Book Where There s a Will There s a Way

Download or read book Where There s a Will There s a Way written by Carl J. Barger and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way Ma was a crafty lady who had been taught well by her father and mother, Elias Samuel Totten and Nancy Jane Bradford Totten. She learned to cook, sew, plow, hoe, pick cotton, do housework, and dry apples and peaches for fried pies. She worked like a man. She could plow behind a mule as well as most men. She could also pull her weight in using a crosscut saw for cutting logs and firewood for the fireplace, kitchen cook stove, and the big iron potbelly heating stove that heated our house. In Carl J. Barger’s latest book, Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way, he writes of growing up in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains in Cleburne County, Arkansas. He relates his struggles and triumphs as the ninth child in a family of eleven children born during the Great Depression to Edward and Mamie Ann Totten Barger of Higden, Arkansas. Growing up in the small community of Higden, population 122, he experienced poverty as well as a thirst for knowledge and understanding, always dreaming of a better life. He remembers lying awake at night listening to his mother crying, while she wondered where the family’s next meal was coming from. His Pa would say, “Mamie, I’m going to take care of that. Don’t you worry!” Barger includes the people who made a difference in his life; people who challenged him, motivated him, and influenced the man he became. He gives credit where credit is due. Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way was written to inspire others who are struggling, not knowing what the future holds for them.

Because of Nietzsche's evocative style and provocative ideas, his philosophy generates passionate reactions. His works remain controversial, due to varying interpretations and misinterpretations of his work. In the Western philosophy tradition, Nietzsche's writings have been described as the unique case of free revolutionary thought, that is, revolutionary in its structure and problems, although not tied to any revolutionary project. Some prominent elements of his philosophy include his genealogical critique of religion and Christian morality; the related theory of master–slave morality; the characterization of the human subject as the expression of competing wills, collectively understood as the will to power; and influential concepts such as the Übermensch and the doctrine of eternal return.

Book Genealogy and Ontology of the Western Image and its Digital Future

Download or read book Genealogy and Ontology of the Western Image and its Digital Future written by John Lechte and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the emerging dominance of digital technology, the time is ripe to reconsider the nature of the image. Some say that there is no longer a phenomenal image, only disembodied information (0-1) waiting to be configured. For photography, this implies that a faith in the principle of an "evidential force" – of the impossibility of doubting that the subject was before the lens – is no longer plausible. Technologically speaking, we have arrived at a point where the manipulation of the image is an ever-present possibility, when once it was difficult, if not impossible. What are the key moments in the genealogy of the Western image which might illuminate the present status of the image? And what exactly is the situation to which we have arrived as far as the image is concerned? These are the questions guiding the reflections in this book. In it we move, in Part 1, from a study of the Greek to the Byzantine image, from the Renaissance image and the image in the Enlightenment to the image as it emerges in the Industrial Revolution. Part 2 examines key aspects of the image today, such as the digital and the cinema image, as well as the work of philosophers of the image, including: Roland Barthes, Walter Benjamin, Gilles Deleuze, Jean-Paul Sartre and Bernard Stiegler.

Book Between Genealogy and Epistemology

Download or read book Between Genealogy and Epistemology written by Todd May and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1993-03-26 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michel Foucault introduced a new form of political thinking and discourse. Rather than seeking to understand the grand unities of state, economy, or exploitation, he tried to discover the micropolitical workings of everyday life that have often founded the greater unities. He was particularly concerned with how we understand ourselves psychologically, and thus with how psychological knowledge developed and came to be accepted as true. In the course of his writings, he developed a genealogy of psychology, an account of psychology as a historically developed practice of power. The problem such an account raises for much of traditional philosophy is that Foucault's critique of psychological concepts is ultimately a critique of the idea of the mind as a politically neutral ontological concept. As such, it renders politically suspect all forms of subjective foundationalism, and the epistemological justification for Foucault's own writings is then called into question. Drawing on the writings of such Anglo-American philosophers as Wilfrid Sellars and Ludwig Wittgenstein, Todd May refutes the idea that Foucault's critiques of knowledge, and especially psychological knowledge, undermine themselves.

Book I ve Seen It All at the Library

Download or read book I ve Seen It All at the Library written by Jonathan M. Farlow and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-04-16 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people think of libraries as solemn places filled with dusty books and dustier people. This "memoir and more" of a career librarian explodes that misconception. Recounting his years behind the reference desk with an emphasis on the strange behavior of patrons, the author shows that public libraries are anything but staid and quiet. The history of libraries--as long as the history of the written word itself--is also discussed. That libraries have grown as colorful as the society they serve is proof that these essential institutions are as vital as ever.
