Ford, dit Bennie, aurait également souhaité ne pas rendre de comptes sur le voyage qu'il entreprend, de New York à Los Angeles, mais le vol en correspondance étant retardé depuis des heures, il est bloqué à l'aéroport de Chicago, bouillant de colère et de frustration : cette fois, si sa dernière chance de ne pas complètement rater sa vie est en train de lui filer sous le nez, c'est uniquement la faute d'American Airlines, et par conséquent, il va le leur faire savoir ! Le retard de cet avion n'est pas un contretemps : c'est un drame, une tragédie aux conséquences irrattrapables. Car assister à la cérémonie de mariage de sa fille, Stella, était le seul espoir de Bennie d'établir enfin un semblant de relation avec elle, de se faire pardonner son absence, d'assumer son rôle de père avec une bonne vingtaine années de retard, de devenir enfin un homme, de prendre un nouveau départ... Or, précisément, ce départ est déprogrammé par la scandaleuse incompétence d'une compagnie aérienne ! Ce qui commence comme une lettre de réclamation pour obtenir le remboursement d'un billet à 392,68$ prend peu à peu la forme d'une confession emportée, furieuse et drôlissime, où tous les échecs d'une vie dansent une bacchanale frénétique pour être revisités dans une ultime tentative de libération. Jouant cartes sur table, Jonathan Miles n'a pas choisi d'écrire un roman sous forme de lettre, mais une lettre sous forme de roman : il est hanté par la question de la temporalité, de l'utilité du courrier, du mystérieux accueil que lui réservera son destinataire. Son style chaloupé, coupé dans son premier élan, et reprenant résolument sa verve dans de longues phrases aux incises rythmiques, passe du registre littéraire soutenu au dialogue le plus aérien. La mise en abîme de l'écriture épistolaire dans le travail de traduction de Bennie surprendra le lecteur par son habileté et son originalité. Miles nous prouve, dès ce premier roman, qu'il écarte d'emblée toute facilité : courrier administratif détourné, Dear American Airlines montre comment l'écriture romanesque la plus créative a tout à gagner d'une forme épistolaire ici exploitée avec une imagination, une verve et une énergie exceptionnelles.
