Book Opening Closed Guard the Origins of Jiu Jitsu in Brazil

Download or read book Opening Closed Guard the Origins of Jiu Jitsu in Brazil written by robert drysdale and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-26 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the origins of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Is it merely a by-product--a rebel offspring--of Judo? What was the nature and content of the art that Mitsuyo Maeda, a.k.a. "Count Koma", and other Japanese were teaching in the Amazon? Was it Judo? Jiu-Jitsu? His own personal fight-tested style, built on a foundation of Judo and informed by his dozens and dozens of matches around the world? What was the bridge between the art he learned at the Kodokan and the Brazilian style that claims him as its godfather: a style now practiced by millions worldwide (and growing bigger every day)? Should Maeda even be at the center of this story? And what role did Carlos and Hélio Gracie play in all of this? Did they "invent" BJJ? Would BJJ exist without them? And, if so, what--if anything--did they create? And why does this history matter to the average BJJ practitioner today? Any history possesses its official narrative with its own favorite characters and events. But true history is seldom simple, and more oft than not the real story is far richer than the popular version that is widely repeated and handed down. The history of BJJ and MMA in Brazil doesn't escape this paradigm. The recent renaissance in research in regards to the history of martial arts in Brazil led to the author's curiosity, which in turn led to the documentary Closed-Guard: The Origins of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil, which in turn led to this book. This manuscript started as an account of the author's recollections of the film's production, and quickly grew into much more. Opening Closed Guard: The Story Behind the Film contains conclusions, analysis, and historical interpretations, as well as the story behind the documentary itself and the many challenges it faced along the way. It contains interviews, research articles pertaining to the history of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil, as well as the author's own take on the current state of BJJ and MMA. Finally, it is the story of the author rediscovering his love for Jiu-Jitsu in a completely new and unexpected way. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Born in the US from a Brazilian mother and American father, and having spent his life between these two countries, Robert Drysdale remains the only American competitor to have ever won both the IBJJF and ADCC World Championships, the two most prestigious tournaments in all of Jiu-Jitsu. Furthermore, he has also cultivated a career in MMA, both as a fighter and as a coach. The author also holds a Bachelor's Degree in History, as well as a long-held passion for this discipline. He lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. He is also the co-founder of the international team Zenith Jiu-Jitsu, and is the father of two girls.

Book Japanese Jiu jitsu

Download or read book Japanese Jiu jitsu written by Darrell Max Craig and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With extensive, step-by-step photographs and instructions, this jiu-jitsu guide is an effective tool for mastering this ancient martial art. The original Japanese martial art developed by the elite samurai class during Japan's feudal era, Jiu-jitsu is the forerunner of Judo and the precursor of today's ultimate fighting styles, such as mixed martial arts (MMA). For centuries, this method of unarmed self-defense proved so successful in combat that it was kept secret and taught only to a select few. Based on the author's study with instructors at the Tokyo police academy, this martial arts book presents all the traditional techniques of Jujitsu, also known as Jiu-jitsu. These techniques teach you valuable restraining methods that force your opponent to submit without abuse by using pressure points. It shows you tips for search and seizure, and the almost extinct art of Hojojutsu--how to tie people up without using any knots. Japanese Jiu-jitsu: Secret Techniques of Self-Defense addresses and demonstrates the full range of Kaisho Goshin Budo Taiho Jitsu Ryu (Tokyo police self-defense). Learn specific techniques such as: The use of hands Throwing an opponent Attacking vital points with strikes and kicks The use of weapons (like the staff). This fascinating Jiujitsu book, designed as a training manual, also serves as a remarkable illustrated guide to the secret art of Japanese samurai self-defense.

Book The Complete Kano Jiu Jitsu Judo

Download or read book The Complete Kano Jiu Jitsu Judo written by H. Irving Hancock and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2016-01-16 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best guide to learning jiu-jitsu ever written in English, this is the most comprehensive study available. It describes the authentic form of judo developed in the late 19th century by Professor Jiguro Kano — not the many imitations often called by this name. Officially recognized by the Japanese government as the preeminent school of jiu-jitsu, the Kano system was the method in which Japanese armed forces and police were trained. The complete system of 160 holds and throws is clearly explained, with 487 photographs and four charts providing further clarification. Pressure points, balance, falling, and every other important aspect receives full and complete treatment. The first section presents 60 "tricks" of combat in strict sequence that prepare for part two, in which readers learn how to apply the advantages of the tricks they've learned. The third section deals with highly scientific tricks of combat, by which an opponent may be incapacitated — and the methods of kuatsu, or resuscitation, by which a fallen opponent may be revived. Martial arts students at every level of experience will find this classic guide a source of valuable information and instruction.

Book What Is Jiu Jitsu

Download or read book What Is Jiu Jitsu written by D.S. Hopkins and published by First Edition Design Pub.. This book was released on 2015-10-02 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'What Is Jiu Jitsu? The Martial Arts And How To Understand Them' is a book that considers first and foremost the Japanese feudal discipline of Jiu Jitsu, its life and lineage. From linguistics to its relationships with the martial arts of its immediate family, the offspring of that family and their characteristics are all regarded. The forces that shaped these martial arts are identified in an attempt to create a perspective of the parent discipline itself and the distance it has traveled to reach its present state. It is placed in historical context and considered for its role in the life of the Samurai, the eras that changed it, until finally its role today in the wider world. In close conjunction with the exploration of Jiu Jitsu and its survival of the turbulent eras from which it came is also the consideration of other martial practices from other parts of the globe that also survived, as well as those that didn't. The almost inseparable relationship of martial arts and martial sports is assessed, the personages that defined different disciplines and were responsible for some of the later milestones on the martial science landscape. Even the prospective student is provided a few road signs to watch for on the path to study. In the later parts of the work the underlying theory of function for a martial art is simplified to create some small illumination for the processes that govern the operation of the martial sciences. And finally the factors outside the training hall's indoctrination and preparation are given form and name, from anatomical limitations to artificial enhancements and the impact they all have on the performance of a martial art. Comparative techniques are illustrated in black and white within the book to better serve the goal of contrasting one style of Jiu Jitsu to another, and to provide the reader an idea of what the different martial arts related to Jiu Jitsu look like, and more importantly how their apt to behave. Various diagrams and maps throughout the book help to facilitate the aim of the work, which is to create an insight into Jiu Jitsu and what it is. Keywords: Martial Art, Jiu Jitsu, Jujitsu, Jujutsu, Grappling, Samurai, Fighting, Combat, MMA, Sport

Book excerpt: As the world becomes increasingly complex, young people are confronted with greater challenges and higher expectations. They are hurled into an age of technology where they are given instant access to new information at a startling rate. This abundance of knowledge is seldom met with the wisdom and virtue necessary to navigate the intricate aspects of life. Thus, in Between Two Worlds, Alan Hidalgo presents a multicultural collection of ten novels tailored for young adults that abound with timeless truths that will never fade. In this unique anthology, Hidalgo seeks to inspire others to seek a life of purpose and meaning by offering profound insights into human behavior. Insights which guide multiculturalism not as an ideology where all cultural aspects must be accepted and approved, but instead which lead to universal truths that result in a broader worldview, enabling readers to openly and objectively perceive both the beauty and the ugliness found in all nationalities. Each of the ten novels contains an intriguing plot that brings the reader face-to-face with a diverse collection of fictional characters as they search for identity, honesty, and courage amidst a world often characterized by confusion, deceit, and fear. The Between Two Worlds Anthology is a multilingual literary work distinguished by its realistic fiction and life relevance. It is also the foundational text for the classroom resources Between Two Worlds Student Workbook and Between Two Worlds Instructor Manual, which are ideal for secondary and postsecondary educational levels.
