Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twin Lasserman boys grew up in mid-twentieth century middle America. As children they were as close as one would expect twin boys to be. But as adults their life paths took them to far different destinations, economically, socially and geographically. At a time when they were past middle-aged, a severely divided nation driven by polarizing political demagogues, stressed their moral foundations to the breaking point. What happens beyond the breaking point teaches them a great deal about themselves and each other and has a cataclysmic effect on the nation and the world. This is a must-read for any open-minded, intelligent individuals who want to explore a fictional world where moral norms are cast aside, racial biases are openly exploited, and society is allowed to deteriorate to an unforeseen nadir of base expression and survival mode behavior.

Book Coloniality Nationality Modernity

Download or read book Coloniality Nationality Modernity written by Epp Annus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soviet postcolonial studies is an emerging field of critical inquiry, with its locus of interest in colonial aspects of the Soviet experience in the USSR and beyond. The articles in this collection offer a postcolonial perspective on Baltic societies and cultures – that is, a perspective sensitive to the effects of Soviet colonialism. The colonial situation is typically sustained by the help of colonial discourses which carry the pathos of progress and civilization. In Soviet colonial discourse, the pathos of progress is presented in terms of communist value systems, which developed certain principles of the European Enlightenment and rearticulated them through Soviet ideology. This collection explores the establishment of Soviet colonial power structures, but also strategic continuities between Soviet and Tsarist rule and the legacy of Soviet colonialism in post-Soviet Baltics. Soviet norms and rules, imposed upon the Baltic borderlands, produced new forms of transculturation, gave birth to new cultural ‘authenticities,’ and developed complex entanglements of colonial, modern and national impulses. Analyses of colonial patterns in Soviet and post-Soviet Baltic societies helps bring us closer to understanding the Soviet legacy in the former Soviet borderlands and in present-day Russia. The chapters were originally published in a special issue of the Journal of Baltic Studies.

Book I Used to Be Charming

Download or read book I Used to Be Charming written by Eve Babitz and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previously uncollected nonfiction pieces by Hollywood's ultimate It Girl about everything from fashion to tango to Jim Morrison and Nicholas Cage. With Eve’s Hollywood Eve Babitz lit up the scene in 1974. The books that followed, among them Slow Days, Fast Company and Sex and Rage, have seduced generations of readers with their unfailing wit and impossible glamour. What is less well known is that Babitz was a working journalist for the better part of three decades, writing for the likes of Rolling Stone, Vogue, and Esquire, as well as for off-the-beaten-path periodicals like Wet: The Magazine of Gourmet Bathing and Francis Ford Coppola’s short-lived City. Whether profiling Hollywood darlings, getting to the bottom of health crazes like yoga and acupuncture, remembering friends and lovers from her days hobnobbing with rock stars at the Troubadour and art stars at the Ferus Gallery, or writing about her beloved, misunderstood hometown, Los Angeles, Babitz approaches every assignment with an energy and verve that is all her own. I Used to Be Charming gathers nearly fifty pieces written between 1975 and 1997, including the full text of Babitz’s wry book-length investigation into the pioneering lifestyle brand Fiorucci. The title essay, published here for the first time, recounts the accident that came close to killing her in 1996; it reveals an uncharacteristically vulnerable yet never less than utterly charming Babitz.
