Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it take to be a student-athlete at Notre Dame? Sports fans may have an idea of what it takes to play football at a Division I college: the training, the discipline, the pain, the motivation. But most of us have no idea what it takes to be a successful student-athlete at a top academic institution such as Notre Dame. In “The Men We Became: More Echoes From the End Zone,” the follow up to Lisa Kelly’s first book “Echoes From the End Zone: The Men We Became;” Lisa details what it takes to be a successful student-athlete at Notre Dame: the dedication, determination and drive that Our Lady’s student-athletes need to find success both on and off the field. She tells the stories of another group of Notre Dame football players including: • The lessons they learned in college, and how those lessons changed their lives via the Notre Dame Value Stream • Their years at Notre Dame • The end of their football careers • The new careers and dreams they followed after football "The profiles of the Notre Dame men presented in this book touch on the significant impact the University played in the shaping of these individuals after they left . Lisa does a masterful job of extracting the essence of what make Notre Dame men special. I am proud of the legacy I was fortunate enough to be a part of and grateful to Lisa for doing such a remarkable job in telling our stories.” ~Reggie Brooks “The men featured in this book are special individuals and represent all that is great about Notre Dame. These men are significant and they have strived each day to make an impact and difference in all things that they touch. They were - and as far as I’m concerned remain - Notre Dame student-athletes and I’m proud to have been a part of their lives. Lisa, thank you for your work and sharing with the Notre Dame Family what you so appropriately have named, “The Men We Became: More Echoes From the End Zone.” ~ Lou Holtz

They had formed a bond that was rare for people that lived in separate households and were not blood related. Los’s family ties to a dangerous organization in California connected the three friends to the streets where they eventually formed their own organization. The Black Border Brothers was formed, and Amir and Los maneuvered drugs, weapons, and currency through the dregs of the streets in Kansas and Missouri. With success comes jealousy, deceit, and hatred. Their organization began colliding with others, and they were forced to defend what they had built at all costs. The M.O.P. was a major factor in Kansas City, the Italians were the Black Border Brothers gateway to receiving their drugs, and the Jamaicans were funding their foes with loads of currency. These three organizations were a constant threat to their survival. Through all of this, the three friends struggled with their relationships and attempted to balance their personal lives with the murder and mayhem that the Black Border Brothers were causing in the streets. They also struggled with remaining friends through their fears, dreams, and adversities. Amir and Los were two males with conflicting personalities, and it was difficult to remember the blood pact they had forged as children when money, sex, and murder was a constant distraction in Kansas City- the dangerous place that they called home.

Download or read book A Game of Chance written by Andrea Kirkpatrick and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s almost impossible to imagine spending eight months at sea “without once putting foot on land.” But that’s exactly what whalers experienced when playing the dangerous “game of chance,” hunting down leviathans for oil and bone—all for a “lay,” or share, of the vessel’s spoils. A Game of Chance is the first comprehensive, in-depth study of British North American South Seas whaling. Author Andrea Kirkpatrick takes readers on a series of fascinating and sometimes fantastical journeys as she chronicles in great detail the story of a largely forgotten industry that operated out of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick ports from the 1760s to 1850. Kirkpatrick plumbed the depths of myriad logbooks and journals to piece together the often-murky tales of an astonishing number of ships. In this treatise covering a century of whaling, she shares details such as ownership, tonnage, voyages, captains’ pedigrees, and names of crewmen, including nascent whaler Herman Melville, author of Moby-Dick. Hoping for “greasy luck,” the men who manned these ships found both camaraderie and competition as they hunted the world’s whaling grounds from Cape Horn to Kamchatka, many circumnavigating the globe during their careers. They battled squalls and high seas, scurvy and venereal disease, heartbreak and homesickness—and sometimes each other. Many never returned home, their bodies committed to the deep or buried on foreign land. Written in two parts—landward and seaward—Kirkpatrick’s clear prose and adoption of whaling lingua franca brings this high-risk venture to the fore with authenticity, newly revealed facts, and remarkable stories of adventure.
