You don't go and fall out of your arse in love with him. I knew better, and I should have listened, and perhaps I would have, had I known what it would have ultimately cost me. The promise I made to my best friend, along with my friendship of two decades went straight to hell and burnt to cinders after I got a taste of Dean and all his wickedness. I tried to fight it, I really did, but the harder I tried to fight off my feelings, the more I craved him, and the toxicity between us became...addictive. And then, fate threw another curveball at us when I found out I was pregnant, and we both agreed to come clean about our relationship and make it work for our baby. Dean and I were ready to stand against Ashlyn, both our families and every other hindrance that stood in our way and fight for one another because we imprudently believed we were cosmically linked. Fated by the heavens. Standing against family is one thing, but how do you fight against a twisted fate that is actively and persistently trying to keep you apart? The answer... You don't.

Book The Betrayal of Faith

  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2007-10-31

  • Pages : 319 pages

Download or read book The Betrayal of Faith written by Emma Anderson and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emma Anderson uses one man's compelling story to explore the collision of Christianity with traditional Native religion in colonial North America. Pierre-Anthoine Pastedechouan was born into a nomadic indigenous community of Innu living along the St. Lawrence River in present-day Quebec. At age eleven, he was sent to France by Catholic missionaries to be educated for five years, and then brought back to help Christianize his people. Pastedechouan's youthful encounter with French Catholicism engendered in him a fatal religious ambivalence. Robbed of both his traditional religious identity and critical survival skills, he had difficulty winning the acceptance of his community upon his return. At the same time, his attempts to prove himself to his people led the Jesuits to regard him with increasing suspicion. Suspended between two worlds, Pastedechouan ultimately became estranged--with tragic results--from both his native community and his missionary mentors. An engaging narrative of cultural negotiation and religious coercion, Betrayal of Faith documents the multiple betrayals of identity and culture caused by one young man's experiences with an inflexible French Catholicism. Pastedechouan's story illuminates key struggles to retain and impose religious identity on both sides of the seventeenth-century Atlantic, even as it has a startling relevance to the contemporary encounter between native and non-native peoples.

But the hardest road he walked was the crossroads in Golden, B.C., where he had a brush with the devil that changed his life and his spiritual journey forever. An aspiring musician in Vancouver in the 1990s, Jake loved hitchhiking and writing songs about his travels as a means of documenting events in his life. But when a hitchhiking trip went wrong, he soon found himself in the midst of a complete psychotic break, believing that God was speaking to him and that it was his destiny to save the world. He ended up in a psych ward, where he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Through his faith in God and his willingness to reach out for help, Jake recovered, but recovery was its own long and difficult road. A profound and touching selection of song lyrics and poems from across the lifetime of a musician and traveller, The Golden Crossroads encompasses joy and pain, beauty and terror, love and despair. It is a story of hope, and the triumph of faith in times of darkness.

Book When Ways of Life Collide

Download or read book When Ways of Life Collide written by Paul M. Sniderman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-02 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004, Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh was brutally murdered on a busy Amsterdam street. His killer was Mohammed Bouyeri, a twenty-six-year-old Dutch Moroccan offended by van Gogh's controversial film about Muslim suppression of women. The Dutch government had funded separate schools, housing projects, broadcast media, and community organizations for Muslim immigrants, all under the umbrella of multiculturalism. But the reality of terrorism and radicalization of Muslim immigrants has shattered that dream. In this arresting book, Paul Sniderman and Louk Hagendoorn demonstrate that there are deep conflicts of values in the Netherlands. In the eyes of the Dutch, for example, Muslims oppress women, treating them as inferior to men. In the eyes of Muslim immigrants, Western Europeans deny women the respect they deserve. Western Europe has become a cultural conflict zone. Two ways of life are colliding. Sniderman and Hagendoorn show how identity politics contributed to this crisis. The very policies meant to persuade majority and minority that they are part of the same society strengthened their view that they belong to different societies. At the deepest level, the authors' findings suggest, the issue that government and citizens need to be concerned about is not a conflict of values but a clash of fundamental loyalties.

Book Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion

Download or read book Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion written by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and published by Newcomb Livraria Press. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new 2023 Translation with Afterword of Hegel's Monumental work Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion (1821-1831) Over a ten-year span, G.W.F. Hegel's "Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion" probed the relationship between philosophy and religious thought. Hegel asserts that religion and philosophy both aim to express the Absolute, though religion does so in a pictorial and representational manner, while philosophy does so conceptually. Analyzing various world religions, Hegel underscores Christianity's centrality, viewing it as the highest religious expression of Spirit's self-revelation. The lectures, rich in insights and interpretations, bridge the gap between religious faith and speculative thought.

Book God s Crucible Islam and the Making of Europe 570 1215

Download or read book God s Crucible Islam and the Making of Europe 570 1215 written by David Levering Lewis and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2009-01-12 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the two-time Pulitzer Prize–winning author, God’s Crucible brings to life “a furiously complex age” (New York Times Book Review). Resonating as profoundly today as when it was first published to widespread critical acclaim a decade ago, God’s Crucible is a bold portrait of Islamic Spain and the birth of modern Europe from one of our greatest historians. David Levering Lewis’s narrative, filled with accounts of some of the most epic battles in world history, reveals how cosmopolitan, Muslim al-Andalus flourished—a beacon of cooperation and tolerance—while proto-Europe floundered in opposition to Islam, making virtues out of hereditary aristocracy, religious intolerance, perpetual war, and slavery. This masterful history begins with the fall of the Persian and Roman empires, followed by the rise of the prophet Muhammad and five centuries of engagement between the Muslim imperium and an emerging Europe. Essential and urgent, God’s Crucible underscores the importance of these early, world-altering events whose influence remains as current as today’s headlines.
