Book excerpt: Rhythm to My Beat by Andrea D. Last year a woman told me there would be a woman to teach me some things, and now I knew this unknown woman was Shai. Loving her has made me see that everything that glittered wasn’t gold. In fact sometimes the best treasurable women were found hiding behind a book, or relaxing under a tree writing the troubles of the world in ink. It never ceases to amaze me how Shai and I so different, were so alike. We both lost something we thought was precious along the way, but found something even better in each other. We discovered the meaning of true love with a simple kiss. While I became the bold lyrics of her empty verse, she became the soulful rhythm to my beat. This is a romance novel about a woman afraid to experience the twisted cons of love – until she meets a man who will show her the pros. Prepare to dive deeply into the world of Shai and Sincere.

Download or read book The French Laundry Cookbook written by Thomas Keller and published by Artisan. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIVIACP Award Winner 2019 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the acclaimed French Laundry restaurant in the Napa Valley—“the most exciting place to eat in the United States” (The New York Times). The most transformative cookbook of the century celebrates this milestone by showcasing the genius of chef/proprietor Thomas Keller himself. Keller is a wizard, a purist, a man obsessed with getting it right. And this, his first cookbook, is every bit as satisfying as a French Laundry meal itself: a series of small, impeccable, highly refined, intensely focused courses. Most dazzling is how simple Keller's methods are: squeegeeing the moisture from the skin on fish so it sautées beautifully; poaching eggs in a deep pot of water for perfect shape; the initial steeping in the shell that makes cooking raw lobster out of the shell a cinch; using vinegar as a flavor enhancer; the repeated washing of bones for stock for the cleanest, clearest tastes. From innovative soup techniques, to the proper way to cook green vegetables, to secrets of great fish cookery, to the creation of breathtaking desserts; from beurre monté to foie gras au torchon, to a wild and thoroughly unexpected take on coffee and doughnuts, The French Laundry Cookbook captures, through recipes, essays, profiles, and extraordinary photography, one of America's great restaurants, its great chef, and the food that makes both unique. One hundred and fifty superlative recipes are exact recipes from the French Laundry kitchen—no shortcuts have been taken, no critical steps ignored, all have been thoroughly tested in home kitchens. If you can't get to the French Laundry, you can now re-create at home the very experience Wine Spectator described as “as close to dining perfection as it gets.”

Download or read book What Are Wisdom and Intelligence written by James Kelley and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-02-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To whom it may concern, “What are wisdom and intelligence” chronicles the life of an average American’s struggle through a society eclipsed by a manmade distortion of true reality. This 430 page book shows people the everyday rollercoaster of an average Jim in 65 chapters peppered with the morals, ethics and coping skills learned through life experiences. Written for my children, this book has an i...ntense feel of introspect; and by reading this material, it will take you back to a lot of your own memories and give YOU back to the basics of YOU. This book will show you the simple things that are becoming lost in a society distracted by the complexities of life itself. “What are wisdom and intelligence” doesn’t speak of the actual meaning of wisdom and intelligence but instead poses the question of whether our society needs to ask this question in the first place or does society automatically judge a person by there wisdom and intelligence? This unique view of the simple man’s life brings back a sense of integrity through making bad decisions and seeing the results first hand. These missteps are further compromised due to the apathy of our time. Society has become too complicated in its own intelligence. People with a lot of education think that they have all the answers and often times refuse to listen to “the common man’s” wisdom. Here in lies the premise of my book and the average “Jim’s” plight. My life and in turn my book is filled with “the simple things in life that save us all.” Integrity, morals, ethics and a simple smile are the tools of an average Jim. My experience is life itself, nothing more and nothing less. I was a Jack of all trades and master of none. I started as a Marine and then did a bit of everything; truck driver, cowboy, fence contractor, restaurant manager, and taxi driver just to name a few. Also at one point, I hitch hiked across the US. My strength and wisdom came with time, as it should. The common sense approach to life is what brings me around to today. My daily inspirational thoughts on the internet have become strength for many and in time, I hope, will be one of the strengths of my book. My public speaking, thus far, has been filled with music, laughter and inspiration. People are searching, in many ways, for answers when they are right there in front of them and that is what makes this book so inspirational and introspective. People see themselves through the words I give to my children and in turn find the joy in their own life. There are no magic words to restore the basic realities of life but in there own minds. All they need to do is take away the distortions of wisdom and intelligence. I truly appreciate you taking the time to look at my simple book of life and hope that it will be the inspiration for you to want more. Please feel free to contact me and hope to hear from you soon. Thank you so much for your time. Respectfully, James H. Kelley

Book excerpt: In Peter Colt’s gritty, gripping new series set along the New England coast, a Boston-born Vietnam veteran and P.I. is hired to find a missing father—but may find far more than he bargained for . . . Boston, 1982. Private investigator Andy Roark has spent the past decade trying to rediscover his place in the world. In Vietnam, there was order and purpose. Everything—no matter how brutal—happened for a reason. Back home, after brief stints in college and with the police force, Roark has settled for a steady, easy routine of divorce and insurance fraud cases. Roark’s childhood friend, Danny Sullivan, dragged himself out of blue-collar Southie to become a respected and powerful lawyer. Now he wants Roark to help one of his clients with a sensitive request. Deborah Swift, wealthy wife of an aspiring California politician, is trying to trace her father, last seen on Cape Cod, who walked out on her and her mother long ago. Other investigators have turned up nothing, but Roark’s local connections might give him an edge. The case takes Roark to the island of Nantucket, tranquil in its off-season, and laden with picturesque charm. Yet even here, on the quaint cobblestoned streets and pristine beaches, Roark’s finely honed senses alert him to danger just below the surface. Nothing is quite as it seems. And the biggest case of Roark’s career may just shatter what little peace of mind he has left . . .
Download or read book The Last of the Menu Girls written by Denise Chávez and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rocío Esquibel is a girl growing up in a Southern New Mexico town with her mother and sister. She defines her neighborhood by its trees—the willow, the apricot and the one they call the marking-off tree. Rocio knows she was born in the closet where she and her sister now take turns looking at the picture of Jesus whose eyes light up in the dark. But at night she enters a magical realm, and in her imaginary Blue Room, she can fly. At first she is a mesmerized observer of the lives of older girls and their boyfriends, but as she finds a job at the local hospital, and discovers a passion for drama and stories, Rocio begins to make her own choices in love and work. Alive with the taste of tamales and the lyrical tang of the Esquibels’ talk, The Last of the Menu Girls becomes a rich celebration of Chicano culture, and a universal story of finding one’s way in the world.
