Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters and Addresses on Freemasonry This kindness of Mr. Gridley was never forgot ten by my father; I trust it never will be forgotten by his children. From that day forth, while Mr. Gridley lived, he was the intimate friend, per sonal and professional, of my father. He died in 1767. My father often resorted to him for friend ly counsel, and, as he was grand master of the lodge, once asked his advice, whether it was worth his while to become a member of the society. In the candor of friendship Mr. Gridley answered him, No, adding that by aggregation to the soci ety a young man might acquire a little artificial support, but that he did not need it, and that there was nothing in the Masonic institution worthy of his seeking to be associated with it. So said at that time the Grand Master of the Massachusetts Masons, Jeremy Gridley; and such, I have repeatedly heard my father say, was the reason why he never joined the lodge. Book A Standard History of Freemasonry in the State of New York

Download or read book A Standard History of Freemasonry in the State of New York written by Peter Ross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 910 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Standard History of Freemasonry in the State of New York: Including Lodge, Chapter, Council, Commandery and Scottish Rite Bodies The effort has been made to write a veritable history, not a mere summary of volumes of proceedings; to write a volume which would give any reader an idea of the story of Freemasonry in the Empire State, and at the same time be so purely and suf ficiently Masonic as to warrant the attention of the most devoted member of the fra ternity. Comparativelv little has been said of the history of the ritual, for it was felt that that subject could not, with any degree of fullness, be properly treated in a work of this kind - if, indeed, it were wise to treat it at all in a printed book - and mere details of legislation have been passed by with, at best, but brief mention. Yet no attempt has been made to ignore any thread which gave the slightest color to the mass, and all events of moment, such as the troubles of 1823 or 1837, the Morgan excitement, and the like, have been fully and carefully considered. Book History of Freemasonry in the State of New York Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Freemasonry in the State of New York Classic Reprint written by Ossian Herbert Lang and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Freemasonry in the State of New York The object of the following pages is to give in simple language a general survey of the historic development of Freemasonry in the State of New York. The introductory chapters deal, in the most summary fashion, with the beginning of present day Freemasonry in the British Isles and the American colonies. Just enough is told to pre pare the way for a better appreciation of the story of the Craft in New York. Detail has been eliminated, except where it seemed desirable to clarify a difficult situation, as, for example, the anti-masonic excitement at the begin ning of the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Official records have been consulted throughout to the end that the presented facts may be accepted as reliable. The chapters dealing with most recent affairs are even more condensed than the rest, and personal references have been avoided altogether here. Nothing has been sup pressed; though much has been omitted, which directly interested brethren might wish to have seen included. All that is claimed for the survey is that it is as accurate as careful historic research of one man can make it. This book was released on 2018-10-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freemasonry in the Thirteen Colonies The publication of the original chapters in the Grand Lodge Bulletin of Iowa brought the author most wel come and valuable comments from his colleagues in the Masonic library and periodical field. Appropriate cor rections have been made in the present volume where such were called for; new matter was received which has been added wherever advisable. Yet to include all the information submitted would require an augmenta tion of the volume far exceeding its primary scope and purpose; the complete recital belongs more properly to the larger individual histories of each jurisdiction affected. The temptation also existed to include matter related to ritual and jurisprudence; but these are sub jects worthy of separate treatment, with due considera tion for the limitations which Masonic propriety and the recognized conservatism of the Masonic institution impose upon Craft writers. Book On the Origin of Free Masonry

Download or read book On the Origin of Free Masonry written by Thomas Paine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Origin of Free Masonry is a work by the famous and popular Thomas Paine. Paine is of course the well-known political activist who played a role in both the French and American revolutions. His most famous works include Common Sense and The American Crisis. This book consists of a short essay intended to introduce the reader to free masonry and the background of the fraternal organization. While there is no evidence that Paine himself was a freemason, he was well known as a religious skeptic, and was particularly critical of Christianity. This version of On the Origin of Free Masonry is actually stripped of several passages critiquing Christianity that were included in a later publication of this book. Paine's short essay begins with a brief literature review of other sources that have detailed Freemasonry. From there, the author discusses some of the underlying principles and beliefs of Freemasonry, and goes through a series of questions and answers for the new apprentice. The book concludes with a brief commentary on the need for secrecy amongst the Freemasons. At less than thirty pages, this is a very quick read. Paine is knowledgeable about the subject and has prepared a well-crafted introduction to the society. Indeed, this book does provide a short but detailed synopsis that is appropriate for the layman interested in Freemasonry. Ultimately, On the Origin of Free Masonry will be read as much for its historical significance as for its content. The book is both interesting as an introductory guide to Freemasonry and a glimpse into Paine's anti religious beliefs, and is thus recommended reading.
