Book excerpt: This book is comprised of photographic art and motivational psychically Inspired messages by psychic medium and artist Grace Divine "THE PSYCHIC ARTIST." The author states, "I created this book inspired by a question: Where are the angels in Los Angeles? A metaphor, an analogy, a simile, star struck people from all around the world come to Los Angeles to look for stars. But to be taken literally, where are they really, the angels? This book, being the artistic medium, proposes to arouse a sense of curiosity and perplexity in your mind. Ask yourself, what do you feel and what do you think when you see these photo paintings? Through this book, you will learn to see like a psychic artist as it shows you how to see what you hadn't seen before, more than just shadows of buildings reflected on the walls, maybe you, can find the angels in Los Angeles. One day, while traveling through Los Angeles, I took thousands of photos of the buildings from my moving vehicle. Differentiating between positive and negative spaces, I focused on the shadows as they are reflected from one building to another and on the spaces around them. In addition, I was haunted by the name of the city, "Los Angeles." I pondered at the irony of that name and its meaning. The rich history of Los Angeles as a city that caters to the entertainment industry is filled with stars and celebrities. But these stars stand on the shoulders of the many countless people who contribute to the production of television and film. In these photographs, I use the shadows on the buildings as a metaphor for this reality. My name is Grace Divine. I am a photographer, painter, artist, writer, attorney and psychic. I am "THE PSYCHIC ARTIST" and founder of The PSYCHIC ART MOVEMENT. This book is part of a series of books dedicated to THE PSYCHIC ART MOVEMENT. To learn more, please visit gracedivine.com.

The question in my mind as I was taking pictures was about Los Angeles as a huge city as well as a place for people to live. And then, there is the name of Los Angeles, which is a Spanish word meaning "The Angels." Also, as I was taking pictures my regular thoughts about what my eye can see or not also flooded my mind. For instance, what is in the shadows that I can't see. And so, as I took pictures these many thoughts came to mind. Overall, these images could be put on frames and hung to remind you of the buildings and shadows in downtown Los Angeles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the Western city at the end of the twentieth century look like? How did the modern metropolis of congestion and density turn into a posturban or even postsuburban cityscape? What are edge cities and technoburbs? How has the social composition of cities changed in the postwar era? What do gated communities tell us about social fragmentation? Is public space in the contemporary city being privatized and militarized? How can the urban self still be defined? What role does consumer aestheticism have to play in this? These and many more questions are addressed by this uniquely conceived multidisciplinary study. The Urban Condition seeks to interfere in current debates over the future and interpretation of our urban landscapes by reuniting studies of the city as a physical and material phenomenon and as a cultural and mental (arte)fact. The Ghent Urban Studies Team responsible for the writing and editing of this volume is directed by Kristiaan Versluys and Dirk De Meyer at the University of Ghent, Belgium. It is an interdisciplinary research team of young academics that further consists of Kristiaan Borret, Bart Eeckhout, Steven Jacobs, and Bart Keunen. The collective expertise of GUST ranges from architectural theory, urban planning, and art history to philosophy, literary criticism and cultural theory.

Patrick Ecclesine captures the city's dreams, dreamers, and, at times, nightmares using the most famous boulevard in the world as the setting for his photographs. Book excerpt: The classic work on the evaluation of city form. What does the city's form actually mean to the people who live there? What can the city planner do to make the city's image more vivid and memorable to the city dweller? To answer these questions, Mr. Lynch, supported by studies of Los Angeles, Boston, and Jersey City, formulates a new criterion—imageability—and shows its potential value as a guide for the building and rebuilding of cities. The wide scope of this study leads to an original and vital method for the evaluation of city form. The architect, the planner, and certainly the city dweller will all want to read this book.

Book excerpt: The only thing better than one boring building is hundreds of them. Far from the glamorous and avant-garde architectural features that make Los Angeles justifiably famous are the humble apartment buildings known as "dingbats." But Pretty Vacant dares to elevate the low-rise, the boxy, the not remarkably well-constructed to the architecturally sublime. In this inexpensive brick of a book, through scads of photographs of these underappreciated gems, their boundless surfacey charms are soon obvious. Combining funky textures, streamlined sconces, and future-retro ornamentation, these buildings practically define LA vernacular in their optimistic mix of mid-century modishness and darling details. Clive Piercy's photographs provide a streetside glimpse into the curious lives of these buildings, with charming names that range from the regal (Kings Studios) to the space-age (The Galaxie). Assembled in a compact but weighty package with more than 480 images, Pretty Vacant provides a snapshot tour and kitschy homage to this underdog architectural form.
