Book excerpt: This book started with a conversation with a friend about how their life and my life could have been so different if certain things had happened at a certain point in time. I was motivated to explore that proposition, and my exploration led to the writing of this book. I began to realize that so many of us reach back into the past for answers, without realizing the amazing destiny that God has prepared for us, if we would just decline to reach back and not ponder the "what ifs." One of the realities of life is the difficult process of decision-making. Once a decision has been made, after extrapolating the best information available and at your disposal, there should be a limited amount of "what ifs."

Book excerpt: A lot of professors give talks titled 'The Last Lecture'. Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy? When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave, 'Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams', wasnt about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because time is all you have and you may find one day that you have less than you think). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humour, inspiration, and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

Book On Not Being Someone Else

Download or read book On Not Being Someone Else written by Andrew H. Miller and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating book about the emotional and literary power of the lives we might have lived had our chances or choices been different. We each live one life, formed by paths taken and untaken. Choosing a job, getting married, deciding on a place to live or whether to have children—every decision precludes another. But what if you’d gone the other way? It can be a seductive thought, even a haunting one. Andrew H. Miller illuminates this theme of modern culture: the allure of the alternate self. From Robert Frost to Sharon Olds, Virginia Woolf to Ian McEwan, Jane Hirshfield to Carl Dennis, storytellers of every stripe write of the lives we didn’t have. What forces encourage us to think this way about ourselves, and to identify with fictional and poetic voices speaking from the shadows of what might have been? Not only poets and novelists, but psychologists and philosophers have much to say on this question. Miller finds wisdom in all these sources, revealing the beauty, the power, and the struggle of our unled lives. In an elegant and provocative rumination, he lingers with other selves, listening to what they say. Peering down the path not taken can be frightening, but it has its rewards. On Not Being Someone Else offers the balm that when we confront our imaginary selves, we discover who we are.

Book If Life Is a Game These Are the Rules

Download or read book If Life Is a Game These Are the Rules written by Cherie Carter-Scott and published by Harmony. This book was released on 1999-10-19 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn the rules of life to conquer any challenge, manage unpredictable ups and downs, and become a satisfied and well-adjusted person. We all know the feeling: In the game of life, why am I the only one who doesn't know how to play? But now, help is at hand, because this wonderful little book will teach you the rules so that you can conquer life's challenges and manage its unpredictable ups and downs. For one of her workshops several years ago, Chérie Carter-Scott, a corporate trainer and consultant, composed a list of basic truths about life, which she named "The Ten Rules for Being Human." Right away, the Rules resonated with her clients, who photocopied and passed the list to friends and relatives. Within months, Chérie's Rules were in thousands of homes all over the country, and eventually, they were published in Chicken Soup for the Soul and have also appeared in Ann Landers' column. Although there's no formula to help you win the game of life, Chérie's Rules convey a universal wisdom that, once understood and embraced, can contribute to meaningful relationships with ourselves and others, at work and in the home. In If Life Is a Game, These Are the Rules, Chérie shares that there are no mistakes in life, only lessons that are repeated. In thoughtful, inspirational essays illustrated with encouraging personal anecdotes, she includes the lessons that can be learned from each of the Rules and offers insights on self-esteem, respect, acceptance, forgiveness, ethics, compassion, humility, gratitude, and courage. Best of all, Chérie shows that wisdom lies inside each one of us and that by putting the Ten Rules for Being Human into action we can create a more fulfilling life.

Download or read book If There is Life I Want to Live written by Metropolitan of Mesogaia and Lavreotiki Nikolaos and published by MICHAEL THE CHONIATIS. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I began to write it all down when I was on Mount Athos, during a period of complete solitude, while staying at the kathisma or monastic dwelling of St John the Theologian, near the small harbour of Simonopetra Monastery. I completed it later when I was staying on the island of the same St John, on Patmos, in Kouvari. Both, places of quietude and spiritual seclusion. Places of prayer. In all I only needed a few days. My sole companion was the noble disciple of love, St John. The one who truly loved and was indeed loved by Christ. The text would only be the fruit of love and quietude; it is a fruit of the desert. I would say the fruit of prayer, but I fear that this might be considered an exaggeration. The questions – I chose one hundred to make a round number – and the dialogues are all authentic. The people are also real, although of course the names have been changed. On the other hand I have not recorded the whole discussion, but I have selected certain questions. All this is not so important. What really matters is for human nature and the person of the true God to be revealed clearly and truly through the whole discussion. Nothing else in this life matters more.

Book If Life Is a Grocery Store I Need Better Coupons

Download or read book If Life Is a Grocery Store I Need Better Coupons written by Keith Johnson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-02-21 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I believe that every man has the potential to pull himself from the mud of which he was created up to the highest point of stardom, to overcome the greatest of indignities, whatever may be served to him, and demonstrate the greatest of inspirational abilities, making mankind far better for his appearance on this earth, if he chooses, as brief as it may be. I believe that every man is sacred, and when he realizes his individual worth, he cannot help but strive for perfection, and though he cannot find it in his own strength, will realize that the God who made him loves him and will give him the strength he needs to overcome all tribulation and failure, that we were made to be happy and excited about our existence, and that we should live and learn to love life and embrace all it has to offer passionately, eliminating the bad and enhancing the good, for ourselves and our fellow man. It is our God-given responsibility to take this gift of life and the earth upon which we were given to live to learn to love God and our fellow man, and that our journey is solely our own, and affects all of us for the worse or the better according to the choices we make guided by our character. And whether we like it or not, all of our chosen activities affect each other, and should lift up our fellow man as sacred and special as we lift ourselves up individually, and to never forget that we are not here alone, that God is watching every step we take and every action in our lives, and we are held in judgment for how we treat ourselves, our fellow man, and our relationship with our Heavenly Father.”

Book Psychotherapy As If Life Really Mattered

Download or read book Psychotherapy As If Life Really Mattered written by Christopher Alan Anderson and published by First Edition Design Pub.. This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A psychology for the "New Age" from which we may finally discover through each (opposite) other "Who am I?" and "Why am I here?," bringing closure to our incompleteness. "There is only one choice in life--each other. In the one-force paradigm, this is the exact choice we have not been able to make. No wonder why we long ago went crazy. We are blocked from our procreative life together in spirit, mind, and body. But with the understanding of the two forces of creation in making the conscious metaphysical distinction between male and female, we can now rectify this problem. We can accept our other half into our hearts and lives by simply saying, 'I choose you.' Such is the existential choice that will bring life to our lives. " Psychotherapy As If Life Really Mattered Author Bio: Christopher Alan Anderson (1950 - ) received the basis of his education from the University of Science and Philosophy, Swannanoa, Waynesboro, Virginia. He resides in the transcendental/romantic tradition, that vein of spiritual creativity of the philosopher and poet. His quest has been to define and express an eternal romantic reality from which a man and a woman could together stand in their difference and create a living universe of procreative love. Mr. Anderson began these writings in 1971. The first writings were published in 1985. On a personal note, when Mr. Anderson was asked to describe the writings and what he felt their message was he responded, "Spiritual procreation. Mankind has yet to distinguish the two sexes on the spiritual level. In this failure lies the root of our problems and why we cannot yet touch the eternal together. The message of man and woman balance brings each of us together in love with our eternal other half right now." keywords: Psychology, Completeness, Sexuality, Spirituality, Identity, Consciousness

Download or read book To Explain the World written by Steven Weinberg and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterful commentary on the history of science from the Greeks to modern times, by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Steven Weinberg—a thought-provoking and important book by one of the most distinguished scientists and intellectuals of our time. In this rich, irreverent, and compelling history, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Steven Weinberg takes us across centuries from ancient Miletus to medieval Baghdad and Oxford, from Plato’s Academy and the Museum of Alexandria to the cathedral school of Chartres and the Royal Society of London. He shows that the scientists of ancient and medieval times not only did not understand what we understand about the world—they did not understand what there is to understand, or how to understand it. Yet over the centuries, through the struggle to solve such mysteries as the curious backward movement of the planets and the rise and fall of the tides, the modern discipline of science eventually emerged. Along the way, Weinberg examines historic clashes and collaborations between science and the competing spheres of religion, technology, poetry, mathematics, and philosophy. An illuminating exploration of the way we consider and analyze the world around us, To Explain the World is a sweeping, ambitious account of how difficult it was to discover the goals and methods of modern science, and the impact of this discovery on human knowledge and development.
