Book excerpt: When Sharon Hanley Disher entered the U.S. Naval Academy with eighty other young women in 1976, she helped end a 131-year all-male tradition at Annapolis. Her entertaining and shocking account of the women's four-year effort to join the academy's elite fraternity and become commissioned naval officers is a valuable chronicle of the times, and her insights have been credited with helping us understand the challenges of integrating women into the military services. From the punishing crucible of plebe summer to the triumph of graduation, she describes their search for ways to survive the mental and physical hurdles they had to overcome. Unflinchingly frank, she freely discusses the prejudice and abuse they encountered that often went unpunished or unreported. A loyal Navy supporter, nevertheless, Disher provides a balanced account of life behind the academy's storied walls for that first group of teenaged women who charted the way for future female midshipmen. Lively, well researched, and amazingly good humored, the book seems as fresh today as it was when first published in hardcover in 1998.

Book A First Class Temperament

Download or read book A First Class Temperament written by Geoffrey C. Ward and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 946 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this classic of American biography, based upon thousands of original documents, many never previously published, the prize-winning historian Geoffrey C. Ward tells the dramatic story of Franklin Roosevelt’s unlikely rise from cloistered youth to the brink of the presidency with a richness of detail and vivid sense of time, place, and personality usually found only in fiction. In these pages, FDR comes alive as a fond but absent father and an often unfeeling husband--the story of Eleanor Roosevelt’s struggle to build a life independent of him is chronicled in full–as well as a charming but pampered patrician trying to find his way in the sweaty world of everyday politics and all-too willing willing to abandon allies and jettison principle if he thinks it will help him move up the political ladder. But somehow he also finds within himself the courage and resourcefulness to come back from a paralysis that would have crushed a less resilient man and then go on to meet and master the two gravest crises of his time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite what Jo Ann Fuson Staples might tell you, she is no ordinary woman. She has led a remarkable life, full of adventure, love, hardship, and survival. Raised in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky, she comes from a long line of strong mountain folk, those ready to take on adversity and fight for anyone they love, no matter the odds. At only seven, Jo Ann tragically lost her father, and then, when Jo Ann was twenty-four, her mother to brutal violence. Although the pain from those experiences followed Jo Ann for the rest of her life, the bonds she made with her friends and family members only grew stronger, and from there, Jo Ann dove head-first into life. From having a relationship with the prime suspect of the infamous D. B. Cooper skyjacker case to taking on a twenty-six-year journey with her husband on diplomatic assignments to Central and South America, Africa, and the Middle East to surviving a grizzly bear attack, Jo Ann shares it all with humour, grace, and, occasionally, sorrow. Paths I Have Walked is a story of trauma, heartbreak, compassion, true friendship, finding love, and the gift of motherhood. It is a deeply human, compelling, and poignant self-portrait of a resilient woman ready to face life, no matter the odds.

Book With Love From Malaysia

Download or read book With Love From Malaysia written by M. Bakri Musa and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-04-01 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Love, From Malaysia is an intimate look at Malaysia in the 1970s, through a series of letters home by a young Canadian mother. With two toddlers and her Malaysian surgeon husband, she adjusts to life in a new country and strange culture. Karen E. Musa chronicles the challenges of tolerating a stifling bureaucracy and accommodating "how they do things differently." With Love, From Malaysia narrates the young family's rich and varied experiences, from their royal audience with the Sultan of Johore to visits to the kampong. For Karen Musa, the warmth of her husband's large extended family considerably eased her culture shock of "enjoying" the "luxury" of household maids, her continuing "saga of the telephone," and other tribulations in dealing with Third World officialdom. The family's adventures in the mundane chores of daily living, which the natives take in stride, make for entertaining reading. This is the Malaysia that natives and foreigners alike rarely experience or appreciate.
