Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Where the Path Breaks The girl's face faded away for an instant, and the face of a man seemed to be reflected in a blurred mirror. The eyes of the soul looked into the man's eyes and knew them. They were his own. He was that man, or had been. What a dull dog you are, he heard himself say, as if he had said it long ago, said it often, and the echo had followed him to this twilit place beyond death. He thought the face was rather like a dog's, an ugly mongrel dog's. The girl could not possibly care for him! Yet some one had told him that she did care, and that she would marry him if he asked. I 'm her mother. I ought to know! As he heard the woman's vorce speaking the words, he saw the face that belonged to the voice: the face of a pretty woman, young looking till the girl came near. The girl had come now! The cream-and-rose tints of her youth made the other face old. This was rather pathetic. He remem bered that it had so impressed him more than once. Yet he had never been able to like the mother. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paths Crossing: A Romance of the Plains I am going to say right now that I have little to do with this story, so that my personal feelings are neither here nor there. I had left woman and all back in the states along with things I just had to forget, and had begun life again out in this new country, - this glorious country, where a man is a man in spite of what his past has been, where they look you in the eyes and grip your hand, and no matter how hang-dog you may feel you know there is room for you here. When, in 1889, the government of the United States gave the first portion of Oklahoma to the people, it opened an asylum to those who had no longer a home in the East. True, there were many who were bad among those first settlers. All the flotsam and jetsam of the country went crashing in that mad race into the Territory. Those first days, - wonderful days, the like of which I never expect to see again, - were filled with dark happen ings. There were bitter feuds, lawlessness, and crime. But, in spite of it all, the good triumphed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Modern Print Activism in the United States

Download or read book Modern Print Activism in the United States written by Rachel Schreiber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosion of print culture that occurred in the United States at the turn of the twentieth century activated the widespread use of print media to promote social and political activism. Exploring this phenomenon, the essays in Modern Print Activism in the United States focus on specific groups, individuals, and causes that relied on print as a vehicle for activism. They also take up the variety of print forms in which calls for activism have appeared, including fiction, editorials, letters to the editor, graphic satire, and non-periodical media such as pamphlets and calendars. As the contributors show, activists have used print media in a range of ways, not only in expected applications such as calls for boycotts and protests, but also for less expected aims such as the creation of networks among readers and to the legitimization of their causes. At a time when the golden age of print appears to be ending, Modern Print Activism in the United States argues that print activism should be studied as a specifically modernist phenomenon and poses questions related to the efficacy of print as a vehicle for social and political change.
