Download or read book Football Fields and Battlefields written by Miller Jeff and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2003 Army football team achieved futility in major college play that might never be equaled, losing all 13 of its games. The squad that took the field on a frigid December 2003 day in Philadelphia for the celebrated Army-Navy game featured only eight fourth-year seniors, just a slice of the fifty energetic freshmen—“plebes” in academy vernacular—who reported to West Point amid the heat and humidity of the summer of 2000, hoping to land spots on the football team. For most of the fifty, West Point represented their best—or only—opportunity to play major college football. They were bypassed by the big-time football schools that award athletic scholarships, which aren’t available at the nation’s military academies. Making a five-year active-duty military commitment following graduation was a small price to pay during peacetime. But peacetime in America ended only days into their second year at the academy, on September 11, 2001. Those eight seniors, like virtually all of their cadet peers, maintained their commitments to the US Army in the wake of 9/11. They worked their way up from West Point’s JV football team as freshmen, earned positions on the Black Knights’ varsity team as others left the program—voluntarily or otherwise—and walked to the center of the field for the coin toss before that final opportunity for victory, against the arch-rival Midshipmen. The football field then gave way to the battlefield. Most of the eight were deployed overseas, serving at least one tour in either Iraq or Afghanistan. One won the Bronze Star, another the Purple Heart. One qualified for an elite Rangers battalion, another for the 160th special operations aviation Night Stalkers. They took on enemy fire. They grieved at the loss of brothers in arms. They hugged their loved ones tightly upon returning home. There was no more talk of football losses. They were winners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Civil War, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad took the lead among southern railroads in developing rail systems and organizing transcontinental travel. Through two world wars, federal government control, internal crises, external dissension, the Depression, and the great Ohio River flood of 1937, the L&N Railroad remained one of the country's most efficient lines. It is a southern institution and a railroad buff's dream. When eminent railroad historian Maury Klein's definitive History of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad was first published in 1972, it quickly became one of the most sought after books on railroad history. This new edition both restores a hard-to-find classic to print and provides a new introduction by Klein detailing the L&N's history in the thirty years since the book was first published.

Book excerpt: On a Sunday in May 2008, an F-5 tornado struck the town of Parkersburg, Iowa, killing eight people and destroying 250 homes and businesses within 34 seconds. The next day, Parkersburg’s beloved football coach, Ed Thomas, made a stunning prediction: “God willing, we will play our first home game here on this field this season.” One hundred days later, the home team scored a victory on the field they dubbed “The Sacred Acre,” serving as a galvanizing point for the town to band together and rebuild. But just as Parkersburg was recovering, another devastating tragedy struck. While working with a group of football and volleyball players early one morning, one of Ed’s former students walked in and gunned him down point blank. Ed Thomas was 58. The murder of this hometown hero spread across national news headlines. Ed’s community and family reeled from shock. Yet the story doesn’t end here. What happened next proves that even a double tragedy is no match for faith, love ... and the power of forgiveness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ANGELS IN COMBAT BOOTS – A SYNOPSIS In 1802 Thomas Jefferson signed the legislation that established the United States Military Academy at West Point. It was an all-male institution to train and educate officers for the United States Army. That all changed in 1973 when the 93rd Congress passed legislation that would ensure that admission to the service academies would be made without regard to a candidate’s sex, race, color, or religious beliefs.” Women were coming to West Point! They may be able to handle the academics, but they will never be able to handle the physical requirements echoed across the plain. Part of Day 1 processing is a pull-up test. Many of the women struggled, and “I told you so” became the thought of the day. However, when all new cadets were awakened the following morning and reported to physical training, upper-class cadets and tactical officers were shocked when a few of the women could run in the “fast” group. That simply couldn’t be...but it was. Running was the one area where both men and women participated shoulder to shoulder on a daily basis, and women with cross country experience could not only run with the average men, they could run with many of the better men. They were instrumental in breaking down those barriers and helping to fully integrate women into the Corps of Cadets. Women did belong...women could handle the physical requirements. In this book you will get to know that first women’s cross-country team. You will follow their athletic recruitment, their summer training at Corps Squad Screening, understand the challenges of being among the first women at the academy and see how they handled their first varsity meet. You will understand how they became known as “Charlie’s Angels”, watch them develop as runners who could initially only handle minimal mileage to the team that became Eastern Champions, finished in the nation’s top 10 twice, and even became the first Army women’s team to BEAT NAVY...a special stealth competition but a win none-the-less. They were special women and were truly...ANGELS IN COMBAT BOOTS!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I progressed through my decades of teaching, coaching and counseling, I remembered many successes and many failures on the part of myself, my colleagues. Many days we would drive home thinking that we should have done something differently to turn around a child, stop a fight, follow up with a conference with counselors, parents, or administrators. Those are learning experiences that help even the best of us.These are children. They are not plants. We just don't walk up to them with a watering can, give them a little water, and expect a well-behaved, motivated individual to grow and develop in that chair. They are human. Their intellectual levels are different. They may come from broken homes. They may be hungry and have all the other influences on their lives. We can't forget that. Yet as I pass two other high schools on the way to work, everything on the outside appears orderly. Students file through the doors and get to their classes. I wonder if these schools have the same knuckleheads, drug dealers, troublemakers that my school does--and I know that they do. I want to take you to a year in my teaching past that was particularly unique. Mind you, a vast majority of the students followed the rules, got to class on time, did their homework, etc. Most teachers also did the right things. But from time to time, the wrong mix of students and the wrong mix of teachers have educators questioning their career choice. There are students that economically have more than others. Drugs from one group to another is increasing. Drinking is rampant, and some teachers need to brush up on their professionalism. Parents too have found the need for improvement.
