Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as health risks â€" and the earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Reducing Underage Drinking will serve as both a game plan and a call to arms for anyone with an investment in youth health and safety.

This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All across the United States, individuals, families, communities, and health care systems are struggling to cope with substance use, misuse, and substance use disorders. Substance misuse and substance use disorders have devastating effects, disrupt the future plans of too many young people, and all too often, end lives prematurely and tragically. Substance misuse is a major public health challenge and a priority for our nation to address. The effects of substance use are cumulative and costly for our society, placing burdens on workplaces, the health care system, families, states, and communities. The Report discusses opportunities to bring substance use disorder treatment and mainstream health care systems into alignment so that they can address a person's overall health, rather than a substance misuse or a physical health condition alone or in isolation. It also provides suggestions and recommendations for action that everyone-individuals, families, community leaders, law enforcement, health care professionals, policymakers, and researchers-can take to prevent substance misuse and reduce its consequences.

Book Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Among First Year College Students Infofacts

Download or read book Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Among First Year College Students Infofacts written by Virginia Ross and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although any new undertaking is exciting because of the opportunities it may bring, the transition to college life also brings new pressures and uncertainties. From the shelter of home, young people emerge into a new culture, with a new environment for success. Here they are their own masters, often far from the vigilance of parents and the strictures of tightly scheduled school days. As they take this step toward independence, they face the temptation to celebrate their newfound freedom, test limits, and perhaps escape from new pressures through alcohol and other drugs. This guide addresses three questions: (1) How serious is the problem of alcohol and other drug use among first-year students?; (2) What developmental and environmental factors make the first year of college a time of greater vulnerability?; and (3) How can prevention professionals help students successfully negotiate the sometimes perilous transition from high school to college life? (Contains 1 figure and 4 online resources.).

Book Alcohol and Other Drugs on Campus

Book excerpt: The most widespread health problem on college and university campuses in the United States is high-risk alcohol and other drug (AOD) use. Recent reports confirm that the nation's campuses continue to encounter significant consequences as a result of this problem. This "Infofacts/Resources" offers an overview of the problem and highlights effective prevention approaches that many campuses are currently following. Under the banner of "environmental management," the U.S. Department of Education's Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention recommends the following key environmental strategies: (1) Offer and promote social, recreational, extracurricular, and public service options that do not include alcohol and other drugs; (2) Create a social, academic, and residential environment that supports health-promoting norms; (3) Limit alcohol availability both on and off campus; (4) Restrict marketing and promotion of alcoholic beverages both on and off campus; and (5) Develop and enforce campus policies and enforce local, state, and federal laws. Book Alcohol and Other Drugs

Download or read book Alcohol and Other Drugs written by Barbara E. Ryan and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this document, The Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention focuses on prevention challenges at community colleges. Students at community colleges differ from those at four-year institutions in a number of areas, including social demographics as well as alcohol and other drug-related problems. Community college students are generally older than their counterparts at four-year institutions, usually married and with dependents, and are more likely to work full time while attending school part time. While community college students drink alcohol less often than students at four-year institutions, they reported using tobacco, marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, and hallucinogens more often. Thus, prevention efforts at community colleges may need to place greater emphasis on illicit drug use. Unfortunately, the lack of resources is a common problem across the board of educational institutions. Research suggests that the most promising approach to prevention is employing multiple strategies that affect the campus environment as a whole. A comprehensive approach would allow school officials and students to play significant roles in prevention and include clear policies, policy enforcement, education, intervention and treatment referral, and program evaluation.
