Book excerpt: Why do survivors stay silent for so long? And what are the effects of silently holding onto trauma that ripple into the lives of the abused? Sparked by events that fueled the #MeToo movement, more people are speaking out, and more people are listening. This series of interviews is groundbreaking - it is cultivating open conversations in a safe, respectful, skillfully-facilitated environment. The interview series and Facebook community together are building momentum to changehow we live in relationship to women and to the Earth. The interviews in While We Were Silent nourish the hearts that have longed to be heard and met with compassion. The practitioners are full of passion for helping readers overcome obstacles to recovering from sexual abuse. They offer valuableinformation and proven modalities to move forward.Practitioners share their expertise and resources for overcoming sexual abuse through the arts, body work, energy healing, spiritual connection, reclaiming the deep feminine through connection with the Earth, healing ancestral patterns and more. There is a wealth of wisdom and resources, and diverse options to serve survivors at different stages of recovery. The Facebook group, While We Were Silent, nurtures hearts and broadens our understanding of how survivors can overcome biological responses of the nervous system to trauma, release internalized shame projected on them by the abuser, andgrieve the losses of abuse. At varying stages of recovery, some raw and others thriving, the community is generous with reaching out, connecting and supporting each other.Bearing witness with kindness and compassion, without trying to "fix," lightens the heaviness of abuse. While We Were Silent is a valuable contribution to healing, moving forward and bringing Love into collective shadow places that have long been buried and neglected. Spiritual bypass will not bring about the transformation we need to heal the Earth and ourselves. By deep diving into the shadow, we can retrieve what has been lost--true esteem and regard for the feminine, for our bodies and for our sexuality being sacred.~ Nancy Kern, Spiritual Coaching and thriving sexual abuse survivor, www.nancykern.com

Book And the Angels Were Silent

Download or read book And the Angels Were Silent written by Max Lucado and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2013-09-10 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can tell a lot about a person by the way he dies. In the last week of his life, Jesus deliberately sets his face toward Jerusalem—and certain death. This is no ordinary week. Even the angels are silent as they ponder the final days of Jesus Christ. This is no ordinary walk. Jesus doesn't chatter. He doesn't pause. He is on his final journey. He walks determinedly to the holy city, angrily into the temple, wearily into Gethsemane, painfully up the Via Dolorosa. And powerfully out of the vacated tomb. Master storyteller and best-selling author Max Lucado invites you: "Let's follow Jesus on his final journey. For by observing his, we may learn how to make ours. And discover what matters to God."

Book And the World Stood Silent

Download or read book And the World Stood Silent written by and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the 6,000,000 Jews who perished in the Holocaust, at least 160,000 were Sephardim: descendants of Jews exiled from Spain in 1492. Although the horror of the camps was recorded by members of the Sephardic community, their suffering at the hands of Nazi Germany remained virtually unknown to the rest of the world. With this collection, their long silence is broken. And the World Stood Silent gathers the Sephardim's French, Greek, Italian, and Judeo-Spanish poems, accompanied by English translations, about their long journey to the concentration and extermination camps. Isaac Jack Lévy also surveys the 2,000-year history of the Sephardim and discusses their poetry in relation to major religious, historical, and philosophical questions. Wrenchingly conveying the pathos and suffering of the Jewish community during World War II, And the World Stood Silent is invaluable as a historical account and as a documentary source.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2014 Western Writers of America Spur Award It was dangerous to be an abolitionist in the Deep South in the mid-19th century. But opposing slavery and helping runaway slaves escape toward Mexico or Canada was particularly risky in Texas in the final months before the Civil War. The state's rugged, open landscape offered few places to hide, and runaways often had to cover great distances just to get from one safe house to the next. Meanwhile, helping slaves flee or simply being suspected of anti-slavery feelings could get you and family members killed or your home or store torched by vigilantes. Henry Chappell's recent third novel, Silent We Stood, paints an engrossing, fact-based and frequently tense portrait of slavery and anti-slavery sentiments in North Texas in 1860. -Dallas Morning News Texas was the darkest corner of the Old South, too remote and violent for even the bravest abolitionists. Yet North Texas newspapers commonly reported runaway slaves, and travelers in South Texas wrote of fugitives heading to Mexico. On July 8, 1860, Dallas, Texas burned. Three slaves were accused of arson and hanged without a trial. Today, most historians attribute the fire to carelessness. Silent We Stood weaves the tale of a small band of abolitionists working in secrecy within Dallas's close-knit society. There's Joseph Shaw, an undertaker and underground railroad veteran with a shameful secret; Ig Bodeker, a charismatic, melancholic preacher; Rachel Bodeker, a fierce abolitionist, Ig's wife, and Joseph Shaw's lover; Rebekah, a freed slave who'll sacrifice everything for the cause; Samuel Smith, a crypto-freedman whose love for Rebekah exacts a terrible cost; and, towering above them all, a near-mythical one-armed runaway who haunts area slavers and brings hope to those dreaming of freedom.

Book excerpt: The story of Sergeant Roberto Linderos is a prime example of the Mexican Americans that fought and died for our country in WWII and their struggle to be treated equally. Originally from humble beginnings, the author tells of the prejudice he encounters during a world conflict, where equality is only truly found on the battlefield, where everyones life is at stake. What motivated Mexican American soldiers to fight for their country, even though they were treated as second-class citizens, could only be described and understood through the experiences shared in this book. Letters addressed to and from remote regions of the world known as V-mail or APO (Army Post Office) assured families their loved ones were still alive. On the other hand, a letter from home was a soldiers only means of communication to the outside world and was the greatest motivator and a delight to receive. These APO letters not only kept the soldiers spirits up but were their only link to sanity during the constant violence of a maddening war. Without the morale these letters provided, the war could not have been won.

Book A Teacher S Tale

Book excerpt: It was never in author Joe Gilliland’s plan to become a teacher, certainly not a college teacher and most certainly not an English teacher. But that’s what happened, and he’s never looked back. In A Teacher’s Tale, he explains, how by neither planning for nor seeking a life of learning and teaching, lacking a syllabus or lesson plan, he discovered that a life in academe lay in his path—a path he’s followed for more than fifty years. A Teacher’s Tale begins in 1932 with Gilliland’s first experiences in schooling and concludes in the summer of 1955 just as he completes his apprenticeship and stands on the brink of becoming a qualified instructor in a small college in east Texas. This memoir presents a collection of stories about his experiences as a teacher and a college student. A story of schooling deeply immersed in the arts and humanities, A Teacher’s Tale shares Gilliland’s love of the university and how it compelled him to seek a life devoted to teaching, primarily in the community college arena. Through this narrative, he brings together a philosophy of higher education based on the importance of arts and humanities in today’s high- tech world.

Book excerpt: What if prayer could be simple rather than strenuous? Anxious, results-driven Christians can never pray enough, serve enough, or study enough. But what if God is calling us not to frenzied activity but to a simple spiritual encounter? What if we must merely receive what God has already given us? In Flee, Be Silent, Pray, writer and contemplative retreat leader Ed Cyzewski guides readers out of the anxiety factory of contemporary Christianity and toward a God whose love astounds those quiet long enough to receive it. With helpful guidance into solitude, contemplative prayer, and practices such as lectio divina and the Examen, Cyzewski guides readers toward the Christ whose yoke is easy and whose burden is light. Ready to shed the fear of the false self and the exhaustion of a duty-driven faith? Flee. Be silent. Pray.
