Book excerpt: Specifically, by examining the policy goals and instruments that can be used by the public, private and voluntary sectors, it provides a policy blueprint for creating the enabling condi- tions that can lead to improved child outcomes.1 Concern for good child outcomes gave rise to the major project, What Is the Best Policy Mix for Canada's Children?, undertaken by the Family Network of the Canadian. [...] The overall project goal was, and is, to contribute to the development of a societal strategy for Canada's children.2 To get there, and to ground its conclusions in evidence-based research, CPRN as- sessed the situation of Canadian children and their families, including the values held by Canadians about issues related to parenting. [...] There is agreement that "good" child outcomes are associated with: (1) the achievement of a spec- trum of stage salient developmental tasks, (2) the attainment of human capital, meaning the acquisi- tion of knowledge and skills needed to make a productive contribution to the economy, and (3) the demonstration of social capacity, meaning the pres- ence of empathy for others that reflects concern fo. Child Benefits • The National Child Benefit (NCB) provides the framework for child benefits. [...] RE FLEXION18 By "observing the situation on the ground" as well as listening to the hopes and difficulties parents and their advocates describe in achieving the three enabling conditions, we have constructed the fol- lowing list of the major gaps in the mix of Canada's policies toward children and their families: • Little recognition of the costs that all parents bear when raising children • Insuf.

Download or read book An International Comparison of Policies and Outcomes for Young Children written by Shelley Ann Phipps and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this project is to explore possible linkages between social policy mix and outcomes for young children in Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States. Since the analysis is quantitative in nature, the focus is primarily on the tax and transfer programmes available in the five countries that can more easily be studied using quantitative techniques. The research attempts to move us toward an improved understanding of possible links between the mix of programmes available for children in any country and outcomes for children in that country.

Book Making Change

Download or read book Making Change written by Sheila H. Kieran and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Laidlaw Foundation was established in 1949 by Walter and Robert Laidlaw, sons of the founder of the R. Laidlaw Lumber Company. This book is a history of the Laidlaw family, how it amassed money, and why the brothers decided to disperse it as they did. Making Change is also a record of the work of the foundation over the past 50 years. The impact has been to help children in need, to train scholars, and to support social, cultural, and environmental causes. Overall, this book seeks to identify what motivates people to act philanthropically and the implications of their doing so. It is interesting to understand what persuades wealthy people to give away their money and provide leadership in areas where government stewardship is lacking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changing Canada examines political transformations, welfare state restructuring, international boundaries and contexts, the new urban experience and creative resistance. The authors question dominant ways of thinking and promote alternative ways of understanding and explaining Canadian society and politics that encourage progressive social change. They examine how the evolution of capitalism is producing new types of transformations and new forms of resistance, and show that aspects of the state and the wider society are being contested. They also discuss the often paradoxical or contradictory effects of various social forces, such as the liberating but also constraining features of new communications technologies, new employment norms and new household forms.

Book Good Government Good Citizens

Download or read book Good Government Good Citizens written by W.A. Bogart and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good Government? Good Citizens? explores the evolving concept of the citizen in Canada at the beginning of this century. Three forces are at work in reconstituting the citizen in this society: courts, politics, and markets. Many see these forces as intersecting and colliding in ways that are fundamentally reshaping the relationship of individuals to the state and to each other. How has Canadian society actually been transformed? Is the state truly in retreat? Do individuals, in fact, have a fundamentally altered sense of their relationship to government and to each other? Have courts and markets supplanted representative politics regarding the expression of basic values? Must judicialized protection of human rights and minority interests necessarily mean a diminished concern for the common good on the part of representative politics? To what extent should markets and representative politics maintain a role in the protection of human rights and minority interests? Will representative politics ever hold the public trust again? Good Government? Good Citizens? responds to these questions. It does so by examining the altered roles of courts, politics, and markets over the last two decades. It then examines a number of areas to gauge the extent of the evidence regarding transformations that have occurred because of these changing roles. There are chapters on the First Peoples, cyberspace, education, and on an ageing Canada. The book concludes with reflections on the “good citizen” at the dawning of the new century. Of particular interest to professors and students of law and political science, Good Government? Good Citizens? will appeal to anyone interested in the changing face of Canada and its citizens.
