Book Psychoanalysis as a Spiritual Discipline

Download or read book Psychoanalysis as a Spiritual Discipline written by Paul Marcus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great existential psychiatrist Ludwig Binswanger famously pointed out to Freud that therapeutic failure could "only be understood as the result of something which could be called a deficiency of spirit." Binswanger was surprised when Freud agreed, asserting, "Yes, spirit is everything." However, spirit and the spiritual realm have largely been dropped from mainstream psychoanalytic theory and practice. This book seeks to help revitalize a culturally aging psychoanalysis that is in conceptual and clinical disarray in the marketplace of ideas and is viewed as a "theory in crisis" no longer regarded as the primary therapy for those who are suffering. The author argues that psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy can be reinvigorated as a discipline if it is animated by the powerfully evocative spiritual, moral, and ethical insights of two dialogical personalist religious philosophers—Martin Buber, a Jew, and Gabriel Marcel, a Catholic—who both initiated a "Copernican revolution" in human thought. In chapters that focus on love, work, faith, suffering, and clinical practice, Paul Marcus shows how the spiritual optic of Buber and Marcel can help revive and refresh psychoanalysis, and bring it back into the light by communicating its inherent vitality, power, and relevance to the mental health community and to those who seek psychoanalytic treatment.

Book Ask Me for a Blessing You Know You Need One

Download or read book Ask Me for a Blessing You Know You Need One written by Adrian Dannhauser and published by Broadleaf Books. This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a blessing? Do you have to believe to receive one? Can you doubt while you pray? And can you extend grace to others while still desperately in need of it yourself? Once a week Episcopal priest Adrian Dannhauser stands outside her Manhattan church beside a chalkboard sign that reads "Ask me for a blessing (because God knows you need one)." Passersby stop, chat, and ask for prayer: for a sick friend, an addicted son, an upcoming job interview, the state of our nation, or the grief of our world. Bus drivers sometimes open their doors for a quick prayer before the light turns green, and someone once took her to meet their doorman so she could bless him too. Half of those who stop are in crisis. Someone always cries. A few are simply curious. Through the heartfelt, frank, and sincere stories of her unique ministry, Dannhauser offers glimpses into the tender, holy, and sometimes hilarious moments of sidewalk prayers. With a potent blend of reverence and irreverence, as well as insights from Christian scriptures, she delves into the power that ancient ideas--blessing, forgiveness, miracles, and prayer--hold in a disenchanted world. For people of Christian faith, other faiths, or no faith at all, having spiritual conversations, even awkward ones with strangers on the street, can help us face our vulnerability, where we may discover a grace sufficient for all.

Book Psychoanalysis and Wisdom

Download or read book Psychoanalysis and Wisdom written by Paul Marcus and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychoanalysis and Wisdom applies psychoanalytic insights into one of the great examples of wisdom literature, the Ethics of the Fathers, an ethical tractate of the Talmud. Paul Marcus quotes key passages from the Ethics of the Fathers, providing a psychoanalytic commentary to enlarge and deepen our understanding of its contents, focusing primarily on what constitutes a flourishing life. Marcus then considers what psychoanalysis can provide in its engagement with this classic of the wisdom teachings, such as illuminating aspects of the Ethics that are overlooked or underappreciated, and how “pearls of wisdom” from the Ethics can be incorporated into psychoanalytic theory and practice. The book contains clinical material as well as the insights of philosophers like Martin Buber, Gabriel Marcel and Emmanuel Levinas. Psychoanalysis and Wisdom will appeal to readers interested in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy and to academics and students of psychoanalytic studies, religious studies, Judaic studies and philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My view: This manuscript (soon-to-be-published book), I'm sure is truly a love story. It is spiritual, romantic, serious, instructional, and informative; and throughout the book reads like a love letter to God and to the author's husband-to-be, and now husband, Kelma. There were a couple or more statements in the manuscript (journal entries) that really made me chuckle. I read those about three times because I enjoyed the lightheartedness of the author, as well as my own hearty laughter, which felt very good. I'm pretty certain that this will have the same effect on other readers, as well. My sincerest thanks to the author for asking me to be among the first persons to read her manuscript. I am indeed honored. There's a subtle hint that this manuscript, once published, may be the first in a series of inspirational books, packed with love and appreciation for God, her husband, her family, and others. --Perlene P. Montgomery This is my personal account of the author's relationship with God, her spouse, and her ministry. Through the pages of her revealing inspirational book, Mrs. Gloria Howell-Mason presents a unique acknowledgment of God's purpose, mission, and vision for her life. In this literary record, she declares her determination to trust Jesus as she joyfully seeks to please Him daily and to inspire others to grow deeper in the love and higher in the spirit of Jesus- --Audrey L. Byrd I am so honored to have been asked to read this wonderful book. What a delightful, caring, funny story. Follow Elder Gloria Mason on her journey through love loss and love again, a greater love than she would have ever known--love for God, love for family, love for the one that God has for her, as well as love for the plan he is revealing to her. It is a beautiful reminder that if we wait on the Lord, he will make all things new and exciting. --Prophetess Joyce Washington I thought the book was magnificent. It's a blessing to me to have lived long enough to find out how talented my daughter is and to read a book that she wrote. A. Louise Williams, Author's Mother (Member of Missionary Guild, and Church Mother) Her compassion for the love of God and the man God sent her to lean on for her to be able to freely work in his kingdom here on earth. She expresses her intimate relationship with recognizing order in her life and why first things should be first to get it right. --Dr. Barbara Privo P. Wiggins, PhD
