared back at him. White Cloud knew something was terribly wrong with the black wolf, because wolves hunt in packs, and a lone wolf will rarely attack a human. But this wolf was different. It seemed possessed by some dark and wicked spirit. White Cloud could smell the foul breath of the black wolf as it started to pace from side to side in front of him. The young brave's hand moved slowly toward his knife. Suddenly, the depraved black wolf curled its mouth into a hideous growl, exposing a row of sharp, sickly yellow teeth and gave out a blood curdling howl. Just as White Cloud began to draw his knife from its sheath, the crazed creature lunged forward with surprising speed directly at White Cloud's exposed throat. The young brave fell back as he drew his knife. Just as the black wolf was about to tear into White Cloud, another wolf with a brilliant silver-white coat plowed into the black wolf, ripping open its throat with a single snap of its powerful jaws. The black wolf tumbled backward howling in agony. It quickly ran away leaving a bright red trail of blood, with the white wolf streaking after him. White Cloud slowly rose to a sitting position. After some time, he found himself gazing into the face of the white wolf that had surely saved his life. This wolf had a brilliant silver-white coat and eyes that seemed to shine with a bright white light. Many heartbeats passed. Then the great white wolf spoke, but in a strange and magical way. The words did not come from the mouth of the wolf. The wolf, like other animals, does not speak as we do. His words flowed through the air, as if his thoughts had sound. White Cloud clearly heard the thoughts of the wolf. "Do not be afraid, White Cloud, for I am Silver Wolf and mean you no harm. I will be your protector and journey guide on this first part of your quest."

Book The Spirit and the Flesh

Download or read book The Spirit and the Flesh written by Walter L. Williams and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 1992-04-01 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the: Gay Book of the Year Award, American Library Association; Ruth Benedict Award, Society of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists; Award for Outstanding Scholarship, World Congress for Sexology Author’s note: Shortly after the second revised edition this book was published in 1992, the term "Two-Spirit Person" became more popular among native people than the older anthropological term "berdache." When I learned of this new term, I began strongly supporting the use of this newer term. I believe that people should be able to call themselves whatever they wish, and scholars should respect and acknowledge their change of terminology. I went on record early on in convincing other anthropologists to shift away from use of the word berdache and in favor of using Two-Spirit. Nevertheless, because this book continues to be sold with the use of berdache, many people have assumed that I am resisting the newer term. Nothing could be further from the truth. Unless continued sales of this book will justify the publication of a third revised edition in the future, it is not possible to rewrite what is already printed, Therefore, I urge readers of this book, as well as activists who are working to gain more respect for gender variance, mentally to substitute the term "Two-Spirit" in the place of "berdache" when reading this text. -- Walter L. Williams, Los Angeles, 2006

Book A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country

Download or read book A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country written by Rani-Henrik Andersson and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inception of the Ghost Dance religion in 1890 marked a critical moment in Lakota history. Yet, because this movement alarmed government officials, culminating in the infamous massacre at Wounded Knee of 250 Lakota men, women, and children, historical accounts have most often described the Ghost Dance from the perspective of the white Americans who opposed it. In A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country, historian Rani-Henrik Andersson instead gives Lakotas a sounding board, imparting the multiplicity of Lakota voices on the Ghost Dance at the time. Whereas early accounts treated the Ghost Dance as a military or political movement, A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country stresses its peaceful nature and reveals the breadth of Lakota views on the subject. The more than one hundred accounts compiled here show that the movement caused friction within Lakota society even as it spurred genuine religious belief. These accounts, many of them never before translated from the original Lakota or published, demonstrate that the Ghost Dance’s message resonated with Lakotas across artificial “progressive” and “nonprogressive” lines. Although the movement was often criticized as backward and disconnected from the harsh realities of Native life, Ghost Dance adherents were in fact seeking new ways to survive, albeit not those that contemporary whites envisioned for them. The Ghost Dance, Andersson suggests, might be better understood as an innovative adaptation by the Lakotas to the difficult situation in which they found themselves—and as a way of finding a path to a better life. By presenting accounts of divergent views among the Lakota people, A Whirlwind Passed through Our Country expands the narrative of the Ghost Dance, encouraging more nuanced interpretations of this significant moment in Lakota and American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a young frontiersman and Lakota maiden who marry and establish a trading post in the northwest region of the Louisiana Territory during the mid-1800s. It’s about dealing with their very real feelings of love and hate, strength and fear, joy and sadness as they face numerous challenges in bridging the gap between two seemingly incompatible cultures. It’s a story about fulfilling a dream and the perseverance it takes to accomplish it. Additionally, Wilderness Nation describes the expansive beauty and wonders of nature and the undeniable unity that exists among all creatures of life, all people, and God. The book further offers a unique and profound philosophy of life that’s championed by an enlightened group of Native Americans confined to a single village of a few hundred people. The Lakota philosophy takes a very realistic approach to the world. It accepts all its good aspects, including the joys of life, sound health and happiness, and justice when served. But it also understands the world with its numerous bad features of floods and bitter cold weather, the dangers of illness, and the violence and death that results from hostile enemies. In living a good life, each Lakota villager will eventually be united with the Great Spirit of Life.

Book Black Elk s Vision

Download or read book Black Elk s Vision written by S. D. Nelson and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Elk’s Vision is a stunning picture book biography of the celebrated Lakota-Oglala medicine man from award-winning author and illustrator S. D. Nelson. Black Elk (1863–1950) was a Lakota-Oglala medicine man and a cousin of Crazy Horse. This biographical account follows him from childhood through adulthood, recounting the visions he had as a young boy and describing his involvement in the battles of Little Big Horn and Wounded Knee, as well as his journeys to New York City and Europe with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. Award-winning author and member of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe S. D. Nelson tells the story of Black Elk through the voice of the medicine man, bringing to life what it was like to be Native American from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. The Native people found their land overrun by the wasichus (White Man), the buffalo slaughtered for sport, and their people gathered onto reservations. Interspersing archival images with his own artwork, inspired by the ledger-art drawings of the 19th-century Lakota, Nelson conveys how Black Elk clung to his childhood vision, which planted the seeds to help his people—and all people—understand their place in the Circle of Life. Backmatter includes a Lakota description of the Circle of Life, a brief history of the Lakota and a timeline.

Book Lakota Hoops

  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book Lakota Hoops written by Alan Klein and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-12 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 150 years the Lakota have tenaciously defended their culture and land against white miners, settlers, missionaries, and the U.S. Army, and paid the price. Their economy is in shambles and they face serious social issues, but their culture and outlook remain vibrant. Basketball has a role to play in the way that people on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation configure their hopes for a better future, and for pride in their community. In Lakota Hoops, anthropologist Alan Klein trains his experienced eye on the ways that Lakota traditions find a seamless expression in the sport. In a variety of way such as weaving time-honored religious practices into the game or extending the warrior spirit of Crazy Horse to the players on the court, basketball has become a preferred way of finding continuity with the past. But the game is also well suited to the present and has become the largest regular gathering for all Lakota, promoting national pride as well as a venue for the community to creatively and aggressively confront white bigotry when needed. Richly researched and filled with interviews with Pine Ridge residents, including both male and female players, Lakota Hoops offers a compelling look at the highs and lows of a community that has made basketball its own.

Book Spirits of Blood Spirits of Breath

Download or read book Spirits of Blood Spirits of Breath written by Barbara Alice Mann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-06 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before invasion, Turtle Island-or North America-was home to vibrant cultures that shared long-standing philosophical precepts. The most important and wide-spread of these was the view of reality as a collaborative binary known as the Twinned Cosmos of Blood and Breath. This binary system was built on the belief that neither half of the cosmos can exist without its twin. Both halves are, therefore, necessary and good. Western anthropologists typically shorthand the Twinned Cosmos as "Sky and Earth" but this erroneously saddles it with Christian baggage and, worse, imposes a hierarchy that puts sky quite literally above earth. None of this Western ideology legitimately applies to traditional Indigenous American thought, which is about equal cooperation and the continual recreation of reality. Spirits of Blood, Spirits of Breath examines traditional historical concepts of spirituality among North American Indians both at and, to the extent it can be determined, before contact. In doing so, Barbara Alice Mann rescues the authentically indigenous ideas from Western, and especially missionary, interpretations. In addition to early European source material, she uses Indian oral traditions, traced as much as possible to their earliest versions and sources, and Indian records, including pictographs, petroglyphs, bark books, and wampum. Moreover, Mann respects each Indigenous culture as a discrete unit, rather than generalizing them as is often done in Western anthropology. To this end, she collates material in accordance with actual historical, linguistic, and traditional linkages among the groups at hand, with traditions clearly identified by group and, where recorded, by speaker. In this way she provides specialists and non-specialists alike a window into the purportedly lost, and often caricatured, world of Indigenous American thought.
