Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 26 April 2008, 41-year-old Carole Loader embarked on an amazing journey; to run from Land’s End to John O’Groats on her own – a distance well in excess of 1,000 miles. Not having the luxury of company or aid from a support crew, she had to carry everything she required in a backpack. The ten-week journey pushed her mental and physical boundaries and took her along quiet country lanes, bridleways and long-distance footpaths. In the process she raised a substantial amount of money for charity (£6,000 for Cancer Research UK and £4,800 for The Paul Seal Trust Fund - raising money for a young man from Bournemouth, paralysed from the neck down in a surfing accident).Where Does That Footpath Lead? is her account of that incredible adventure. Based on the diary she kept at the time, it tells of the people she met and the sights and sounds she encountered along the way. The accompanying pictures provide a vivid illustration of the wonderful and diverse countryside of England and Scotland she travelled through.

Eleven-year-old Vime is struggling to come to terms with the demise of her beloved mother. She has a special place she frequents-a cobbled footpath near her house which leads to a forest. On the day of her mother's death anniversary, not wanting to return home, Vime follows the cobbled footpath all the way to the deep end of the woods and discovers that the trail leads to a magnificent tree. She falls asleep under it only to wake up and find that the footpath has disappeared. Tei, a forest spirit, helps her relocate the missing pathway. Vime is soon to discover that this tree is no ordinary tree. It is a portal between the human and spirit world, and Vime keeps finding her way back to it. Distressed that her father might remarry, she decides to leave her earthly life and join her mother in the spiritual world. As she travels to, from and through these realms, she understands what it is to embrace and survive grief, and what it means to surrender herself to these old spirits, not all of whom are good.

Download or read book Ersatz Manor written by Peter Brodowski and published by First Edition Design Pub.. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychosis stole into her mind like a demented thief, incorporating deviant ideas and cultivating a new personality to derail the original. Thoughts that others would have dismissed as bizarre started to take shape and grow roots. They started to make sense in one epiphany after another, forging new horizons, luring her further and further from the original course until she was so far astray that it seemed right and good. Natalie cried nearly nonstop for the first 24 hours after birth and for the first six months had difficulty sleeping, exhibited frequent bouts of trembling and twitching, and had difficulty gaining weight. Then after six months those symptoms disappeared, she grew like a weed and for all intense and purpose Natalie settled into a seemingly normal childhood. That is as normal as a preschooler can be who hears and converses with voices in her head. During the early school years, she delighted in capturing, torturing and ultimately killing animals. She had no difficulty with social interaction especially with boys and adults in authority or in carrying out daily life activities. Therefore, it is not clear when or where Natalie went insane. Whether it burst upon her suddenly one day like the big bang theory of the universe or crept upon her slowly and insidiously, bending her to its will, but insane she was. In high school she amused herself by murdering those that she took a dislike to and strangers for the sheer challenge and excitement she derived from killing. Her life was idyllic for the six years after high school, traveling the world, indulging in her favorite pastime as the mood struck. Until she received that e-mail from Ersatz Manor for the 10-year high school reunion. The return to home was the beginning of the end--in more ways than one.

Download or read book Where the Pavement Ends written by Erika Warmbrunn and published by The Mountaineers Books. This book was released on 2002-09-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the middle of the night I crawled out of my tent into a silvery vastness truly unchanged since Genghis Khan and his hordes loped west more than half a millennium ago. There was no glow of city lights on the horizon, no ranger station at the edge of the next valley, no quaint general store, no paved road. There was nothing but space, unbounded and untamed. A brilliant moon lit the blackness crystal clear. Moonshadows of every blade of grass danced silently in the wildness. It was the emptiest, quietest place I had ever been. I threw my arms out wide and spun slowly around and around in the dazzling clarity of the night, the stars blurring into ribbons of light above me." Mongolia. It was Erika Warmbrunn's dream. To escape deep into parts of Asia inaccessible to tours and guidebooks, to abandon herself to the risks of the unknown. And so, with only a bicycle named Greene for a traveling companion, she set off on an eight month, 8,000 kilometer trek that stretched across the steppes of this ancient land, on through China, and down the length of Vietnam. Freed by Greene's two wheels from the tyranny of discrete points on a map, she found that the true merit of travel was not in the simple seeing, but in flowing with the unexpected adventure or invitation, in savoring the moments in between -- the daily challenges of new words and customs, the tiny triumphs of learning a new way of life, the daunting thrill of never knowing what the next day would bring. Wanting to ride a Mongolian horse and finding herself in the saddle for four hours, herding fifty head of cattle. Asking for a hotel in a Chinese village and being taken into a family's home to share their grandmother's bed for the night. Pedaling into the Vietnamese highlands and being stopped along the muddy road by a father asking that she join his two-year-old son's birthday party. Accepting a Mongolian village's invitation to stop pedaling and stay for a while, to live with them and teach them English. In the doing and the telling, Where the Pavement Ends is a much richer experience than any line on a map can show. Where the Pavement Ends is the recipient of the "Barbara Savage Miles From Nowhere Memorial Award." You can find out more about this author at her website: www.wherethepavementends.com
