Book excerpt: Programs that seek to increase women’s participation in marketing activities related to the principal household economic activity must involve men if they are to be successful. In this paper we analyze take-up of a project that sought to increase women’s involvement in sugarcane marketing and sales by encouraging the registration of a sugarcane block contract in the wife’s name. We find that men who are more educated and live in households with higher wealth and expenditures are more likely to agree to the registration. Households with more cane blocks and in which the wife is already more involved in cane activities are also more likely to participate. Overall, take-up is high at 70%, and remains high even in those groups that are less likely to take-up. Additionally, we find that blocks transferred to women are not of lower quality or value than those kept by men, though they are smaller and closer to the home. These results suggest that simple encouragement can be an effective tool to nudge men to include their wives in household commercial activities.

This article discusses the financial needs of midstream actors in agricultural value chains, emphasizing differences across midstream activities and highlighting how value chain characteristics can influence both financial needs and potential remedies. The paper concludes with a discussion of the prospects of digital financial services to alleviate financial needs of midstream actors.

Economic recovery continues at a sluggish pace with growth in the region expected to pick up to 3 .1 percent in 2020 and 3 .2 percent in 2021. Accelerating poverty reduction in Africa requires action in four policy areas: fertility reduction, leveraging the food system on and off the farm, addressing risk and conflict, and providing more public financing to the poverty reduction agenda. Sustaining growth and eradicating poverty calls for policy solutions to empower African women in the following dimensions: building the right skills, relieving capital constraints, securing land rights, connecting women to labor, addressing social norms that limit women's economic opportunities, and boosting the capacity of the next generation.

Because most women in the developing world reside in male-headed households, considering the role of men in advancing women’s empowerment is an important research objective. In this note we report results related to the take-up of a women’s economic empowerment initiative aimed at sugarcane farmers in Uganda, and focus on the agency of men in determining the household’s participation. We also assess the impact of a couples-based workshop on project take-up. In this study, we partnered with Kakira Sugar Limited (KSL), a large sugar company near Jinja, Uganda, that sets the purchase price and buys most of its sugarcane from smallholder contract farm-ers, who are mainly men. Though women participate in labor related to sugarcane, they are infrequently involved in any of the sugar-related marketing activities, meaning that men generally control the sugar-related income.

Book excerpt: In smallholder households that engage in commercial agriculture, women are often involved in the phys-ical labor related to the cash crop, but do not engage in the market-facing activities. As a result, men tend to control the profits from these crops, which are increasingly important to household livelihoods. The Farm and Family Balance project implemented an intervention that sought to mitigate this issue. The project encouraged households associated with a large sugar company near Jinja, Uganda to regis-ter at least one of their sugarcane blocks with the wife instead of the husband, thereby including her in the market activities associated with that block and giving her access to the block profits. Take-up of the intervention was high; 72% of households that were offered the opportunity chose to participate. The project was implemented as a randomized control trial to allow for the study of the impacts on house-holds. In this note, we provide information regarding the quality of the blocks transferred to women and the resulting changes to the company’s portfolio.

Book excerpt: Women often have less access to agricultural information than men, constraining their participation in decision-making on crops, technologies, and practices. In the design of agricultural extension programs, women may be viewed as insignificant actors in agricultural production. Moreover, even if their role is recognized, valuable information on production does not flow freely within the household from men to women. Among groups of maize-farming households in eastern Uganda, we explore the impacts on women’s empowerment from the use of gender-responsive information and communication technologies to provide extension services, specifically videos that feature women as information providers. The research tests the relative impact of the videos, contrasting their informational effects versus their role model effects, on women’s knowledge, their agency, and their achievements in farming. The results show that targeting women with information increases their achievements in farming. However, the results for the role-model effects are mixed.

Many stylized facts about women in agriculture have been repeated for decades. Did nothing really change? Is some of this conventional wisdom simply maintained over time, or has it always been inaccurate? We use longitudinal data from Ghana to assess some of the facts and to evaluate whether gender patterns have changed over time. We focus on five main themes: land, cropping patterns, market participation, agricultural inputs, and employment. We add to the literature by showing new facts and evidence from more than 20 years. Results are varied and highlight the difficulty of making general statements about gender in agriculture.
