Book excerpt: In a country where the maternal mortality rate is 221 per 100,000 live births and the infant mortality rate is 23.20 per 1,000 live births, Hilary, at the age of 22, founded Glory Reborn, a non-profit organization that provides high-quality maternal and newborn care to the poorest of the poor. It seems unimaginable that someone so young would travel 8,000 miles from the comforts of her home in Texas to the Philippines to live in a suburban slum and take on the task of incorporating an organization. But her passion for serving others and bringing the hope of Jesus to the nations inspires a vision like none other. Ten years and 3,000 babies later, Glory Reborn continues to provide compassionate and holistic care to the marginalized of Cebu. Operating on the financial support of donors alone, this free clinic offers prenatal care, labor and delivery services, postpartum exams, newborn care, and feeding programs. Ultimately, the clinic offers a place to bring little ones safely into the world with compassion and dignity, providing a hope and a future to a nation. When Glory's Born invites readers to join in on the journey of bringing hope and displaying God's glory to the nations.

Book In All His Glory

Download or read book In All His Glory written by Sally Bedell Smith and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-02-29 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “He is to American broadcasting as Carnegie was to steel, Ford to automobiles, Luce to publishing, and Ruth to baseball,” wrote The New York Times of William S. Paley—the man who built CBS, the “Tiffany Network.” Sally Bedell Smith’s In All His Glory takes a hard look at Paley and the perfect world he created for himself, revealing the extraordinary complexity of the man who let nothing get in the way of his vast ambitions. Tracing his life from Chicago, where Paley was born to a family of cigar makers, to the glamorous haunts of Manhattan, Smith shows us the shrewd, demanding egoist, the hedonist pursuing every form of pleasure, the corporate strongman famous for his energy and ruthlessness. Drawing on highly placed CBS sources and hundreds of interviews, and with a supporting cast of such glittering figures as Truman Capote, Slim Keith, Jock Whitney, Ted Turner, David Sarnoff, Brooke Astor and a parade of Paley’s humiliated heirs, In All His Glory is a richly textured story of business, power and social ambition. Praise for In All His Glory “A sweeping study of the emergence of broadcasting, the American immigrant experience, and the ravenous personal and professional tastes of Paley as he charmed and clawed his way to the top of society.”—Los Angeles Times “Riveting…packed with revelations, rich in radio and TV lore, sprinkled with intrigues, glitz, and wheeling and dealing at the highest levels of media and government.”—Publishers Weekly “An impressive, meticulously researched work of broadcast history as well as a piquant glimpse inside CBS’s corporate culture.”—Time

Book Birth Advantages and Relative Age Effects in Sport

Download or read book Birth Advantages and Relative Age Effects in Sport written by Adam L. Kelly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-03 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relative age effects (RAEs) refer to the participation, selection, and attainment inequalities in the immediate, short-term, and long-term in sports. Indeed, dozens of studies have identified RAEs across male and female sporting contexts. Despite its widespread prevalence, there is a paucity in the empirical research and practical application of strategies specifically designed to moderate RAEs. Thus, the purpose of this book is to situate RAEs in the context of youth sport structures, lay foundational knowledge concerning the mechanisms that underpin RAEs, and offer alternative group banding strategies aimed at moderating RAEs. In order to enhance our knowledge on birth advantages and RAEs to create more appropriate settings, key stakeholders, such as coaches, practitioners, administrators, policy makers, and researchers, are required to understand the possible influence of and interaction between birthplace, engagement in activities, ethnicity, genetic profile, parents, socioeconomic status, and relative age. Thus, in addition to RAEs and alternative group banding strategies, Birth Advantages and Relative Age Effects in Sport also examines the role of additional birth advantages and socio-environmental factors that young athletes may experience in organized youth sport. Drawing from both empirical research and practical examples, this book comprises three parts: (a) organizational structures, (b) group banding strategies, and (c) socio-environmental factors. Overall, this book broadens our understanding of the methodological, contextual, and practical considerations within organizational structures in sport to create more appropriate settings, and strive to make positive, impactful change to lived youth sport experiences. This book will be of vital reading to academics, researchers, and key stakeholders of sports coaching, athlete development, and youth sport, as well as other related disciplines.
