Book More Precious Than Gold

Download or read book More Precious Than Gold written by Dave Hollett and published by Associated University Presse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixteenth-century Conquistadors, led by Pizarro, came to Peru for three reasons--God, gold, and glory, but after the initial glory of their conquest they tended to concentrate on gold, rather than God. Direct colonial rule by Spain lasted for almost three hundred years, only ending in 1826, when the last Spanish flag was hauled down from the battlements of Real Felipe Fortress. However, just a few short years after Peru had declared its independence from Spain, the attention of some people in Lima began to focus on a potential source of untold wealth that was to prove more precious than gold. This was guano which, in its greatest concentration, was found on the diminutive Chincha Islands that lie just off the Peruvian coast, some seventy miles south of Callao. This book covers the story of this international guano trade. It outlines the fate of the unfortunates recruited to cut and load the guano. It also gives full details of the hardships endured by mariners employed in this trade. The story of those who grew rich on the proceeds of this trade is also outlined. Importantly, it explains just how the Peruvian government mismanaged the trade, to the extent that Peru became burdened with debts, rather than prospering on the proceeds of their vast new guano-based income.

Book Between Silver and Guano

Download or read book Between Silver and Guano written by Paul Eliot Gootenberg and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of Peru's transformation from a tottering colonial economy based on extraction of precious bullion to a massive exporter of bulk goods like guano shows how a struggle between protectionists and free traders shaped the state. "This is an elegant and sophisticated book that can be read on many levels, written by an author who never takes the facile road. [Its] significance is great--not just for Peruvian history but for theoretical questions relating to dependency and economic history in nineteenth-century Latin America... Gootenberg has added a major new element to the dependency debate, one that is more intellectually satisfying than the sterile old argument about good guys and bad guys."--Timothy E. Anna, The Hispanic American Historical Review "[One] of the best books in recent years on Peruvian history, and a valuable contribution to nineteenth-century commercial and financial studies."--Michael J. Gonzales, Journal of Economic History "Fascinating reading. Gootenberg has taken the why of Latin American underdevelopment a step forward by unraveling complexities of the actual historical-economic forces... [This book] is perhaps the most thorough examination of exactly how those internal class and productive forces contributed to Peru's under-development."--Choice Originally published in 1989. Book The Pacific Guano Company

Download or read book The Pacific Guano Company written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pacific Guano Company: Its History; Its Products and Trade; Its Relation to Agriculture; Exhausted Guano Islands of the Pacific Ocean: Howland's Islands, Chincha Islands, Etc;, Etc;; The Swan Islands; The Marl Beds and Phosphate Rock of South Carolina, Chisolm's Island Phosphat We invite attention to the following pages, which we trust will be found interesting to the general reader as well as to those actively engaged in the pursuit of agriculture. Few, perhaps, have contemplated the wonderful provisions of nature for maintaining cultivated soils in a state of fertility, or considered the disastrous results which would follow if the means provided for this end were unknown or neglected. The present generation of cultivators of the soils of the Atlantic States have inherited from their ancestors estates which have been under cultivation in many instances more than a century, during which period the steady removal of the elements of fertility from the soil would have resulted in utter barrenness had not modern science and discovery rendered available these gifts of nature for compensating the soil for the constant drain made upon its resources. By a wise use of these advantages the agriculturists of the present day can transmit to their successors through centuries to come estates unimpaired by continued cultivation. The following pages will show the reader what these wonderful provisions of nature are, and how science, art, and enterprise have rendered them available for the benefit of mankind. Besides the sketch of its business herein contained, the Directors of the Pacific Guano Company have decided to exhibit the workings and the value of its products on the Grounds of the Centennial Commission at Philadelphia, to which attention is respectfully called. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named one of the ten best books of the year by the Chicago Tribune A Publishers Weekly best book of 2019 | A 2019 NPR Staff Pick A pathbreaking history of the United States’ overseas possessions and the true meaning of its empire We are familiar with maps that outline all fifty states. And we are also familiar with the idea that the United States is an “empire,” exercising power around the world. But what about the actual territories—the islands, atolls, and archipelagos—this country has governed and inhabited? In How to Hide an Empire, Daniel Immerwahr tells the fascinating story of the United States outside the United States. In crackling, fast-paced prose, he reveals forgotten episodes that cast American history in a new light. We travel to the Guano Islands, where prospectors collected one of the nineteenth century’s most valuable commodities, and the Philippines, site of the most destructive event on U.S. soil. In Puerto Rico, Immerwahr shows how U.S. doctors conducted grisly experiments they would never have conducted on the mainland and charts the emergence of independence fighters who would shoot up the U.S. Congress. In the years after World War II, Immerwahr notes, the United States moved away from colonialism. Instead, it put innovations in electronics, transportation, and culture to use, devising a new sort of influence that did not require the control of colonies. Rich with absorbing vignettes, full of surprises, and driven by an original conception of what empire and globalization mean today, How to Hide an Empire is a major and compulsively readable work of history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Peruvian Guano: Its History, Composition and Fertilizing Qualities; With the Best Mode of Its Application to the Soil The Chincha islands, which contain the great Guano de posits, are situated in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Peru, at the distance of about twelve miles. They lie between Lat. And Lat. S.; a zone within which no rain falls, where the air is dry, and the sun shines with vehement power. The waters of the surrounding ocean contain innumerable shoals of fish; and myriads of birds, after daily satisfying their voracious appetites upon the finny tenants of the deep, have for ages made the islands their nightly abode, and the receptacle of their faecal offerings. From the arid nature of the climate, the excess. Of humidity has speedily evaporated from their ordure, de composition has been arrested, and by gradual accumulation from time immemorial, these extraordinary deposits have attained the depth, in many parts, of one hundred feet. Book excerpt: A sweeping history of tragic genius, cutting-edge science, and the Haber-Bosch discovery that changed billions of lives—including your own. At the dawn of the twentieth century, humanity was facing global disaster: Mass starvation was about to become a reality. A call went out to the world’ s scientists to find a solution. This is the story of the two men who found it: brilliant, self-important Fritz Haber and reclusive, alcoholic Carl Bosch. Together they discovered a way to make bread out of air, built city-sized factories, and saved millions of lives. But their epochal triumph came at a price we are still paying. The Haber-Bosch process was also used to make the gunpowder and explosives that killed millions during the two world wars. Both men were vilified during their lives; both, disillusioned and disgraced, died tragically. The Alchemy of Air is the extraordinary, previously untold story of a discovery that changed the way we grow food and the way we make war–and that promises to continue shaping our lives in fundamental and dramatic ways.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guano: A Treatise on the History, Economy as a Manure, and Modes of Applying Peruvian Guano, in the Culture of the Various Crops of the Farm and the Garden It is the object of this Treatise to give a few practical sug gestions on the use of guano, and the results of actual trials under a great variety of circumstances and upon a great variety of crops and soils. Before entering upon more practical points, however, it will not be out of place to say a few words of the origin and history of this article. It is but little more than twenty years since the first cargo of guano left the coast of Peru to enter the ports of Great Britain as an article of commerce. The first consignment was made to a mercantile firm of Liverpool, Messrs. Myers Co. In 1835, but guano, being still unknown, excited little attention till five years later when twenty casks were again landed in England, and it was soon found to be the most valuable manure in exis tence. 80 great was the confidence immediately inspired in its value as a means of increasing the products and renovating the soil of the country, that the very next year, 1841, seven vessels were employed to convey 1733 tons from the Chincha Islands to England, and the number increased in 1842 to 41 British and 3 foreign vessels, and to 13094 tons.
