  • Author : Rob Arnold
  • Publisher : Texas A&M University Press
  • Release : 2016-10-07
  • ISBN : 0875656544
  • Pages : 137 pages

Download or read book Shots of Knowledge written by Rob Arnold and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shots of Knowledge is a guidebook for whiskey lovers. Organized into approximately sixty illustrated essays, the book samples selected topics in whiskey production through the lenses of science and engineering. While the essays are subdivided into three sections—From Sunshine to Sugar, From Wee Beasties to White Dogs, and From Barrel to Brain—the reader is free to sip them in any order. The story commences with water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight; travels through the manufacturing process; and ends with the molecules that entertain the palate. Whether the topic is photosynthesis, bubble caps, oak speciation, or a mechanistic enzymology, the essays seek to reveal the simple beauty too often hidden in science and engineering. At approximately one page in length, each essay and accompanying artwork can be digested slowly at the rate estimated at three essays per bourbon or Scotch. Each essay is summarized in one or two sentences in a single “Shot of Knowledge.” Iconography anchors each essay in the production process. Inspiration for the book derived from a productive collision between individuals from TCU and the Firestone & Robertson Distilling Company.

Book excerpt: A gamut of shot recipes, from traditional shooters to grown-up shots made with market-fresh ingredients—from the author of 101 Tropical Drinks. Both classic and sophisticated shot recipes like you’ve never seen before. Forget what you think you know about shots from your college years. In 101 Shots, cocktail aficionado Kim Haasarud elevates the lowly shot to heights never seen before in this collection of recipes just as she’s done with her other books, including 101 Martinis and 101 Margaritas. For example, the Peach Fuzz Shooter, the Mini Bananas Foster, and the Archangel are made with fresh fruit purees. There are more traditional recipes as well, such as the Belfast Bomber made with Baileys and Irish whiskey dropped into a glass of Guinness, not to mention spicy offerings like the Yellow Sun Sangrita made with smoked paprika and Tabasco, and even savory ones like the Caprese Shooter made with tomatoes, basil, salt, pepper—and vodka, of course. What’s perhaps best about shot recipes is that there is almost no occasion when they’re not fun to serve and enjoy, from the Johnny Appleseed, a perfect drink for fall made with fresh cider, to the Red, White & Blue, a layered concoction ideal for Independence Day parties. With gelée shot recipes, too, this may be the last party cocktail book you’ll ever need.

The magical atmosphere of Inishmore and its residents will captivate readers' - Library Journal Cordelia James was once at the top of her game-a renowned street photographer with a massive social media following, gallery showings in Chelsea, and a lucrative book deal. But after the sudden death of her father, everything changed. Now, Cordelia can barely force herself to leave her apartment. That is, until she sees an ad for a summer gig at a cozy cottage on Ireland's picturesque Inishmore island. Rent-free, plus a small stipend if willing to do some menial housework and look after an elderly neighbour. Cordelia is on a plane before she can talk herself out of it. But practically the moment she steps off the boat, she crashes-literally-into Niall O'Connor, a grumpy local who's just returned home to Inishmore from Dublin. Cordelia's camera breaks, and Niall doesn't give a horse's arse about it. He's nursing a broken heart and trying to patch up a broken life, and he has no time for posh American tourists or their thousand-dollar hobbies. The more Cordelia's and Niall's paths cross, the more they make each other's lives hell. But as with all rivalries, their hatred is about to reach a tipping point-and it's going to heat up their cool coastal nights. Featuring a lovable band of quirky supporting characters, Worth a Shot is an emotionally gripping tale of love, passion, art, food, and finding your community-even if that community happens to be on a remote island thousands of miles from home.

Set in Thailand, it follows the journeys of six characters: two intelligent, imaginative Thai bargirls, a paranoid, well-paid American expatriate and his cynical, corrupting Australian mentor, a young American university graduate and an Isaan villager whose reoccurring presence borders on the mythical. Combining entertaining and dramatic narrative with poignant psychological themes, this is a novel that challenges the reader to look beneath the surface in order to try to understand what influences the characters' behavior. At the conclusion of the story we are shown that, by releasing ourselves from that which binds us, we are able to attain greater hope and, ultimately, freedom. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Bjorn Turmann was born and raised in Vancouver and has made Southeast Asia his home for over twelve years. A former Microsoft employee, Turmann is currently a writer, university lecturer, creative entrepreneur and independent filmmaker whose works have been screened at festivals in Australia and Thailand.
