  • Pages : 333 pages

Download or read book Good Pictures written by Kim Beil and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A picture-rich field guide to American photography, from daguerreotype to digital. We are all photographers now, with camera phones in hand and social media accounts at the ready. And we know which pictures we like. But what makes a "good picture"? And how could anyone think those old styles were actually good? Soft-focus yearbook photos from the '80s are now hopelessly—and happily—outdated, as are the low-angle portraits fashionable in the 1940s or the blank stares of the 1840s. From portraits to products, landscapes to food pics, Good Pictures proves that the history of photography is a history of changing styles. In a series of short, engaging essays, Kim Beil uncovers the origins of fifty photographic trends and investigates their original appeal, their decline, and sometimes their reuse by later generations of photographers. Drawing on a wealth of visual material, from vintage how-to manuals to magazine articles for working photographers, this full-color book illustrates the evolution of trends with hundreds of pictures made by amateurs, artists, and commercial photographers alike. Whether for selfies or sepia tones, the rules for good pictures are always shifting, reflecting new ways of thinking about ourselves and our place in the visual world.

Book excerpt: Learning the basics of photography can seem like a daunting task. At first glance, there is a whole new world of terminology to digest and tons of numbers to master. It can be confusing, frustrating, and overwhelming. It’s no wonder many people set their cameras to Auto and hope for the best in whatever situation they’re shooting, whether that’s a child’s soccer game, a birthday party, or a vacation. Unless luck strikes, the resulting images are usually not very good.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Enter Make Great Photos: A Friendly Guide for Improving Your Photographs. In this book, photographer and author Alan Hess teaches you the basics of photography by breaking down the topic into its fundamental parts. In the first section of the book, Alan explains what makes a great photo in the first place, examining a selection of images and working through why each one is successful. He then dives into chapters that cover the photographic choices every photographer needs to make. These choices boil down to just three main topics: light, focus, and composition.

In the second part of Make Great Photos, Alan addresses specific shooting situations—categorized into travel, sports and action, events, and people—discussing the challenges that each scenario poses and how to conquer them. Finally, you’ll learn the top five basic edits you need to know to make your images pop when you share them online.

At the end of chapters, there are thoughtful exercises and assignments that push you to learn and grow in your photography. These fun activities help you fully absorb the lessons throughout the book so you can head out with your camera and capture great images.

Book How to make great nature photographs with your smartphone

Download or read book How to make great nature photographs with your smartphone written by Jana Mänz and published by XinXii. This book was released on 2023-05-22 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of the smartphone as a camera is always controversial. Bestselling author Jana Mänz shows with her collection of tips that mobile phone cameras are of course also suitable for landscape and nature photography and writes from her many years of experience how to deal creatively with the weaknesses. The fact that the smartphone as a camera divides the photography world is already old hat. For some, the always-on camera is the means for creative photography par excellence, for others the achievable quality alone is out of the question. I have chosen the creative side and show how you can use your smartphone for nature and landscape photography. In doing so, I address the following questions: How do you set up the camera optimally? What makes a good nature photo? How can you deal with image noise? Can you expose correctly? What is the macro mode good for? Candy-coloured photos are out. Why HDR is important! Why do grid lines make sense for composition? How can you create your own image look? Are bokehs and aperture stars possible? Which apps and accessories are really necessary? How do you find motifs in nature? The question is, how can you deal creatively with the weaknesses of the smartphone camera? Despite the limitations, taking photos with a mobile phone is a lot of fun. It is almost always at hand and easy and handy to use. The individual chapters do not build on each other, so you can read the contents crosswise at any time. With the help of many nature pictures, I give you numerous practical tips and tricks. The book is written for passionate amateur photographers with previous knowledge who have so far shied away from taking nature and landscape pictures with their smartphone.

Book Photography in 100 Words

Download or read book Photography in 100 Words written by David Clark and published by White Lion Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question ‘What is photography?' is not an easy one to answer. Many thousands of words have been written in an effort to do so, in academic journals and in books by cultural commentators such as Susan Sontag and Roland Barthes. If we acknowledge that it is impossible to provide a definitive answer, can we at least distil the meaning of photography into somewhat fewer words, and get to the very essence of the medium without diminishing its importance as an art form? This book aims to do just that. David Clark has selected 50 iconic images by some of the world's greatest photographers and asked them to explain how the pictures were made and their creative approach. From these interviews he has chosen 100 words that encapsulate their philosophy, and which are picked out in bold in the text. The highlighted words work on two levels. As well as giving insights into iconic images from the photographers who took them, they build over the course of the book into a unique creative lexicon of the photographic medium - one which crystallises its many aims and functions, perspectives and meanings. Thought-provoking, insightful and inspirational, Photography in 100 Words will appeal to all photographers and anyone who seeks a better understanding of the medium. David Clark is a photography journalist and author. He was the senior features writer on Amateur Photographer magazine for nine years, during which time he met and interviewed many of the world's great photographers.

Book Step by Step Lighting for Outdoor Portrait Photography

Download or read book Step by Step Lighting for Outdoor Portrait Photography written by Jeff Smith and published by Amherst Media. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many aspects to professional photography: composition, camera angles, exposure, color balance, posing, and lighting— just to name a few. However, while each of these aspects of photography is important in the creation of a professional portrait, lighting presents a special challenge that is part art and part science. When the two come together effectively, the results are stunning; when any one aspect of the recipe falls short, the result is a poor exposure or a downright unflattering look. On the artistic side of the scale, lighting is one of the primary tools for setting the mood of the portrait. It can communicate a sense of bright, airy ease or sharp, dramatic tension—or anything in between. Determining what look is right for the client (and for their intended use of the resulting portraits) is a key decision. From there, the photographer can begin to use light to sculpt the subject’s features, minimizing problem areas or accentuating the subject’s best features through the selection of light modifiers and the positioning of the lights themselves. Moving to the technical side, outdoor lighting present particular challenges—but also some significant advantages. Outdoors, photographers shoot at least partially with natural light. While this is (most of the day) an abundant light source, it is largely out of the control of the photographer. The light can change from moment to moment as clouds pass between the earth and sun. It also changes continually throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky. Since he can’t completely control the light, the photographer must be prepared to adapt his subject’s pose and position to create flattering results with the light as-is. Alternately, the photographer can “tweak” the lighting by augmenting the sunlight with flash or reflectors—or even softening it, using scrim or other diffusers. (Of course, this leaves another major concern: the background. Even if the light on the subject can be perfected, rarely can the photographer also control the light on an area as large as the background—making it a major concern in the process of posing and lighting.) So, given all this, why would any photographer choose to make portraits outside? One advantage is that the lighting and scenes are free—making outdoor photography a great starting point for those entering the field. Even established studios, however, have found that clients simply like the natural, timeless look of outdoor portraits. This makes them strong sellers. Additionally, most portrait subjects are more at ease in natural light than when seated in front of bright, noisy studio-flash units—and relaxed subjects translate into better expressions, and better overall portraits. In this book, Smith takes you through the process or lighting outdoor portraits from start to finish, covering both the artistic and technical aspects of achieving success. Short one- or two-page lessons are amply illustrated to guide the reader through each phase. In many cases, before and after images—or image sequences showing variations and alternative approaches—are presented to facilitate learning. Readers are encouraged to have this book with them during practice sessions and work on replicating or refining the provided examples, creating a self-study course in the art of lighting for outdoor portrait photography.
