While visiting her aunt in Marietta, Ohio, a charming river town, Ellie encounters towboat captain Wyatt and feels a searing attraction to him. But thanks to past and subsequent wounds, her attempts at opening herself to love seem futile. Her hope for love and her determination to find the place she belongs are further complicated by her tendency to make impulsive decisions. But it's not until their diverse worlds collide in Jordan that they realize the power of their connection. With the refugee program as their reuniting bond, they must cross the stars and defy their clashing cultures to protect their forbidden love. With the culturally rich Jordanian backdrop, Cross the Stars will take you on a journey into the geographical and cultural Middle East, the resilience of humankind amidst turbulent civil unrest, the parallel unrest of two lovers' clashing fates, and the diversity they must challenge with every breath to keep their love alive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the four hundred thousand years that humanity has been collecting fossils, sea urchin fossils, or echinoids, have continually been among the most prized, from the Paleolithic era, when they decorated flint axes, to today, when paleobiologists study them for clues to the earth’s history. In The Star-Crossed Stone, Kenneth J. McNamara, an expert on fossil echinoids, takes readers on an incredible fossil hunt, with stops in history, paleontology, folklore, mythology, art, religion, and much more. Beginning with prehistoric times, when urchin fossils were used as jewelry, McNamara reveals how the fossil crept into the religious and cultural lives of societies around the world—the roots of the familiar five-pointed star, for example, can be traced to the pattern found on urchins. But McNamara’s vision is even broader than that: using our knowledge of early habits of fossil collecting, he explores the evolution of the human mind itself, drawing striking conclusions about humanity’s earliest appreciation of beauty and the first stirrings of artistic expression. Along the way, the fossil becomes a nexus through which we meet brilliant eccentrics and visionary archaeologists and develop new insights into topics as seemingly disparate as hieroglyphics, Beowulf, and even church organs. An idiosyncratic celebration of science, nature, and human ingenuity, The Star-Crossed Stone is as charming and unforgettable as the fossil at its heart.

Book excerpt: The astronaut crime that shocked the world Star Crossed transports readers to the moment the news broke that one of America’s heroes, an astronaut who had flown aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery& just months before, had been arrested for a very bizarre crime. Lisa Nowak had driven 900 miles from Houston to Orlando to intercept and confront her romantic rival in an airport parking lot—allegedly using diapers on the trip so she wouldn’t have to stop. Nowak had been dating astronaut William “Billy” Oefelein when she learned that Oefelein was seeing a new girlfriend—U.S. Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman. The “astronaut love triangle” scandal quickly made headlines. The world watched as Nowak was dismissed from NASA, pleaded guilty to a felony, and received an “other than honorable” military discharge. An award-winning investigative reporter who covered Nowak’s criminal case, Kimberly Moore offers behind-the-scenes insights into Nowak’s childhood, her rigorous training, and her mission to space. Moore ventures inside the mind of the detective who studied the actions Nowak took that fateful February night. She includes never-before-told details of Nowak’s psychiatric diagnosis, taking a serious look at how someone so accomplished could spiral into mental illness to the point of possible attempted murder. This book spotlights the often-overlooked psychological health of astronauts, exploring how they are cared for by NASA doctors and what changes have been made in recent years to support space travelers on long-term missions. Expertly told, Moore’s story is a riveting journey inside the high-pressure world of one of America’s most elite agencies and the life of one beleaguered astronaut.

This book was released on 2014-09-03 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a series of papers we delivered at the annual Shakespeare conference held at the Università Cattolica of Milan over three years. During this period our research interests ran on more or less parallel lines, moving from Shakespeare’s sonnets to the Bard’s influence on Keats and Shelley. If this was probably due to a similar way of interpreting the conference titles, it was just a coincidence that both of us devoted particular attention to King Lear. This play, we discovered, was particularly relevant to the work we were autonomously carrying out, Luisa Camaiora being then engaged in writing her book on Keats’s Odes, and Carlo Bajetta editing Shelley’s Peter Bell. As a consequence, we started mentioning articles, discussed recent research, and there was much swapping of books – which created more than a little confusion in our bookshelves, and much irritation in some University librarians. When we looked back at these essays, we were surprised to note that a fil rouge seemed to run through them. From the ambiguities of one of Shakespeare’s most famous sonnets, number 116, they move on to describe the allusive structure of the sonnet-chorus of Romeo and Juliet, hence to the complexities of the initial scene of King Lear and the uses to which this play was put by Keats and Shelley; they eventually come back to Keats’s relationship with the works of the Bard, and finally to yet another sonnet, which constitutes in many ways an original re-reading of Shakespeare. ‘Shakespearean Readings’, alluding to both textual variants, critical analysis, and a writer’s understanding of a literary work, seems to be a fitting title to describe this red thread. ‘'Passage' and 'Traffic' in Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Textual Madness: King Lear’s peregrinations’ were first published in To go or not to go? Catching the moving Shakespeare (ed. L. Camaiora, Milan, I.S.U. Università Cattolica, 2004), ‘John Keats and his Presider Shakespeare’ and ‘Shakespeare’s Sonnet 12 and Keats’s “When I have fears”’ appeared in a different form in L’Analisi Linguistica e Letteraria, 7:1, 1999, while ‘Shelley’s Shakespearean Mockery of Wordsworth’, which was read at the Shakespeare Days conference in April 2003, both relies on and integrates some sections of the introduction to Peter Bell: the 1819 Texts which appeared in December of the same year (Mursia, Milan).
