Download or read book 65 Days to Delhi written by Basil Jay and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-06-22 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974, despite having a young wife and three very young children, Basil suggested that he would like to take a year out and drive, with his family, some 30,000 miles, to India and back. This is the story of part of that incredible journey and of a group of young people they met and travelled with. A journey that would be impossible today. Three times held up by gunmen, in what the author describes as the badlands between Turkey and India. Witness to a ritual stoning to death in Ghazni. Locked up for a killing in Afghanistan. And accused of smuggling in Pakistan. The book is written with great humour and honesty. It is a story of a time before e-mails and mobile phones, a time before cash machinesa time when it was possible for your whereabouts to be unknown for weeks or months at a time. A story of dangerous mountain passes and dangerous people. But above all, it is a story of deep friendships quickly formed, of trust and of belief, and of the joy of being young, when, for you the extraordinary becomes ordinary, and the impossible becomes possible.

Download or read book Delhi written by Elizabeth Chatterjee and published by Random House India. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘... nobody who lives there, nobody at all, has much good to say about Delhi.’ Along with Milton Keynes, Detroit and Purgatory, Delhi is one of the world’s great unloved destinations. So when Elizabeth Chatterjee makes her way from the cool hum of Oxford to the demented June heat of heat of Delhi to research her PhD, she find herself both baffled and curious about the je ne sais quoi of this city of ‘graveyards and tombstones’. As flanêur and sagacious resident, Liz takes us through the serpentine power structures, the idyll, the bullshit—peeling layer after layer of the city’s skin to reveal its aspirations, its insecurity, its charm and finally its urban dissonance. Uncannily perceptive, predictive, and hysterical, Delhi Mostly Harmless puts a firm finger on the electric pulse of Delhi.

Download or read book A Contemporary Archaeology of Post Displacement Resettlement written by Erin P. Riggs and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the archaeology of the 1947 Partition, the largest mass migration in human history, and the resulting resettlement of half a million refugees in Delhi, India’s capital city. Interweaving material analysis with oral history collection and archival sources, this book considers how Delhi’s Partition refugees have interacted with the city's built landscapes through time. It demonstrates how government-built refugee colonies, influenced by both socialist and capitalist design philosophies, provided an effective and adaptable setting for resettlement. In contrast, it illustrates how Delhi’s pre-Partition landscapes—including ‘evacuee properties’ vacated by out-migrating Muslims and sections of the planned, colonial capital—have proven more problematic venues for rehousing. In these contexts, refugee families navigated life within homes shaped by past occupants and colonial-era wealth disparities. The book highlights that despite such difficulties and the unprecedented scale of Partition’s impact on Delhi, refugees have obtained an impressive degree of material success and social acceptance in the city. This example challenges assumptions about the aid-dependency of refugee communities, the potential effectiveness of public housing, and the mutability of national belonging. This interdisciplinary case study will be of interest to scholars in varied fields of study, including archaeology, architectural history, cultural anthropology, human geography, and South Asian studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1947, decolonization promised a better life for India's peasants, workers, students, Dalits, and religious minorities. By the 1970s, however, this promise had not yet been realized. Various groups fought for the social justice but in response, Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi suspended the constitution, and with it, civil liberties. The hope of decolonization that had turned to disillusion in the postcolonial period quickly descended into a nightmare. In this book, Kristin Plys recounts the little known story of the movement against the Emergency as seen through New Delhi's Indian Coffee House based on newly uncovered evidence and oral histories with the men who led the movement against the Emergency.
