Book excerpt: On her mother's urging to go on and have a big, beautiful, and adventurous life, Karen leaves her home in the country at the tender age of seventeen. Abandoning her family, her horse, and her teenage dreams, she embraces life in the big city of Vancouver, British Columbia. Looking for love in all the wrong places while maneuvering through dead-end jobs, the night club scene, and a slew of unsavory characters, Karen finds herself perpetually searching for Mr. Right. Lacking direction in a lifestyle that involves drugs, alcohol, and the wrong men, Karen wonders when her knight in shining armour will arrive. Where Is My Happy Ending is a true story about a girl who enters adulthood after having been raised in a home plagued by mental illness. Left to her own devices, Karen stumbles through the highs and lows, tragedies and turmoils of the 1970s disco scene, '80s era of modern love, and into the 1990s, not sure how she got there or how to get out. Karen's wit, storytelling abilities, and simplicity in looking at life will keep you engaged from start to finish, with an evident reminder-it's not what the world can bring to you, it's what you can bring to the world. Karen is the author of her award-winning first memoir, Looking for Normal, a recipient of the Rubery Book Excellence Award in the category of Women's Health.

Book Life After Change

Download or read book Life After Change written by Keisha Starnes and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was born a normal baby girl but ended up getting very sick at age four with a condition. However, the doctors didn’t understand the reason of the condition, the symptoms. First, it was cerebral palsy, but as I got older, they took more tests and gave me several different medication to take. They told my mom I was not going to walk or do anything for myself. As I got older, I surprised them more and more. I also went to school, never once wanting to stay home because of the teasing. I overcame what the doctors and others said I would not do. I was always on honor roll, and I dress myself sometimes. I feel like I had to work extra harder to prove myself. I had a mother who liked to walk, so we walked to most of my doctors’ appointments. I graduated and also worked at the same time. I did have a few challenges in my life, but I would tell myself, “Keisha, you have this. You’ve been through everything, more than you can imagine, but it’ll just make you stronger.” I overcame so much in my life. My goals are to encourage everyone going through the challenges we all face in life to never give up and to never allow anyone to label you. Having my kids was the bigger blessing because of the condition I have; I have three healthy babies. I had to learn what worked for me and what I wanted. Some people will tell you what they think, but remember, you have your own mind and your own life. Just because you have a disability, doesn’t mean you can’t do things. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.

Book Shout Your Abortion

Download or read book Shout Your Abortion written by Amelia Bonow and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the U.S. Congress’s attempts to defund Planned Parenthood, the hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion became a viral conduit for abortion storytelling, receiving extensive media coverage and positioning real human experiences at the center of America’s abortion debate for the very first time. The online momentum sparked a grassroots movement that has subsequently inspired countless individuals to share their abortion stories in art, media, and community events all over the country, and to begin building platforms for others to do the same. Shout Your Abortion is a collection of photos, essays, and creative work inspired by the movement of the same name, a template for building new communities of healing, and a call to action. Since SYA’s inception, people all over the country have shared stories and begun organizing in a range of ways: making art, hosting comedy shows, creating abortion-positive clothing, altering billboards, starting conversations that had never happened before. This book documents some of these projects and illuminates the individuals who have breathed life into this movement, illustrating the profound liberatory and political power of defying shame and claiming sole authorship of our experiences. With Roe vs. Wade on the brink of reversal, the act of shouting one’s abortion has become explicitly radical, and Shout Your Abortion is needed more urgently than ever before.

Book excerpt: The name-calling and hurtful actions from others began the day Linda entered the public school system. Searching to belong, she learned quickly that a snappy comeback was her best defence. Born in 1947, just after the Second World War, into a home of loving parents, eccentric grandparents and a few unconventional relatives, Linda was a precocious, happy child. Regrettably, she was bullied in life as she struggled with obesity. Her saviour was "anything western" television shows, movies, horses, dude ranches and eventually cowboys. With many obstacles along the way, Linda blazed a trail from Vancouver's big city to the dusty Cariboo to follow her dream of horses, ranches, and riding. Linda's story is heartwarming and heart-wrenching, uncommonly adventurous and unusually comical. Anyone who has struggled with not fitting into what society thinks to be "normal" will find Linda's experiences encouraging and relatable. Allow Linda to inspire and remind you that it is not about the happily ever after, it is the joy you create along the way when it seems the world is against you that matters. Karen Harmon is the author of two previous award-winning books: Looking for Normal and Where is My Happy Ending? A Journey of No Regrets. Fat and Beautiful: A Story of Love, Pain and Courage is another book to add to Karen's collection of memoirs filled with family drama, humour and nostalgia.
