Download or read book Be with Me Always written by Randon Billings Noble and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Be with me always—take any form—drive me mad! only do not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you!” Thus does Heathcliff beg his dead Cathy in Wuthering Heights. He wants to be haunted—he insists on it. Randon Billings Noble does too. Instead of exorcising the ghosts of her past, she hopes for their cold hands to knock at the window and to linger. Be with Me Always is a collection of essays that explore hauntedness by considering how the ghosts of our pasts cling to us. In a way, all good essays are about the things that haunt us until we have somehow embraced or understood them. Here, Noble considers the ways she has been haunted—by a near-death experience, the gaze of a nude model, thoughts of widowhood, Anne Boleyn’s violent death, a book she can’t stop reading, a past lover who shadows her thoughts—in essays both pleasant and bitter, traditional and lyrical, and persistently evocative and unforgettable.

Download or read book Hos Hookers Call Girls and Rent Boys written by David Henry Sterry and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2009-07-07 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only thing the writers in this book have in common is that they've exchanged sex for money. They're PhDs and dropouts, soccer moms and jailbirds, $2,500-a-night call girls and $10 crack hos, and everything in between. This anthology lends a voice to an underrepresented population that is simultaneously reviled and worshipped. Hos, Hookers, Call Girls, and Rent Boys is a collection of short memoirs, rants, confessions, nightmares, journalism, and poetry covering life, love, work, family, and yes, sex. The editors gather pieces from the world of industrial sex, including contributions from art-porn priestess Dr. Annie Sprinkle, best-selling memoirist David Henry Sterry (Chicken: Self-Portrait of a Young Man for Rent), sex activist and musical diva Candye Kane, women and men right off the streets, girls participating in the first-ever National Summit of Commercially Sexually Exploited Youth, and Ruth Morgan Thomas, one of the organizers of the European Sex Work, Human Rights, and Migration Conference. Sex is a billion-dollar industry. Meet the real people who are its flesh and blood.
Download or read book REBOUND Redemption from Cancer Journey of Life written by SUBHASH SETHI and published by Clever Fox Publishing. This book was released on with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to inspire readers to know some facts surrounding cancer and face the adversities in life and win over them through practical life lessons that I have shared from my valuable learning and experiences. The book is primarily about my fight against cancer and recovery from it. In different chapters, I have tried to share my learning in this journey from detection to treatment and my personal experiences. I am a strong believer in destiny and one of the lessons I have learnt is that destiny only decides our direction and our destination. I, therefore, advise you to not fret and rue over the past or be worried about the uncertain future. Life is all about living in the present and enjoying the moment. This book also focuses on expressing gratitude and being thankful to family members and close friends who stand firmly with us through the ups and downs in our lives. It is also about enjoying the little gifts of life that bring happiness and positivity to our lives. With a positive mindset and strong self-belief, we can take on any adversity in life, even a lethal disease like cancer. The chapters in this book are meticulously written to provide insights into cancer cells in the human body and the prime reasons for its occurrence while recommending that we should follow healthy patterns in life to be safe from this lethal disorder. This book also talks about different aspects of human traits that need to be revisited during moments of solitude. This tough and painful journey starting from diagnosis to treatment helped me understand a lot about life and the different attributes attached to it. The book also tells us to purposefully slow down sometime to reflect on life and its numerous facets. It also shares valuable lessons and I definitely hope that it will be able to impact lives and bring hope and positivity to the readers.
Download or read book At Home in the Heart of Appalachia written by John O'Brien and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2002-09-17 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John O’Brien was raised in Philadelphia by an Appalachian father who fled the mountains to escape crippling poverty and family tragedy. Years later, with a wife and two kids of his own, the son moved back into those mountains in an attempt to understand both himself and the father from whom he’d become estranged. At once a poignant memoir and a tribute to America's most misunderstood region, At Home in the Heart of Appalachia describes a lush land of voluptuous summers, woodsmoke winters, and breathtaking autumns and springs. John O'Brien sees through the myths about Appalachia to its people and the mountain culture that has sustained them. And he takes to task naïve missionaries and rapacious industrialists who are the real source of much of the region's woe as well as its lingering hillbilly stereotypes. Finally, and profoundly, he comes to terms with the atavistic demons that haunt the relations between Appalachian fathers and sons.

Download or read book Identity and Pragmatic Language Use written by Yoko Nogami and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-06-22 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ELF (English as a lingua franca) research counters the monocentric view of English based on norms of native speakers of English, and supports any usages reflecting sociopragmatic and pragmalinguistic reality of ELF communication. Such an approach empowers any speakers of English to contemplate their own varieties of English as legitimate, providing them greater options for positive self-identification. Based on qualitative and interpretive methodology, this book illustrates how Japanese L2 English users establish identities related to L2 English as part of their multiple identities, and how they explore new identity options through ELF. Moreover, the author demonstrates how power relations relating to English language are constructed through the participants’ experiences in ELF interactions. Also, analysis of the data reveals that to what degree the Japanese L2 English users wish to affiliate with particular groups in ELF interactions with people from diverse cultural background. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of the study, this book will appeal to a broad audience such as scholars and students who are interested in further understanding of identity and sociocultural issues involved in intercultural communication.

But when Juan Ruiz proposes and promises to take her to New York City, she has to say yes. It doesn’t matter that he is twice her age, that there is no love between them. Their marriage is an opportunity for her entire close-knit family to eventually immigrate. So on New Year’s Day, 1965, Ana leaves behind everything she knows and becomes Ana Ruiz, a wife confined to a cold six-floor walk-up in Washington Heights. Lonely and miserable, Ana hatches a reckless plan to escape. But at the bus terminal, she is stopped by Cesar, Juan’s free-spirited younger brother, who convinces her to stay. As the Dominican Republic slides into political turmoil, Juan returns to protect his family’s assets, leaving Cesar to take care of Ana. Suddenly, Ana is free to take English lessons at a local church, lie on the beach at Coney Island, see a movie at Radio City Music Hall, go dancing with Cesar, and imagine the possibility of a different kind of life in America. When Juan returns, Ana must decide once again between her heart and her duty to her family. In bright, musical prose that reflects the energy of New York City, Angie Cruz's Dominicana is a vital portrait of the immigrant experience and the timeless coming-of-age story of a young woman finding her voice in the world.
