Download or read book Where Homeland Meets National Security Protecting Our Land Domestically Abroad First Edition written by Monique Maldonado and published by Cognella Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homeland and National Security: Understanding America's Past to Protect the Future examines the events that have led to the establishment of the Department of Defense and how national security has changed since then. The September 11, 2001 attacks on American soil resulted in the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, the country's third largest Cabinet-level department, highlighting homeland security as another primary objective in protecting the nation. Early chapters provide historical perspective, describing the nature and practice of national security from the American Revolutionary War through the post-Cold War era. The latter half of the book provides a detailed examination of homeland and national security concepts as we now understand it, which includes consideration of traditional terrorism, homegrown terrorism, innovative terrorism, natural disasters, conflict, specific statutes, initiatives, and agencies, and the roles of intelligence, emergency preparedness, and communications. Each chapter includes key terms, learning objectives, case studies, application activities, and a quiz. Homeland and National Security can be used in courses of political science, domestic and international terrorism, homeland security, emergency management, international relations, national security, homeland security strategy, policy, and specific aspects of criminal justice. The book will also be of interest to government agencies dealing with security issues, and lay readers interested in a critical area of American policy. Book How to Think about Homeland Security

Download or read book How to Think about Homeland Security written by David H. McIntyre and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-05-03 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1:The Imperfect Intersection of National Security and Public Safetyexplains homeland security as a struggle to meet new national security threats with traditional public safety practitioners. It offers a new solution that reaches beyond training and equipment to change practitioner culture through education. This first volume represents a major new contribution to the literature by recognizing that homeland security is not based on theories of nuclear response or countering terrorism, but on making bureaucracy work. The next evolution in improving homeland security is to analyze and evaluate various theories of bureaucratic change against the national-level catastrophic threats we are most likely to face. This synthesis provides the bridge between volume 1 (understanding homeland security) and the next in the series (understanding the risk and threats to domestic security). All four volumes could be used in an introductory course at the graduate or undergraduate level. Volumes 2 and 3 are most likely to be adopted in a risk management (RM) course which generally focus on threats, vulnerabilities, and consequences, while volume 4 will get picked up in courses on emergency management (EM).

This book was released on 2003-05-08 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The confluence of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack and the U.S. Army's historic role to support civil authorities has resulted in substantial new challenges for the Army. To help meet these challenges, the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research and Technology requested the National Research Council (NRC) carry out a series of studies on how science and technology could assist the Army prepare for its role in homeland security (HLS). The NRC's Board on Army Science and Technology formed the Committee on Army Science and Technology for Homeland Security to accomplish that assignment. The Committee was asked to review relevant literature and activities, determine areas of emphasis for Army S&T in support of counter terrorism and anti-terrorism, and recommend high-payoff technologies to help the Army fulfill its mission. The Department of Defense Counter-Terrorism Technology Task Force identified four operational areas in reviewing technical proposals for HLS operations: indications and warning; denial and survivability; recovery and consequence management; and attribution and retaliation. The study sponsor asked the Committee to use these four areas as the basis for its assessment of the science and technology (S&T) that will be important for the Army's HLS role. Overall, the Committee found that: There is potential for substantial synergy between S&T work carried out by the Army for its HLS responsibilities and the development of the next generation Army, the Objective Force. The Army National Guard (ARNG) is critical to the success of the Army's HLS efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What should businesses consider in preparing for terrorist attacks, natural disasters, pandemic illnesses and other emergencies? What steps can a business take to ensure continuity during and after a crisis? What can we learn from past success? This edited collection provides responses to these and other questions from prominent business executives and academics, drawn from their personal experiences with such crises as the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the Asian tsunami. Their analyses prove a major step forward in the emerging academic and professional field of homeland security. In this first volume, The Challenge of the New Age, the contributors– noted authorities in security and risk management, technology, public health, political science and business – look at specific ways disasters can impact businesses, both in the short and long term. They recount their experiences with terrorist attacks and natural disasters, and explore the potential impact of other hazards, such as a biological event or pandemic. Intended for business practitioners, real world operators, students and faculty, government leaders, and their libraries, the book demonstrates with historical examples the connectivity between threats, hazards, policies, jurisdictions, information, technology, leadership, and considerations of profit and loss. Those who want to benefit from best practices while avoiding mistakes of the past will find this an excellent place to start.

Book The New Era in U S National Security

Download or read book The New Era in U S National Security written by Jack A. Jarmon and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Era in U.S. National Security focuses on the emerging threats of the second decade of the twenty-first century, well after 9/11, and well into the age of globalization. It is a thorough, technically competent survey of the current arena of conflict and the competition for political and economic control by state and non-state actors. Starting with the current national security establishment, it discusses the incompatibility between the threats and the structure organized to meet them. It then looks at the supply chain, including containerization and maritime security as well as cybersecurity, terrorism, and transborder crime networks. The last section of the book focuses on existing industrial and defense policy and the role the private sector can play in national security. Pulling together different areas, such as the logistics of the supply chain, the crime-terrorist nexus, and cyberwarfare, the book describes the landscape of today’s new battlefields. It shows how the logistics of asymmetrical warfare, the rise of the information age, the decline of the importance and effectiveness of national borders, the overdependence on fragile infrastructures, and the global reach of virtual, paramilitary, criminal, and terrorist networks have created new frontlines and adversaries with diverse objectives. This core text for international security, strategy, war studies students is technical yet accessible to the non-specialist. It is a timely and comprehensive study of the realities of national security in the United States today.
