Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interactions between societies are among the most powerful forces in human history. However, because they are difficult to reconstruct from archaeological data, they have often been overlooked and understudied by archaeologists. This is particularly true for hunter-gatherer societies, which are frequently seen as adapting to local conditions rather than developing in the context of large-scale networks. When Worlds Collide presents a new model for discerning interaction networks based on the archaeological record, and then applies the model to long-term change in an Arctic society. Max Friesen has adapted and expanded world-system theory in order to develop a model that explains how hunter-gatherer interaction networks, or world-systems, are structured—and why they change. He has utilized this model to better understand the development of Inuvialuit society in the western Canadian Arctic over a 500-year span, from the pre-contact period to the early twentieth century. As Friesen combines local archaeological data with more extensive ethnographic and archaeological evidence from the surrounding region, a picture emerges of a dynamic Inuvialuit world-system characterized by bounded territories, trade, warfare, and other forms of interaction. This world-system gradually intensified as the impacts of Euroamerican colonial activities increased. This intensification, Friesen suggests, was based on pre-existing Inuvialuit social and economic structures rather than on patterns imposed from outside. Ultimately, this intense interacting network collapsed near the end of the nineteenth century. When Worlds Collide offers a new way to comprehend small-scale world-systems from the point of view of indigenous people. Its approach will prove valuable for understanding hunter-gatherer societies around the globe.

Book excerpt: When Worlds Collide is an erotic supernatural thriller in which Gabriel Michaels is a best-selling author who has lived alone in his large three-story house near Port Angeles, Washington ever since his ex-wife nearly kills him in a fit of rage a dozen years ago. Fearful of commitment, Gabe's heart is finally awakened to the possibility of being able to love again when a beautiful new waitress named Charlie Evans starts working at his favorite diner. With the awkwardness of a teenager, he begins a torrid and tumultuous relationship with this brash, young woman nearly half his age who already has one male in her life, an over-protective Alaskan malamute named Max who thinks he's human as well. Meanwhile, Gabriel has just begun to work on his eleventh novel, but after a few weeks he realizes that something isn't quite right as the characters he's writing about begin to take over the story, leading him to believe that there is something sinister and evil lurking beneath the lines of prose on his computer. As he continues to record their story, he soon discovers the boundary between their world, and this world is beginning to blur. But that is just the beginning. Just weeks into his roller coaster relationship with Charlie, he begins to experience dreams with such realism, vividness, and rich detail, it comes as no surprise when he learns that he is now able to consciously control and manipulate what happens within his dreamscape. But he soon becomes aware that he has caught the attention of a powerful and seemingly unstoppable malevolent entity that has now set its sights on killing not only his friends and framing him for the heinous crimes, but perhaps his last best chance at love, Charlie Evans. Realizing all three worlds are somehow connected to each other, and responsible for the intense sexual desires he is experiencing and writing about, he knows that if there is any chance left at getting his own life back in order, he's got to solve the mystery in all three worlds before they collide, killing not only him and the woman he's falling in love with, but everyone he knows and cares about.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The media-driven world places enormous pressure on people to conform to its secular point of view—and young people are especially susceptible to this ploy. Writing to a student audience, authors Mike and Daniel Blackaby (the grandsons of Experiencing God author Henry Blackaby) explain how Christians typically respond to this pressure in one of three ways, assigning names for each group: "Cave-Ins" are Christians who accept the world's values and compromise their faith or abandon it altogether. "Cave-Dwellers" are believers who fear the world and seek to insulate themselves from it and its influence as much as possible. "Colliders" are the Christians who remain true to their faith yet effectively engage the world and are used by God to change peoples' lives. When Worlds Collide is the Blackabys' case for becoming a Collider. In chapters packed with story-based devotional thoughts, plenty of humor, and easy steps for application, they prove it's possible to live an authentic Christian life that meets the world head-on without spiritual compromise.
