Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title to this interdisciplinary collection draws on the Yupik Eskimo belief that seals, fish, and other game are precious gifts that, when treated with respect and care, will return to be hunted again. Just so, if oral traditions are told faithfully and respectfully, they will return to benefit future generations. The contributors to this volume are concerned with the interpretation and representation of oral narrative and how it is shaped by its audience and the time, place, and cultural context of the narration. Thus, oral traditions are understood as a series of dialogues between tradition bearers and their listeners, including those who record, write, and interpret.

Book excerpt: If prayer has ever felt frustrating, complicated, laborious or even useless to you, this book has the potential to give you a fresh perspective on the heart of prayer. The author shares her experience of crying out, Lord, teach me to pray! and the Holy Spirits response to her cries. Included are six lessons about the principles of prayer and the authors gained insight into why prayer is a necessity; the very heartbeat of a believer. These insights can move you into a place of simplicity and rest in prayer and reveal that prayer is not something you do, but rather someone you become; a pray-er.

Book Hunting Tradition in a Changing World

Download or read book Hunting Tradition in a Changing World written by Ann Fienup-Riordan and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yupiit in southwestern Alaska are members of the larger family of Inuit cultures. Including more than 20,000 individuals in seventy villages, the Yupiit continue to engage in traditional hunting activities, carefully following the seasonal shifts in the environment they know so well. During the twentieth century, especially after the construction of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline, the Yup'ik people witnessed and experienced explosive cultural changes. Anthropologist Ann Fienup-Riordan explores how these subarctic hunters engage in a "hunt" for history, to make connections within their own communities and between them and the larger world. She turns to the Yupiit themselves, joining her essays with eloquent narratives by individual Yupiit, which illuminate their hunting traditions in their own words. To highlight the ongoing process of cultural negotiation, Fienup-Riordan provides vivid examples: How the Yupiit use metaphor to teach both themselves and others about their past and present lives; how they maintain their cultural identity, even while moving away from native villages; and how they worked with museums in the "Lower 48" on an exhibition of Yup'ik ceremonial masks. Ann Fienup-Riordan has published many books on Yup'ik history and oral tradition, including Eskimo Essays: Yup'ik Lives and How We See Them, The Living Tradition of Yup'ik Masks and Boundaries and Passages. She has lived with and written about the Yupiit for twenty-five years.

Book The SAGE Handbook of Interview Research

Download or read book The SAGE Handbook of Interview Research written by Jaber F. Gubrium and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of this landmark volume emphasizes the dynamic, interactional, and reflexive dimensions of the research interview. Contributors highlight the myriad dimensions of complexity that are emerging as researchers increasingly frame the interview as a communicative opportunity as much as a data-gathering format. The book begins with the history and conceptual transformations of the interview, which is followed by chapters that discuss the main components of interview practice. Taken together, the contributions to The SAGE Handbook of Interview Research: The Complexity of the Craft encourage readers simultaneously to learn the frameworks and technologies of interviewing and to reflect on the epistemological foundations of the interview craft.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In discussing a wide array of legal, biological, and sociocultural definitions, Eva Garroutte documents how these have frequently been manipulated by the federal government, by tribal officials, and by Indian and non-Indian individuals to gain political, social, or economic advantage. Whether or not one agrees with her solutions, anyone seriously concerned with contemporary American Indian issues should read this book."—Garrick Bailey, editor of The Osage and the Invisible World "Real Indians is a remarkably candid, engaging, and compelling book. It tells the important and often controversial story of how 'Indian-ness' is negotiated in American culture by indigenous peoples, policy makers, and scholars."—Robert Wuthnow, author of Creative Spirituality "Eva Marie Garroutte has done an exemplary job of combining scholarly sources, personal accounts, interview data, and self-reflection to catalog and examine the ways in which individual and collective identities are asserted, negotiated, and revitalized. She invites readers to imagine an intellectual space where scholarly and traditional ways of knowing and telling come face to face in an epistemological landscape where the ‘traditions’ of social science and 'radical indigenism' can confront one another in constructive dialogue."—Joane Nagel, author of Race, Ethnicity, and Sexuality

Book You Are God

  • Author : Merrilyn Richardson
  • Publisher : Hillcrest Publishing Group
  • Release : 2012-12-04
  • ISBN : 1938690338
  • Pages : 339 pages

Download or read book You Are God written by Merrilyn Richardson and published by Hillcrest Publishing Group. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So writes Merrliyn Richardson in You Are God: The Challenge to Achieve Christ Consciousness in the Modern Era. Richardson States that her viewpoint is "based on the values of the founders of our Republic." The founders, she notes, established our ideals of-individual freedom but gave final authority to the people who put their trust in God. In You Are God, she adroitly weaves, together secular and Spiritual subjects to help readers come to an "expanded understanding of current circumstances." She tackles the major challenges our nation currently faces, along with their causes and consequences, and then offers principled solutions. Before addressing the weighty topic of our nation's "current crisis of indebtedness," however, she begins, quite logically, at the beginning-who we are and from whence we came. We are "spiritual beings having a human experience, filled with intelligence of the highest order, or God." But we also have free will- "one of mankind's first gifts from the Creator"- and so she addresses the causes of our not living up to the "ideal of perfection." Book jacket.

Book Incarnate in Word and Song

Download or read book Incarnate in Word and Song written by Orin E. Johnson and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2023-03-17 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing,” Jesus says at the beginning of his public ministry. The work of the divine is made present to those listeners in God’s Word Made Flesh. Still today, this sort of encounter with Christ must be paramount in all activities of the church: liturgy, evangelization, catechesis, and conversion. By bringing music into dialogue with preaching and living the Word in our daily lives, we learn how we can better recognize Christ around us and help make his presence, his truth, and his love more tangible to all those who hear our voice and observe our acts of loving kindness.
