Book It s a Bear And It s Coming

Download or read book It s a Bear And It s Coming written by Charlie Rohrbaugh and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when an ordinary hunter is exposed to some rather extraordinary opportunities? From the first hunt in Canada’s British Columbia it’s easy to see that the guides and supporting staff are the heroes of these adventures. Too often they are the unsung and tireless professionals that make or break a hunter’s trip. In the end, it is their hunting prowess that makes for a successful hunt, whether or not an animal is taken. It all begins in the wilderness of British Columbia on hunts for elk, moose, caribou and mountain goat. The sheer vastness of the wilderness and rugged remoteness of the region adds an element of difficulty and danger not normally encountered in other locales. Add to that the presence of the fearless grizzly bears prowling the mountains and things can get dicey in the blink of an eye. “Some days you get the bear, and some days the bear gets you,” takes on an entirely new meaning as you start the day, hoping today doesn’t fall into either of those categories. From British Columbia the scene shifts to Wyoming for mule deer and turkeys followed by a whirlwind trip to South Africa for plains game. Barely back from South Africa long enough to do laundry, we headed off to Idaho on a spring black bear hunt. Two more trips to Wyoming followed for antelope and elk before heading back to South Africa for Kudu and Waterbuck. Between the last two Wyoming trips, our first grandchild was born and the second was on the way. That was the impetus for beginning to document the details of these trips. Someday, hopefully our grandchildren will be able to read about my experiences with the same interest I used to read about others’ hunts when I was a boy. Then maybe, just maybe one or more of them will find their way out to where the wild things live to see, hear, smell and feel for themselves what it’s like to be truly alive and free.

Book Land of the Bear

  • Pages : 279 pages

Download or read book Land of the Bear written by Denny Geurink and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book relates all the excitement, mystery, danger, and adventure of living and traveling in Siberia. It all started back in 1991, when I received an invitation via the Gorbachev government, in conjunction with a mining company working with the Soviet Union, to visit, write about, photograph, and film what the country had to offer American tourists and hunters. This was the era of "Glasnost" and "Perestroika." Gorbachev wanted to bring in American tourists to bolster the sagging economy. That first expedition led to 22 years traveling back and forth to the former Soviet Union - now Russia - where I hung out with the KGB, met numerous dignitaries, and lived in tents and trappers' cabins in Siberia with the local natives. We were attacked by bears, wild boars, and moose! Among those traveling with me were Apollo Astronaut Jim McDivitt, who was stalked by a Russian bear, and a four-star air force general, Earl O'Loughlin, who used to fly spy plane missions over the former Soviet Union. This made for a very interesting confrontation with the KGB. During my time in Siberia, I got to know many of the native people, who relayed numerous sad and harrowing stories of encounters with giant bears. The book is jam-packed with historical perspective of what was happening at this time in Russia, including how the people lived, worked, survived, and what they thought of Americans. While framed by hunting, this book is as much about the people and the culture of Siberia. About the Author Now retired, Michigan native Denny Geurink was previously a teacher and the Midwest editor for Field & Stream magazine. He wrote a weekly newspaper outdoor column for nearly forty years. Publisher's website: http: //sbprabooks.com/DennyGeurink

Book In the Bear s House

Download or read book In the Bear s House written by N. Scott Momaday and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2011-10-04 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Let me say at the outset that this book is not about Bear (he would be spoken of in the singular and masculine, capitalized and without an article), or it is only incidentally about him. I am less interested in defining the being of Bear than in trying to understand something about the spirit of wilderness, of which Bear is a very particular expression. . . . Bear is a template of the wilderness."--from the Introduction Since receiving the Pulitzer Prize in 1969 for his novel House Made of Dawn, N. Scott Momaday has had one of the most remarkable careers in twentieth-century American letters. Here, in In the Bear's House, Momaday passionately explores themes of loneliness, sacredness, and aggression through his depiction of Bear, the one animal that has both inspired and haunted him throughout his lifetime. With transcendent dignity and gentleness, In the Bear's House celebrates Momaday's extraordinary creative vision and evolution as one of our most gifted artists.

Book excerpt: “Sleeping Bear is…one of those rare novels that keeps getting better and better and better. Remember the author’s name—Connor Sullivan.” —James Patterson A former Army veteran seeking solitude in the Alaskan wilderness after her husband’s death finds herself a pawn in a deadly game with Russia in this white-knuckled and “heart-stopping thrill ride” (Chris Hauty, author of Deep State). After her young husband’s untimely death, Army veteran Cassie Gale decides to take a few days of solitude in the Alaskan wilderness before she starts her new job. But when she fails to show up on her first day and her dog is discovered injured at her wrecked campsite, her father knows that this is much more than a camping trip gone awry. As it turns out, Cassie’s not the first person to disappear without a trace in Alaska’s northern interior. Bears. Wolves. Avalanches. Frostbite. Starvation. There are many ways to die in here. But not all disappearances can be explained. Cassie’s is one of them, along with a number of other outdoor enthusiasts who have vanished in recent years. Regaining consciousness in a Russian prison, Cassie finds herself trapped in a system designed to ensure that no one ever escapes alive. It will require all her grit and skills to survive. Meanwhile, her father rushes to outrun the clock, scouring thousands of acres, only to realize she’s been taken by a nefarious adversary—one with the power of the Eastern Bloc behind it. Ties to his past life, one full of secrets, threaten to surface. He knows there’s a price to be paid, but he’s determined it won’t be his daughter. Timely, electrifying, and perfect for fans of Vince Flynn and Brad Thor, “Sleeping Bear clamps you in its jaws and doesn’t let go. A fierce, relentless beast of a novel” (Tess Gerritsen, New York Times bestselling author).
