Book excerpt: So Where Did We Go Wrong? is titled as such because, in the last sixty years, I have witnessed the very values that many have grown up with and have tried to follow being abandoned in exchange for the pursuit of earthly possessions. Just as disheartening, walking over and ignoring the "little" people that might get in the way. The same can be said of the rest of society! Since it seems too many have left the church and have sacrificed their integrity, wishing to live only for the moment. Anyway, this book--and the others that follow, are my attempt to get them to right their wrongs and return to the desired pathway that will lead them Homeward.

Book excerpt: This novel, Children of Silicon, explores a slice of your far future. If you had to live and work in this age with robots how would you feel? There is no answer until a multitude of other questions are asked and answered, right? How safe and how intelligent they are come tome to mind immediately, among many others? However, if at this future time a decades long study had been completed called, The Model of the Human Mind', and if a conscious, electronic mind had been forged from their Human Brain Model, not a software driven computer mind, and packaged in a human-like frame, assuming it' was safe and of equal intelligence, would this help your comfort level? Would you feel more comfy' if you knew it had fully functional genitalia and a full range of emotional responses or would you rather it didn't have any of either? Would you care if it' vied for your girl/boyfriend or job, or loan, or home site? If so what hierarchy, limits and restrictions would you impose on this new human? Perhaps your future kin will opt to make them aids or slaves? Do you suppose some of these limits could affect negatively the desired result of building a compassionate human companion or might it' become too alien' for you to empathize with (i.e., just another mechanical robot a machine!)? If you have thought deeply about these questions you will realize the difficulty your' future generations will experience when they face the most sensational and transitional of all future events; the face off between the two human' minds, the organic biological human mind and the electronic silicon chip human mind. Read Children of Silicon and see if you agree that I've picked a most likely scenario for this precipitous event.

Book excerpt: Anna and Robert with their two sons Kevin and Andrew lived a peaceful and ideal suburban life in Virginia until Kevin, the older son met with an accident. Though it was not a physically disabling injury, during his hospitalization, Kevin was suspected as suffering from the beginnings of mental illness. Having a successful school and college life, being the artist and a musician, it shattered his self esteem and the family's peace for ever. Andrew, the younger brother who adored Kevin, had to grow up fast to be the emotional support for his parents and brother too. In spite of his own growing pains, Andrew turns out to be an asset for his parents. Robert, a popular and brilliant Neurosurgeon and Anna, an efficient, compassionate Intensive care unit nurse, face the anguish of dealing with the financial, emotional and social struggles with the diagnosis of Schizophrenia in Kevin, the apple of their eye. This book opens an avenue into the world of family ties, the unconditional and endless efforts of the parents to find a proper place for their first born who, for eighteen years gave them every pleasure as a"golden boy". The lack of financial and social support system makes such a family wonder "Where do we belong"? in this highly functioning, achievement oriented society. A part of the proceeds from this book is donated towards the support system for the families of the mentally ill.

Book Armies of the Young

Download or read book Armies of the Young written by David M. Rosen and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children have served as soldiers throughout history. They fought in the American Revolution, the Civil War, and in both world wars. They served as uniformed soldiers, camouflaged insurgents, and even suicide bombers. Indeed, the first U.S. soldier to be killed by hostile fire in the Afghanistan war was shot in ambush by a fourteen-year-old boy. Does this mean that child soldiers are aggressors? Or are they victims? It is a difficult question with no obvious answer, yet in recent years the acceptable answer among humanitarian organizations and contemporary scholars has been resoundingly the latter. These children are most often seen as especially hideous examples of adult criminal exploitation. In this provocative book, David M. Rosen argues that this response vastly oversimplifies the child soldier problem. Drawing on three dramatic examples-from Sierra Leone, Palestine, and Eastern Europe during the Holocaust-Rosen vividly illustrates this controversial view. In each case, he shows that children are not always passive victims, but often make the rational decision that not fighting is worse than fighting. With a critical eye to international law, Armies of the Young urges readers to reconsider the situation of child combatants in light of circumstance and history before adopting uninformed child protectionist views. In the process, Rosen paints a memorable and unsettling picture of the role of children in international conflicts.
