Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse Hay and grain have always been so abundant in America that every farmer could afford to keep at least one horse, however small his holding. The business of all except the older great cities is still largely carried on by men who were reared on the farm and who love the horse. This fact, coupled with cheap maintenance and abundant traffic, has-filled the cities as well as the country districts with horses. Unfortunately, until the twelfth Census was taken, we have had no means of knowing the exact number. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The New Book of the Horse Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Book of the Horse Classic Reprint written by Charles Richardson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Book of the Horse The Arab, it may not be generally known, has stood still in his own country through out the long period of time during which anything definite has been known about him. He has undoubtedly the same elegant outline, the same beautiful appearance, and the same wonderful stamina for which he has always been noted. But in his native state he is no bigger or heavier than he was when he was first introduced into this country some thing like 300 years ago, and this is probably due to the fact that he is bred in countries which do not possess such land as is to be found in many parts of the United Kingdom. It may be urged that the Arab in his own country does not require the luxuriant grasses upon which English horses are reared, and to some extent that is true; but it may be pointed out that when Arabs, Barbs, and other Eastern sires were brought to this country with a view to improving our native breed, the size quickly increased, even in horses whose blood was almost entirely Eastern. The fact is that England, Ireland, and even parts of Scotland, are eminently suitable for horse - breeding, as are the blue grass plains of Ken tucky, the Percheron district of France, certain parts also of the Northern Coast of France, and many districts of Australia and New Zealand. Book Origin and History of the Horse Classic Reprint

Download or read book Origin and History of the Horse Classic Reprint written by Fairfield Osborn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin and History of the Horse The subject of the origin and history of the horse is not a simple one. It is a very complex one, because every scientific problem, like every financial problem, has its method of attack - from a number of different points of view. The first of the points to consider is that of the horse as the most perfect animal machine among the quadrupeds. Second, we shall see how this ma chine by purely natural processes evolved from comparatively small and simple beginnings. So we shall follow the evolution of a number of structures which make up this machine, and of the horse as a whole. Third, we shall look at the races, the wild breeds of the family of horses, as they are found in Asia and Africa today, because it is possible that some of these breeds throw some considerable light upon the most interesting of questions, the origin and history of this ani mal. Fourth, we come to the point where the history of the horse touches the history of man, and that was a turning point in the history of civilization, be cause, if you will reflect a moment, when man discovered the use of the horse, he discovered a mechanism which he could turn to his service in the same way as we use steam and electricity today. The horse became a means of civilization, of exploration and intercommunication. So, the history of the horse as a use ful animal to man comes in as the third or fourth topic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse: A Study in Natural History The works to be comprised in this Series are in tended to give on each subject the information which an intelligent layman might wish to possess. They are not primarily intended for the young, nor for the specialist, though even to him they will doubtless be often useful in supplying references, or suggesting lines of research. Each book will be complete in itself, care, however, being taken that while the books do not overlap, they supplement each other; and while scientific in treat ment, they will be, as far as possible, presented in simple language, divested of needless technicalities. The rapid progress of science has made it more and more difficult, and renders it now quite impossible, to master the works which appear, almost daily, on various branches of science, or to keep up with the proceedings of our numerous Scientific Societies. Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Things Worth Knowing About Horses Having said so much about harness horses, I am induced to mention certain habits many horses have that are very annoying. Hugging the pole is one. It greatly annoys the other horse, and' he will pro bably learn to do the same thing, not from imitation, but from leaning inwards so as to enable him the better to stand against the other leaning on him. I have often seen a pair of pieces thus going, each leaning on the other, till they might be figuratively likened to a pair of open compasses. It is extremely dangerous in frosty weather, or where the road Or pavement is from any cause slippery. It has the effect of causing the pole horses in descending a hill to draw straight from the pole, by which they are at their full length; whereas, horses going (as they should do) a little wider than on ordinary occasions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Examination of Horses as to Soundness: And Selection as to Purchase In offering this treatise to the public, my idea is to assist the horse-owner, the farmer, and the colonist to judge for himself as to the practical soundness of a horse he may be interested in - for it is not always convenient, or even practical, to send for the veterinary surgeon whenever a horse has to be looked over - and I shall endeavour to make myself as clear as possible to this class of my readers, avoiding as far as I can all technicalities with this purpose in view. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse: How to Breed and Rear Him I have taken it on myself to write the following work in the belief that such a book is really needed at the present time. Perhaps I have also been persuaded to the task by the kind reception accorded to my former volumes. I had something to say of a practical kind, such as only a breeder and trainer of many years' experience could say and I have done my best to put the results of that experience into these pages. My treatise on the horse, therefore, should contain much in the way of advice that may - and will, I hope - prove of value and assistance to others. There cannot be many such books recently published, for I do not know of one which is the work of a truly practical and experienced man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse and the War I wonder if people understand that in order to keep pace with the require ments of our Armies we have had to buy horses and mules running well into seven figures. I wonder! Can you, for instance, imagine that whereas the Army possessed about horses on August 4, 1914, we must now own at least a million? And in the interval of four years that million and many more - for, of course, we must allow for the heavy wastage from death and disease which has gone on in all the theatres Of war from day to day - have had to be bought in all parts of the world and brought by our Ships to Europe and the East. We have bought colossal numbers in North America, and others in South America, Australia and New Zealand, India, Spain, Portugal, South Africa, while camels, oxen and donkeys have been purchased for use in those theatres to which they were peculiarly suited. We may assume that the four or five hundred thousand bought Up to date in the United King dom and the seven or eight hundred thousand bought and Shipped from North America have been employed in this country and France in the same way as horses from Australasia would naturally be most conveniently used in Egypt, India and Mesopotamia. Book Horses Guns and Dogs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Horses Guns and Dogs Classic Reprint written by J. Otho Paget and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horses, Guns and Dogs If your parents can afford to keep horses, they can probably also afford to pay men to look after them, and therefore the whole Of your holidays need not be spent in the stable. You can, however, get a rudimentary idea of the way things should be done if you ask your father's head man to give you a little instruction - how to groom a pony, how to put a saddle and bridle on, &c., for there IS a knack in performing these operations. If you are born to wealth, you may not be obliged to saddle a horse more than two or three times in your life, but, when the occasion does come, you would like to be able to do it properly. Knowledge Of all kinds is always worth acquiring, and you can never tell when it will be useful. Take the head Of the bridle in the right hand, the bit in the palm of the left, then slip your thumb in the corner Of the horse's mouth, when you will find he will open it, and the thing is done. When you take your pony out yourself, you should make a practice of trying all four feet to see if any shoes are loose, and if there are any clinches up that he might possibly cut himself with. The clinches are the ends of the nails that have been hammered down, but which work up as the shoe wears thin.
